Why are you picking 700cc wheels for a touring bike anyway? 😛

(I have a Surly Long Haul Trucker for sale !)

I was talking to someone who has one of the earlier ones, and they’re apparently quite flexible… I’d love a go on one 🙂

They don’t line up the logos on the hub with the valve hole…FAIL!

@anagallis_arvensis You’re proving that theory that you’re statistically at most risk of crashing shortly after passing your test. It’s not supposed to happen that quickly though.

Tried winding my pikes down to 130 at the weekend – it’s doable, but not great… And mine’s the older model. Save up for 160mm forks – maybe Lyriks 🙂

I think it should be taken into consideration that on-one bikes have very long top tubes, and I don’t really think they’re suited to women.

I’m 5’4″ (on a good day), and have rode a 16″ Kona, a 15.5″ Dialled Prince Albert, a 15.5″ Dialled Love/Hate (which was probably a tad too long), and a small Santa Cruz Heckler.
The Santa Cruz Heckler is my favourite – as I like a really short bike for steep stuff, but a friend the same height as me preferred the Love/Hate (my least favourite). <– This makes me think you should just make this person try a few types of bikes before building.

I would have also thought so, but this post suggests otherwise…

Standover is a mostly mental concept I think 😛
If you’re on the bike it’s unimportant

BTW – That looks like a HUGE lock, you shouldn’t need the wider version – it usually is possible to get a good tight fit on those locks around the rear wheel, seattube and the bike rack – you have to park it so that the seattube is slightly behind the bike rack, then get all three at a diagonal angle to the bike and rack. It makes it really difficult to use the bike as a lever to get the lock off. And if you put another tight lock or two, it makes it near impossible.

I manage to get my evo mini around the wheel seattube and bike rack (only works with racks that size, or smaller! and this is on an old racer – not too tight clearance wise)

@toys19 It constantly amazes me that you don't even need a chain for lift assisted riding.

I think everyone's missing the obvious reason to go for middle – the granny alone will look CACK. the arms will stick out with nothing on them. Everyone knows we only do this for the aesthetics. Go for middle, for goodness sake's.

Don't have the mech parallel with chainrings- have it parallel with the chain (in a middling setting)
If you swing that mech back towards the back wheel almost, you'll get into the granny ring

I'm not sure about full-time, but it's great for part time work.

Personally, I'd prefer to do it in a van. I hate working on bikes not in a workstand anyway…

For liability insurance you might want to get a cytech qualification (but it's not always necessary)

Lots of couriers do ride fixies without brakes. I remember hearing that a friend clipped a pushchair because they were unable to stop in time (and then they still didn't get a brake, ffs)

    holyhutzpa

Used to know couriers in London who'd do this. Idiots…

    Mailed ya HC 🙂
And, I'm pretty sure I rode my fixie around the block before I put a break on it. Fupping terrifying though. Especially when the crank fell off (not my fault – I wasn't the mechanic that time)
Crank falling off and no breaks == not fun
    (luckily I was going sloooowly)

@Hairychested, I thought you promised me you were going to put at least one brake on it!
Fixed gear cycling is fun. I occasionally miss mine.

I'd do exactly what you've just said. 🙂
You can't beat CRC for international hassle free delivery, and to do it VAT-free.
Make sure they like the look of the Cube first though – I find that the success rate for kids cycling is directly proportional to how much they like the bike (this may apply to adults too)

@Willard, I'm in the process of a warranty claim on DMR V8s. I think there's a particularly shit batch of them doing the rounds (in a creaky fashion)

Sounds stupid – but the middle ring is actually on the inside of the spider, and not the outside(where the outer should be)?

    holyhutzpa

Loose chainring? Is it in all gears?
I will say that I bought some DMR V8s recently, and they were particularly shite. Cups and cones were rusted from new I think… Not enough grease… They could be the cause too…

I rode with a Breo (not the above) every day for 4 months or so until it snapped. I like it, I like that it's light and moves, so doesn't strangle my wrist. It also doesn't leave tan lines, if you care about such things 😀

The hoses are a different size to camelbak ones – those bite valves don't fit unfortunately (and that is the worst part of an otherwise great pak)

I saw a nice cannondale being ridden around london with those 50p pedals (that's how much they cost to a bike shop – can't imagine what they're made for). So wrong.

Sidi's last for me too. Tried to kill them couriering in London, but I think it killed me first 😀
