One of these handlebar mounted airplanes for children with the spinning propellor.

Or just some fluorescent strings(as in the ladies garment) to be worn on top of the bib shorts, all day. Have seen some guys cruising like this all day through spain for a couple of beers.

As someone who passes a lot of time in France. Peage might be a bit cheper or expensive when leaving but no massive difference dpends on the spot. As per the bank card comments, its very rare now to only be able to fill up with a french card. There are quite some online retailers though who don’t accept foreign cards and paypall and cheque book is still king whilst in many other countries almost abolished.

Make your house number one. I am now the self appointed mayor and proud barer of house number one in a french Hamlet part of a French town also without numbers.

After receiving a post card we send you this post card to the above adress as to tell you the above adress to which we just sent a post card too. Which obviously by mail promptly arrivess.

The vendor used some small dodgy outlet(UPS) which obviously explains it.

tarty bikes made me a nice set of fatbike wheels on weird sized hubs almost two years ago. Had to ride the front wheel without a tire at 40+ to break it. You can supply own parts as I did with the hubs.

Indeed robben island is often fully booked in advance especially that time of year. Same for table mountain.

Didn’t find Robben island really worth the time when I was there ten years ago.

Table mountain never been up there though I have been to Cape Time at least 20 times. Preview alternative plans as they might not run with wind or views may be useless if clouds. Do take the cable car as the hike is long and there are/where safety issues on the hiking trail.

You made the wrong choice the lovely riding is mostly on the outskirts of Cape Town.

The riding close to Cape Town is Tokai Forest reasonably safe during daytime.

Lovely mtb stuff in under an hours drive Jonkershoek, contermanskloof, hillcrest Welvanpas, oak Valley, Lebanon forest, Thandi and Paul Cluver, Delvera Meerendal

Scenic drive/road ride) around the peninsula on the cape argus cycle tour route. Especially chapmans peak renowned for beautiful views.

Around Knysna as said Harkerville(there is some promising walking paths around as well though would avoid as you are in peak holiday time stay to trail). There is also http://www.gardenroutetrailpark.com/ nice riding avoid after big rain(their berms don’t drain properly yet.

Lovely scenery around Knysna though. There is a bungy jump not too far away if int this. Good seafood a plenty in Knysna as well.

Good food a plenty especially as you are a meat person, lovely fruit salads with breakfest often as well.. If into a quick burger ignore Mac Donals or Wimpy’s have a Steers its on another level.

Just got back after a two month trip there. Watch for the heat that time of the year as it can be quite hot, sadly peak holiday season so some places are gonna be crammed. And watch you speed, the wider Knysna reagion is full of fixed and mobile speed traps.

The french are a lot worse at tailgating then the French.

For those wondering yes foreign plates get escorted to cash machine in Belgium as else you just won’t pay, a Belgian gets it in the mail and if not paid they deduct it from your tax refund. They have to pull of foreigners as else none of the fines are paid.

I don’t get how people to claim to do years with a singlespeed chain. I have recently gone Rohloff on my mountainbike and even of mostly try trails I find chain strech quite bad. Chain binned at just over 1000k second one not gonna last more then 1500 it seems.

Joberg 2C is a ride/race that Tom dick and Harry with a beerbelly and hangover can finish. the drakensberg region is stunning views wise but its not that hard. Its nice but aimed at the corpored market after Sani2C always filled up too quick.

If you want to have some hardcore (South) African cycling. Have a look for RASA(race across South Africa) aka freedom Challenge. And try to get close to the womans record from around 13 days another level of suffering that is. As some oddball seven summiter that I met and did it says boys ride the epic men do the freedom challenge. You even get a free Pizza at the finish.

You will have to put the seats flat. The boot of this car is absolutely tiny. 306 307 is a lot bigger they take two bikes with the seat up. The old 406 was the king humongous boot.

    I had a 307 406 407 and a 206(my sister) all in SW/ wagon version

for other readers you can not do automatic payment(prelevement automatique) of suppliers from a foreign account. This for cases where they make the demand and amounts vary. You might be able to do an automatic transfer for same amount where you are the sending party.

So going with the local account is the best you could do, not to sure if banque postale is the best choice. French banking is ridiculously expensive though. I have a french account btw and used to work for a french bank long ago.

