I’ve just realised I’ve only extolled the virtues of this stuff. He are the downsides as I see them:
– Your hair is slightly greasy after you apply it as it uses glycerol to keep the active ingrediant where it should be. This is solved for me with a quick rub of a towel 10 mins after applying in the morning, or not bothering before bed.
– Embarrassment factor. I’m not bothered and have had a laugh about it with my mates. I can see how some people might not like having a bottle of “magic hair potion” on the shelf in their bathroom.
– Itchy scalp. It’s alcohol based, so the idea is you apply it, the alcohol evaporates leaving the minoxidil disolved in glycerol in place. This can have a drying effect causing itching. I had this very slightly, switched to a low alcohol version, problem disappeared.
– Everyone is different. Some people go bald, some don’t. Some respond to minoxidil, some don’t. It might work for you well, it might have very little effect. I’m unlucky in that I’m going bald, I’m lucky that it seems to work for me. That’s life.
– If you’re bald it’s probably too late. The main effect is to stop things getting worse, with some regrowth possible. Thinning hair will become thicker, etc. Cue balls will not magically stout sprouting! Start it early.
