I only ever wound my Rev down (on my 456) for places like Llandegla/Delamere etc where. Even then I only took it to 110mm or so. Since replaced the Rev with a Pike and it suits the bike really well.

My view is that you won’t get the best out of the frame with 100mm but it won’t be hideous. Do it and bung a Pike on it as soon as you can afford to.

p.s. having just advised you to put a Pike on, the Rev I used to use is sat under the stairs not doing much. I’m not actively trying to sell it but if you’re interested let me know. To save typing, see info on it here: http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/wtd-rockshox-revelation-426-air-u-turn

    Good-oh. Looking forward to it.

I wasn’t quite sure if he told me to turn right at the bottom of the Belmont descent or left then right in Belmont itself. But he was recommending some trails in some woods behind a lake/pond/reser*

(*it was definitely a body of water of some form)

I use the BrandX ones from CRC. I wear them most of the time now, simply ‘cos I don’t know I’ve got them on (’til I need them).

    Wide (and high) feet here.

Road: Spesh BG and Shimano R085 – the ratchet strap on the Shimano only just reaches but they’re very comfy.
MTB: almost always Spesh, don’t fit most Shimano MTB shoes but have found the MT90 boots fit really well.

I have tried on (but never ridden in) Sidi wide road shoes before. they felt like a great fit but the ones I was looking at were too expensive at the time. (What price comfy feet?)

I’m sure it is our particular brand of anarchy that is partially to blame.
i.e. we have no organisation fighting for our cause, with the partial exception of the CTC.

There is no cause to fight for.

I ride what I like when I like but the ‘what’ and ‘when’ make a huge difference. E.g. There are bridleways near me that I wouldn’t touch on a sunny bank holiday weekend (despite having every ‘right’ to do so) and paths that don’t exist on maps that I’ll happily use day or night year-round.

Even at my fittest (at the end of ‘serious’ marathon training, running 50+ miles a a week) I had a BMI of 26.4 = overweight. I am suited to rugby or some sort of wrestling, I suppose.

Unfortunately I actually enjoy running and cycling.

I looked into this a while ago and dithered between Sigma 17-70, 18-125 & 18-200. In the end I decided I’d have the quality of the 17-70 and get a separate long lens.

(but then I needed the money for something else and bought the ‘nifty 50’ (Canon 50mm f1.8) instead – great lens)

Maxxis ADvantage or Ardent. Similar tyres with the ADvantage edging it on off-road grip while the Ardent it a smidge faster.

    Flex in which direction?

It’s stating the obvious I know but going fast on a road bike feels different to going fast on a MTB. But you shouldn’t feel ‘out of control’.

I’ve had a few different road forks in recent history from a cheap Alu set on a Trek 1000 through to some very nice carbon ones. I’ve never really noticed ‘flex’ from any of them though the carbon ones definitely smooth out the road a bit so must be moving to some extent. In fact the cheapo ones were noticeably stiff.

Is it possible your QR was loose? Or wheel bearings/ headset?

If the small-minded want a chuckle, I’m off to haul my lardy self round the Spud Riley course this morning.

If I see you laughing though I might have to daddy splash you.

Same thing happens on TrackLogs. Pretty sure it’s down to the OS data, not the software.

I’ve got a route for Stanage Edge that runs parallel to the path on the ground. Following the GPS route precisely would have me over the edge for much of the way.

    (can’t get pic to work)

but it’s a ’94 Lavadome that’s been on here (or the old place) before in various different guises – sometimes rigid, sometimes SS – currently geared with an R7 fork.

    Cheers Ash.
That’s helpful even if it’s not the answer I want. I was getting close to just buying it to find out so you’ve saved me 40euro!

To be honest I’m not sure I will be able to map it electronically across three countries. Good job I can still remember how to use paper maps, compass etc.

My only other hope would be some sort of plug-in for Google Earth to draw a route on it. But I don’t think such a thing exists.

As for the Swiss and Italian bits… hmmph, you won’t get this from any IGN/Georando mapping.

Hmmmm…. if that’s the case Georando’s not what I’m looking for either.
I know the paper IGN maps go far enough over the border. I was hoping that if I bought the Georando IGN 3630 and 3531 maps, they’d have the same coverage as the paper maps.

In my experience non UST tyres on converted rims are near on impossible to get to seal

In my experience it’s a complete lottery. Some go on fine, some don’t. In the end it frustrated me to the point of chucking the whole f***ing lot (tyre, wheel and track pump) into the field behind our house and reverting to a tube (once I’d got it all back out of the field!). I’m pretty sure the tyre I was trying to put on was identical to the one I’d taken off (which had gone on fine, never leaked but was worn out). I don’t deal well with failing at something and knowing that my only option is to try the ame thing again and hope for a different result.

Having said all this… I am starting to think again about going (converted) tubeless again. I guess time has dulled the pain.

Definitely a day in L2A. And definitely Venosc.

It’s worth practising the Mega – maybe do the course twice and the qualifier twice – but riding other stuff in AdH and L2A is all good practice too. It’s all about getting tuned into that style and pace of riding. You just don’t get stuff like it in the UK. The riding in L2A will bring yuo up to pace just as well as riding the course itself.

Hora – You could build your own for £700???

Probably but I wouldn’t get it through B2W. Our scheme is pretty rigidly managed and it’s £700 max and complete bikes only.

That was my first thought but it’s now £799 I think.