I used http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/ in the pas and was really happy with them even could supply my own hubs with no hassle. Quite a specific build(hub shape form) and they just do it at the standard price. Back wheel still going strong front wheel only passed away whilst I decided to try ravine exploring without a front tire ;)

So planet X/on One what are you going to do for me?

My order of the 14th SO0658823? is still not beiing shipped.

My framed that cracked was replaced quickly by you but then shipped to an old address where you where told of the new one and picked up from the new one. I now have in prime riding time no proper mountainbike and a frame 1000km away. SO0225086 your customer relations did say sorry but that doesn’t cut it for me.

Curious about that thule rack it looks like its just a strap to lock on the stays?? in that case i seriously doubt that stays tight under a beating. I am looking for a rack but one that needs to take rough of road beatings with possible high speed op road riding to. For bikepack racing purposes.

You paid it with the item. They price per country if you change tour country price change an item costing 5EUR for uk will be a bit more for france another bit more for spain and quite a bit more for south africa and you.

Well they definitely used to I used to live at 4 addresses in 4 countries at two different continents and when deciding where to ship to saw items price change and go back to old if going to first destination.

Such a biased view from riding toll roads on a weekend.

I have spenc quite some time on french roads and driven in many countries.

French in the countryside are really nice to cyclist and often just wait behind till you signall to pass even when plenty of space and you are really slow.
These same monkies tough are horrible tailgaters on winding road with little or no overtaking opportunities and like to move back into your lane within 1m of the front of you vehicle even if its 3 times the size and 4 times the weight. They do have many road deads for a reason as well as good rally drivers. Drink and drive has gone down quite a bit because of policing as well as speeding my local friends are scared of loosing points.

About motorways don’t forget that many area’s are not densely populated tolls keep many a way especially the short local trippers so a lot less joining and leaving. And about your very few trucks, there are weekend bans or high trafic holiday bans for them. They are quite good at gunning it down on windy small D roads at any time of the day. Although new zealand west coast south island milk truck are still unbeatable in skills ;)

There is a general truck ban for sundays last saturday had a truck ban as well this may cloud your judgement.

Check the airport brussels south is not brussels but Charleroi. They do have some flights actually going to brussels zaventem now. Alternative is Manchester Antwerp and then train from antwerp to brussels should be as fast likely faster then brussels south and you wonth be flying ryanair if that’s not your cup of tea.

    Marge,

that will be higway miles compared to size and then it is most likely correct. You could see the highway lighting from space though now they do dim some early morning.

    Ambientcost,

Still one of the most taxed countries in the world especially for high earners, do check your after tax income. No welath tax though or most capital gains so good for the really rich.

As said diverse north really flat in many places, south some nice hills road and offroad and hillier than many parts of england all depends with what you compare. Weather regularly grey and wet but then if you come from uk thats often just the same.

I was born there but I moved away.

mine is 24 at 82 kg whilst I would say I am close to racing fit. At onl 3kg more i would be overweight whilst i would say that most people would still envy my riding then(I was 85 last year and climbed at 1000VAM)I could offcially mose ten kg and be healthy though in reality i would be close to death. And its not from gyming to much I haven’t been in a gm for at least 5 year.

I have studied as a coach. BMI is good as a first indication for the general population. Though it is not accurate for muscular people and not accurat for quite tall or quite small people.

No idea about the tires but been last week to Beaufort for the enduro event can onl say great natural riding beutifull views. And if you wanna train on something to get an edge make it tight hairpins, better make it front wheel turns for hairpins they had some really sharp ones. Only reason I left cos they gave pis ppor weatjer for after last weekend.

I went on the friday garmin says I did 125 km full loop+Torgon + some wandering around. My fatbike liked it had little back brake left after a short while. The friendly chaps from Morzine Mountainbike Mechanics sorted me out with a brake bleed thanks chaps from small wheels.

    Sunday looked horrific conditions.

On the Hope night ride all you could have is Hope a lot of hope that it was really just this once. Total disaster on the saturday Hope was to supply lights well when they where working they where quite weak and massively outperformed by my chinese 25 quid crap. And then the Hope chaps don’t really seem to be in to maintenace or recharging at least 10 sets out of maybe 40 failed in a ride that was maybe an hour most of this time beiing waiting for Hope guys to change batteries or another faulty set. Got nicely soaked waiting for them you could only feel pity for such a crap representation for what is meant to be a decent company. Felt ashamed that I recently almost bought one of their hubs and that I own one of their 40 teeth cogs.

