Have you tried rolling back to an earlier restore point? If Office was working before the update, you should be able to get it back by restoring the system to the pre-update state.

    Unlikely.

But possible, and quick and easy to check and fix before you start attacking it with screwdrivers.

I went down the route of trying to incrementally update an old Win7 machine, ended up binning everything and building a new machine in the end. If the motherboard and CPU are reasonable, 8 GB RAM and Win10 should be an improvement.

It’s possible that the cat is just a coincidence and it’s a driver problem. Try going to the Device Manage and see if the keyboard and trackpad are listed there or have warning marks next to them (or if there are any other warnings). If they are listed, try uninstalling them, including the drivers, then rebooting. Windows should detect them on the reboot and install new drivers. If there are any other hardware devices with warnings, try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling.

If both machines run 2.5″ HDD’s then you could just swap the old drive into the new machine.

This might cause problems with Windows activation, depending on whether the two machines are running exactly the same version of Windows or not. Also, some programs are activated for a specific hardware configuration (i.e. registered to a specific machine). If that’s the case, then it’ll probably be much easier to just deactivate it on the old machine and reinstall.

The new Windows Store apps should automatically install on the new machine. I haven’t done it for a long time, but from what I remember, you go to the Windows Store and click on a “Show Apps I Own” button, or something like that.

Regular Windows programs that are installed from a CD or downloaded installer will not transfer like that. You need to install them manually. Some of them may need to be deactivated from the old machine before you can activate them on the new one. As long as you have the installation media and serial numbers, it’s just a matter of sitting down for a couple of hours and setting it all up.

Realized he was spotted on CCTV and took it back hoping you wouldn’t realize anything had happened? Genuinely thought it was his own bike that had been stolen but realized that it wasn’t and took it back? His mom asked him where he’d got it and gave him a spanking and told him to take it back?

I don’t know how you decide who deserves to win the F1 title

I did some research on this. It turns out that the title is awarded to the driver with the most points. That was Rosberg, so he deserves to be champion.

When people say things like that, I take it literally and behave accordingly. What it means is that you have your job through talent and hard work, not luck. This means you can do as you please without any risk of being sacked. Just to prove that I was hired due to my talent, I generally change jobs as soon to demonstrate that I am in demand.

Another interpretation is that you’re actually unlucky to work there because the job sucks. In this case you are probably best to change jobs.

On the scale of things that annoy me, this hardly rates and I get irritated easily. Basically, people are stupid and blunder around getting in my way constantly, it wastes hours of my time. If I’m in a bad mood, I shout at them and wave my fist in the air. It doesn’t stop people being stupid, but it makes me feel better knowing that I’ve made someone else unhappy.

I think the spectator was up on the bank and the car bounced up high enough to hit him. Whether it was the car or the fall that killed him will be the big legal question.

That’s sad news. Just watched the video, pretty routine crash by WRC standards, spectator just in an unlucky spot.

    About 8:25 in video.

Reassuring to hear that they do actually exist. I went through the parts manual on the SRAM website as per mikewsmith’s suggestion and they do list a 1-1/8 steerer. That still left the question of whether they actually sold a 150mm travel version with 9mm QR and straight steerer. Wouldn’t be a big deal to rebuild a wheel with a new hub, but a tapered steerer would be a problem. Seeing a photo is reassuring.

Thanks. I assumed they stopped making straight steerers years ago on the longer travel forks.

Think about it as a business decision. What are the chances of actually getting your money back? How much time, stress, and money will it cost you to pursue it? It’s pretty natural to be angry and want justice, but is it actually worth it when you add up the numbers?

I would be gutted to get a podium knowing it was only because somebody better wasn’t there.

I think I could probably get over it.

I did that once. It took a big patch of skin off, hurt for several days. Took ages to heal over. My least favorite injury by a long way.

That laptop is pretty low-spec, I’d steer clear for business use. It has an old Atom cpu and only 2GB RAM, plus a very small, slow EMMC disk. I would suggest that you look for something from one of the major brands (Lenovo, HP, Dell, etc) that has a Pentium or i3 cpu, at least 4GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD or bigger.

Something like this would be much more useful.

If you’re going to be using it for business and are worried about security, Win10 Pro (not Home) might be worth the upgrade for the disk encryption. If you keep Windows 10 updated (just leave it turned on by default and it’ll update itself), disable flash, use a non-administrator account, and stay away from dodgy websites, it’s just as secure as MacOS. The Safari browser on Macs is not as secure as Mac fanboys imagine, so believing that you’re safe just because you use a Mac is a major mistake.

Sometimes I am amazed that the British were so successful at blazing the trails across Canada.

I suspect that the successful ones got a bit of help from the locals. Others died horrible deaths.

That one only has a 128GB SSD for storage, most of which will be taken up by the OS

My laptop has 1.5 GB virtual memory, a 3.2 GB hibernation file, and a 6.5 GB system restore file. The Windows installation is 15.7 GB. That adds up to less than 30GB, which is nowhere near “most” of 128GB. Office is not part of Windows, it’s a separate suite of programs that must be installed separately, just like other programs. Windows and Office will run fine on a 32 GB hard disk, although there will be very little room for documents, so if you have a large media library, you will soon fill up a 128 GB disk.

To do it properly I’d have to go to the shop and buy more instant coffee then make 2cups of coffee, one with a drop of cold water and one without and then compare the two!

To do it properly, you’d need at least four administrations, to cover the four different possible orderings of the samples. It might also be useful to include some regular “burnt arseholes” tasting coffee as a control, so eight administrations or more. You’d need at least 30 raters, preferably 100 or more with careful attention to demographic sampling. Best to budget for 1000 administrations, plus some biscuits to reward the raters for their time and effort.

Forgetting to tighten stem clamp bolts (I was interrupted by phone as my excuse).

Fitting 8 speed cassette instead of 9 speed and then spending several days trying to get the gears to index properly.

but they all have a base, where the 200+ staff work to design, manufacture the chassis, work on strategy etc

Defining “based” as being where the cars are assembled and where the mechanics live is simple enough, but the most important work is done in the wind tunnel, which might be in a different country to where the carbon fiber parts are constructed and bolted together, with the powertrain built elsewhere. Defining where the “design” is done is not so easy. During the John Barnard period, Ferrari’s technical department was split between the UK and Italy.
