White Ace cider, because I’m not 17 any more.
3 of us each with a child travel card and £2 each=3 lightweights with fizzy ethanol getting hammered in the private gardens by the Thames. I got slapped in the face by a handful of daffodils by a pi55ed mate: not impressed!
I remember the tube riders at 11.30pmish looking at us like scum when my mate threw up noodles. They seeped back and forth in the floor grooves as the tube accelerated and stopped. Rank.
HermanShakeFree MemberIt’s all relative, it appears that it would be more accurate to stay away from boats and tables. Only one of those is easy to do.
I reckon road it up while the major healing occurs then get back on the mtb when you can. If you only ever have minor scrapes from XC, then take it easy and keep it up. If you’re a DH sacrificial bone breaker then ease up on the hazards.
Triple or compact double?
HermanShakeFree MemberF*ck the nay sayers. I used to wear shin/knees and a pressure suit when I was into jumping; because I was crap at jumping  It meant I could do the necessary falling off to learn better technique.
I don’t get t-shirt, jeans and full face. Trendy, but a contradictory acknowledgement of risk.
I’m much rather over pad and have a good session, than be nervous/injured for a shred of acceptance from a stranger. I generally ride mellower trails without armour these days. I’m more concerned about my candys crippling my legs!
The sort of person to think better of you for riding bareback is probably not worth seeking approval from.
“The people who mind don’t matter, the people who matter don’t mind.” Dr Seuss.
HermanShakeFree MemberI think I’d give it a bash if it was going to be no more expensive than built (obviously saving £ is a pro). I agree with the therapeutic nature of tinkering; nothing is being demanded of you and it usually results in improvement to your setup. Double win!
Interesting point about 32h, I’ve heard lots about rotating weight and would love featherweight wheels…but don’t if I’d trust them. I reckon around 2kg the pair is a good target weight.
Ok, opinions on straight pull vs j spokes? Or is just reinventing…….
HermanShakeFree MemberGravity Dropper!
Simple, solid, ugly as a really ugly thing; but awesome. You can’t see the boot when you’re riding
I like that the mechanism has little to fail, I have a turbo with remote lever.
HermanShakeFree MemberThere’s f*ckloads!!
It kind of follows a horseshoe from the entrance, if you take the left across the football pitch and up next to the trees it’ll take you to the bottom of some singletrack. This connects to another section then the main path. Follow this for a bit and it’ll take you to some fun stuff interrupted by a fallen tree. Unclip, go over it and carry on. This takes you deeper and more trail emerges. This will lead you to the deepermost (?) sections. From there you are led through trails bringing you back through to the entrance of the park.
Alternatively, from the main entrance go down the central road about 200m then take the right hand path which follows a fence and bears left into some trees. This takes you through a copse (more fun on the way back out), leave the gate, cross the grass to the next copse, carry on straight and you’ll see singletrack emerging either left or right. I think the right takes you deeper, the left is the bottom of a fun trail which the right eventually leads you to (via a big concrete pond) It all deviates from the wider paths so just keep a look out.
There’s a lot more than I have described, but it’s not easy to! I love it, you can spend anything from 1 -4 hrs on the trails there depending on how much you want to explore. I usually give it 2 hrs to do a complete linked horseshoe of trails.
I should be riding next week if you want to hook up?
HermanShakeFree MemberI hear a little in the camelbak works quite well, and a pinch of electrolyte salts
HermanShakeFree MemberI’ve had bike rage moments of wanting to pick up the road bike and jamming the chainrings/chain into the neck of the inconsiderate motorist. I’ve only thought this when knocked/nearly knocked. It would probably go all Alan Partridgely uncomfortable. Oh, that and doing up the D-lock on someone’s neck
Andy beat me to it, I think “Ride boldly up to your assailant’s side, leap bravely from your machine full upon him.” is the best there
HermanShakeFree MemberOh, also I was thinking 36h f+r. Overkill? When the weight difference seems marginal I rhink I’d like the extra spokage.