Going back out tomorrow now stuff has dried a bit after sundays monsoons.

I was there on Landis day though although on Joux Plane.

in contrary to the higher mentionned 30 minutes before race roads do get closed earlier than that often especially on busy spectator points or hills. Joux Plane final climb so 4pm passage of riders was closed for cars before I showed up at 4 am after an all night drive. the closed for cyclists at 6 a.m. though those already on the mountain where free to cycle up and down for a long time after. On another just passing stage on a 5 dent in the road we decided to go for a swim in the lake about two hours before the race we wanted to get back to our mates. We where told to walk, which obviously we didn’t we got pulled over not much further on we tried again and where informed by some friendly spectators les flics where radioing ahead and close to beiing arrested after our 4th warnin(we where still 4k from where we needed to be). Luckily i spoke the language though its long walking the 4 k walk of shame on your socks(wel we did cut the hairpins through the fields maybe greeting the cows.

Gonna take the fatbike up this year so its either V rubbers or one one floaters if it gets wet. Need to find out if the lifts take fatbikes.

A lad round here won a hill climb (road),on his fatbike,a year or two back. REALLY wound up the roadies!. Get in!

I know a off a guy who broke an offroad hill climb record on a yearly event on a road bike fissed off some fat tire boys. He later converted to mountainbiker so they got some retribution.

From my experience green grass goes brown everywhere question is just when and how brown. Though it rains that much in the lakes that it might take a while.

What do you mean with lakes? in the real lakes property prices are quite high and job opportunities especially well paid not that many. Do you need to work as well or just the wife?

Travellling takes longer on the small road, shops will be further away and choice more limited. Can be limited a bit by choosing your location wisely. Over summer it gets a bit congested at times with tourist outside its fine.

As said it rains that why they have lakes. Other than that its nature views are wonderfull lovely road and offroad riding.

Used to live on the outskirts for a while but moved away almost three years ago.

have you tried green-acres.com or leboncoin ??

depends where your place is if its quite rural ie in a region with little work opportunities and not massively cheap then indeed yourmarket is foreigners. Big sell point then is a nearby airport see to which countries there are cheap flights and market to them.

I have one in rural France, my first residence is with mum and dad though LOLZ. most people around here seem to find 100.000 already a lot 150.000 an expensive place unless close to a big city.

Never been to Botswana but lived and worked in several other African countries. A good friends boyfriend works and lives in Gaborone, Botswana is one of the few good countries but still common sense is recommended.

South Africa though is a different package I have studied there, tourist visited and worked there been there at least twenty times in the last ten years.

Its a beautifull place but you need to take extra care especially if you are not so travel wise as ou seem to be.

First advice avoid going somewhere after dark and don’t drive unless taken by someone you can trust i.e. your local boss or so not somone you had a chat with earlier. Lots depends on where you are worst are Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban. Often the town center is the worst and a no go even in day. Inform yourself well from a reliable source. Don’t take valuables don’t take yous passport just a copy. Lock doors(car house) lock windows

Watch your stuff watch your luggage. Pack nothing of an value in your luggage rather overload your hand luggage. Lock your suitcase and take a hardcase one. Johannesburg internationl airport is one of the worst thieving pits in the world.

Don’t get we wrong I love South Africa in general and enjoy going there. Though some times it does go wrong and I would say I am relatively streetwise but might get a bit complacent.

If the place looks a bit off turn around good places and bad places can be really close to each other so an uninformed stroll around your hotel can be a bad idea.

I once woke up with a knife against my troath over there and escaped at least a dozen attacks while out cycling over there it doesn’t stop me it just makes me very vigilent and makes sure I check before I go somewhere. Also make sure info is recent a good place two years ago can be a shithole now.

Diseases not that many vaccins there are a lot worse places to be. South African cuisine is actually really good and not expensive. Though as said above Hiv and other sexual transmittable diseases are rife statistics are scary and most likely still quite below reality. In africa always wear a rain jacket even if it ain’t raining and even better abstain.
