Does this actually have anything to do with tubeless?

The tyre had been punctured and had spat out a bit of sealant. I topped up the sealant and went for a ride. I think what happened was that the sealant blocked the exit hole, but the air got between the tread and the tyre carcass. This caused the tread to separate. Wouldn’t have happened with a tube. It finally went off with a nice bang as I was taking a nap and woke me up.

Mineral oil based fluids can destroy seals in DOT 4/DOT 5.1 systems. In an emergency, you can use fresh water to replace DOT fluids. It will work fine and won’t harm the system, but will boil easily so it’s only suitable as an emergency to get you home. After that, you need to completely flush the system to get all the water out.

If you’ve filled a DOT system with mineral oil, you should strip it completely and wash everything in hot soapy water, then rinse in hot water and allow to dry before reassembling. If you’re lucky, it might be fine. If you’re unlucky, you may need to replace all the seals.

When my daughter was two, she got a magic marker and drew faces on lots of expensive stuff. I briefly considered throwing her a beating but then realized that all my friends are pinko-liberals who would probably take her side so I just decided to chalk it up as one of those amusing things that kids do.

What if the teams were unleashed, no budget caps and no restrictions on available technologies etc?

If you could persuade Honda that it’s worth the cost, four of the current 10 teams might survive. More likely you’d end up with just Merc and Ferrari. With only four cars competing, it would really suck to be the driver who didn’t get on the podium.

To paraphrase something I read somewhere, the fundamental problem is that there is a qualifying session to find the fastest car, then the cars with the fastest at the front and the slowest at the back. In order to pass a car, you have to go faster than them, so there is an obvious problem with letting the fast cars start at the front. The obvious way to fix this would be to award half the points for qualifying, start the cars in reverse order, then award the other half of the points for finishing order. That will never happen, so the alternative is to set up a situation where relative car speed varies over the course of a race. The easiest way to do this is to have tyres that degrade quickly if abused, so that smooth drivers are rewarded and pit stop strategy can overcome the disadvantage of a slower car. That was tried and resulted in lots of changes in race leads, but everyone complained that the drivers couldn’t drive flat out. So now we’re back to a situation where the fastest car starts at the front and the relative pace of the cars doesn’t vary much during the race. If you wanted a format that guaranteed almost no overtaking, this is exactly what you’d do.

Edit. Oops, beaten to it by P-Jay.

From memory, old style crank bolts need 40 Nm or so. Cylinder head bolts for cars are generally double that, so a decent 1/2″ drive torque wrench handles that easily.

The fight for tenth place was pretty thrilling.

They have an extra 5kg of fuel, but the new cars will spend more time at full throttle so some races might need lifting and coasting.

Of course. Now I see why you earn the big bucks.

I’d worry about strain through landing gear from centripetal forces

If you bank the runway like a Nascar track, at a specific speed, the planes will follow the curve without any steering input. By varying the banking, you can allow for the acceleration/deceleration of takeoff and landing. Would ruin the crosswind thing though.

My guess is that Mclaren are extremely unhappy with Honda and hope to shock them into improving by publicly embarrassing them. Bit like Red Bull and Renault.

Has any inventor or developer or manufacturer ever tried using magnetic force as a replacement for a bikes drivetrain?

That’s essentially what electric motors do.

actually as wind resistance stays the same but weight ie force pushing it downhill is greater you do build up speed more quickly downhill – obviously the effect is only significant at speed

If you were racing down a ski slope, it might be measurable, but I don’t believe that the average rider would notice any difference in acceleration coasting downhill offroad. What would probably make a bigger difference coasting downhill is that an e-bike would let you run bigger tyres at lower pressure without suffering too much on the climbs.

the extra weight makes it roll quicker downhill

It might roll over obstacles better because it has more momentum, but it won’t actually accelerate downhill any faster.

do I just need a recovery disc/usb and go from there?

Yes. You should be able to create a Win8 recovery disc on another PC and use that to reinstall. As long as you have downloaded the correct version of Windows (i.e. Home, Professional, etc), it should detect your hardware and automatically activate without needing a serial number.

I assume sheep, cows, deer, even dogs don’t have the brain power to work out what barbed wire is

Cattle and dogs are much smarter than you give them credit for. Cattle quickly learn to spot when an electric fence is turned off and will walk right through it. When it’s turned on, they will stay clear. They understand barbed wire perfectly.

    Not enough to notice.

I often mix a half-worn pad with a new one on each end of the bike until they wear down a bit. After a month or so, I switch both new pads to the front and the worn ones to the rear.

would McLaren be able to swap to 2016’s (relatively) reliable power unit?

That would require a major car redesign and would be pointless anyway. Their goal this year will be to have a competitive engine by the end of the year, there was never any realistic hope that they would have caught Merc at the beginning of the year. Last year’s engine was a long way behind on power and they needed to start with a clean sheet design to fix the major problems. It’s impossible to say how major their testing problems are, reports are of electrical issues, so it’s possible that the engine performed well on the dyno but the problems are fairly minor things related to the installation in the car. Even if the engine has a more fundamental problem, they are still best to learn as much as they can from the new engine then redesign it to fix the problems. They have much better technical resources to develop the aerodynamic package than other midfield teams so fourth in the constructors’ championship is possible if they can sort out the engine quickly. If they went back to the old engine, they would be conceding any hope of beating the midfield teams.
