If it stays dry over night it won't be tooooo bad. A lot of it drys out fairly quickly. Yogurt pot's and some of the other favourites are in a poor state.

I've not seen the Singletrack route and am no expert, but I'm sure I could come up with a reasonably route if you get stuck. I'm free tomorrow (after the Grand Prix!) or Monday fi you need some company.

Crikey, have you been "Macaskilling" the subways on that!

It wasn't me you saw then!

A couple off weeks ago, when it had been raining for about 2 months, I was at the top of Holmbury Hill and there was a guy on a Scott and he didn't appear to have any mud on him or his bike. We couldn't work it out – even if he'd ridden it up the fire roads, he would of been mudder than that!

A bit off topic – I went to a talk a few years ago with Adrian Reynard and Nick Gouzie (sp?) (head of Reynard and Penske at the time) and they were taking about how different their cars were for Street/Road course/Oval and super speedway races. The thing that stuck in my mind was that when Indy Car is running at full chat on a super speedway, then the amount of fuel going into the engine is at the same rate as filling your kitchen sink with the cold tap going at full bore!

My one bit of advice is don't buy cheap cable cutters – the Shimano ones are expensive but alway cut clean.

I had a creak on my Mount Vision which took me ages to get to the bottom of. It turned out to be a cheapy rear QR – I only found it after looking at a thread about a guy with a noisy(er than usual) Orange 5 – Thanks STW!

I did the SDW in a day about 15 years ago when I was riding every day and "in my prime" it still wiped me out. I'm planning to do it in again in May, but over a couple of days.

I'm guessing GlenP's route must be getting on for 90 miles, yep that would be a very long day for me too! Sounds like a possible plan someday though.

I think any easy, but longish, non challanging bimble is, for me, the way to go to get some miles under my belt.

    Thanks for the advise chaps.

Just trying to get a long(for me)ride in and don't enjoy riding on the roads – though a ride to the seaside and back would be something to aim for. Might even treat my self to an ice cream when I get there.

If it stays dry I might risk the slicks. Now where's that bell…..

My LBS (Head For The Hills in Dorking) have just started doing them – they've got a sort of French blue coloured one – looks very, very nice – light too!

I'm slightly addicted to them – I'm on about 5 a week! Keep thinking I should try it toasted.

You can set them up for either down tube/chain stay or top tube/seat stay which ever suits the frame best. If you go the seat stay route make sure the lowest one isn't to low. My old Inbred has the lowest one to close to the drop out so is redundant.

Hi won one too – was very excited.

    Ahhhh, Wade Simmons.

It's soooo much better than the non-signed version!

    Many thanks Alb/Shimano/Singletrack.

There is a steep, longish roll-in near where I live which I once spent over an hour at the top getting very, very frustrated at my lack of guts to ride it. All my friends ride it without problem and I've ridden as steep before, but just couldn't do it. I'll do it soon. Honest.

Not bikes, but this might be interesting….

    Time: 22:35 to 23:05 (30 minutes long).
When: Monday 8th February on BBC 1

Olympic sprinting legend Michael Johnson moves from track to piste to discover what makes downhill skiers risk their lives in pursuit of sporting glory. Hurtling down a mountain at up to 80mph with minimal protection is something that most people would consider an act of madness, so Michael sets out to discover why these athletes so enjoy what they do, and how they deal with the risks involved and the crashes that inevitably happen.

My '09 ones had the blanking plates hidden under the window housings. Lovely.

I run a 9 spd with mine and it's fine. It means I can use the same spare bits as my other bikes.

I found the single speed chain would run very close to the chain guidey bits on the hub and sprocket and make an annoying rubbing noise at times.

Putting a Super Tacky High Roller on the front has given me so much more confidence in the turns – which has made me nearly able to keep up with my friends in the twisty bits!

Oh and an Alfine hub has got rid of the winter skipping gears/chainsuck misery, which would often make me grumpy.

DezB – yes all that stuff is on there – I love it when Chris phones Peter's dad at work to tell him what he's done to the bady!

They have/did have the full set of 24 shows including the Boxing Day special. There should be both series of On The Hour about aswell.

I still don't think there has been anything better on TV than The Day Today.

I must admit I downloaded them about 3 years ago and had to do it in an odd way – I am clueless when it comes to computers – I seam to think it was done through a mirror(??) or something. If you try Cook'd and Bomb'd I'm sure someone will be able to help. If have no luck at all let me know.

I've had mine about four months now and think it's great – I got fed up with skipping gears and chainsuck during the muddy months! I use it to convert my SS for winter use. I've had no problems so far. I iniatally ran 32/16 but have now changed it to 32/18 which is much better in the claggy conditions. A mate runs a Scandal 29er with 32/23 and is very pleased with it. I don't really notice the weight when riding it, but it does feel heavy when you pick it up.

I bought a similar set a couple of years ago – it was half price as well and I had been given vouchers. It's not had a huge amount of use as I've got rid of all my old cars but it does appear to be good quailty. I don't think you'd get much better for that price. Mine has 4 or 5 ratcheting spanners in it which are handy. The catches on the case are a bit bobbins though, but the case shown is different to mine.

I do feel slightly dirty using tools with Halford stamped on them though! 🙂

I mainly ride from home so up through Sheepleas and onto the Downs, White Down, Ranmore, Newlands, Ockham or over to Box Hill or Pitch/Holmbury/Leith Hills. We've found a few good loops but would be good to explore some more. You can always email me (as can anyone (within reason!)) if you fancy getting together for a ride. Am generally happy to go out in all weathers, day or night.

Hi, I live in Horsley, and sometimes go that way with a few friends – but that sounds a bit early for us and a bit to near home for a rest! It may be the Muddymoles – they have a website and do weekly rides IIRC.

Anyhow, if anyone fancies getting together for I ride I'd be up for it.