I like the idea of unbuilding and rebuilding prior to tackling the job.
HermanShakeFree MemberI’ve seen a very similar setup to my requirements at £286 off ebay (new). What would you do? Forego the faff, or embrace the challenge?
HermanShakeFree MemberThe ages of the cyclist killed were alarming; 20, 20, 22, 30. Obviously I’m not suggesting that older people are more deserving of death! But these people had hardly lived.
Tragic, I wonder how many HGVs which injure or kill cyclists are transporting cars?
HermanShakeFree MemberCynic-al, if she doesn’t she certainly would have done post party. RRRRrip 8O
Now now lads, less of the hate. I wanna see the repair job on these badboys. Hell, strap a scantily clad girl onto the right leg while you’re at it (we wouldn’t want brake interference would we?).
HermanShakeFree MemberClassic scapegoating, project the blame onto an individual for the failings of a larger system. I love people, but then I really f*cking hate them sometimes!
HermanShakeFree MemberThanks for the warranty info j7, I can’t afford the spray at the mo so maybe I’ll wait til it expires? I thought the paint could have been a little more durable, anyone else find this?
The matt grey/gunsmoke on my Spesh P2 was amazingly tough. I guess we got lots of bike for the money so corners were cut in places. Makes me a little paranoid about damage though. Any Helitapers here?
HermanShakeFree MemberShould I get these?
You’ve got to love the detail and excellent photography
HermanShakeFree MemberI like the look/rep of Hope, but not the price. I’ve only ever had stock wheels, so spending that much on a set seems painful! But I get it, you gets what you pay for.
HermanShakeFree MemberSuperstar wheelsets with switch hubs are looking very appealing. 9mm chunky thru qr front and 12mm rear, the options I hypothetically built up came in at £205 (better spokes, AM rim). Or even the DH switch hub wheelset at £170… Weight vs beef :?:
The ability to adapt the hubs to any frame/fork plus the cartridge bearings make them very tempting.
It’s justifying it though, if I can curb spending then these could be on there soonish.
HermanShakeFree MemberIt makes sense to me, the stiffness and all but I struggle to imagine what it feels like in real life on the trail. Is it more responsive/accurate? I’ve only had QR or 10mm bolt through on a Spesh p2, but the fork (Marz Dj) flexed a little so not the best example.
Do you think the 9mm thru up front would do the same? A QR of 2 parts is obviously convenient, but a single piece seems more logical to me. I’m waiting to trash my wheels before the upgrade as they’re the stock ones so not bound to get much for them!
Is it just handling, or does power transfer also improve? Thinking about less energy wasted in axle flex… :| Being on the slim side I don’t want to overbuild the bike unless it’s going to improve the ride quality (which I’m already chuffed with!).
HermanShakeFree MemberI study outdoor adventurous education at degree level (facilitation, instruction, therapy etc) and I support severely learning disabled young adults.
Aiming to go into adventure therapy. Bike equipment as a business expense? Yes please!
HermanShakeFree MemberI only have a 5.5
I can only imagine the 6 to be awesomer. I totally love it, ups, downs, in betweens; all a joy. Oh, get a gravity dropper in there for the complete all mountain experience. Just don’t look at the rubber boot thingy
HermanShakeFree MemberLike the bike, not the colour. Much like the opinion dividing spread, it’s a bt marmitey for me.
HermanShakeFree MemberSome of my mates have them, they look overpriced to me…
Deuter make amazing bags, and I love my Berghaus Mach 7+4 clicky. The Berg is a compact, lightweight waterproof rucksack that expands from 7-11 litres with a zip. It has 2 bladder sleeves, a mesh helmet holder which can also take a large jacket, bag of spuds, parcels….I use it all the time, not just for riding. It’s just the right size for mtb. That big waist strap in the pic is removable, another skinny one is included which works great.
Mines dying so I’m thinking about getting an identical replacement, I think that highly of it!
They do an 18l too.
HermanShakeFree MemberI’m 64kg, before the “you’re saying that because you’re massive” retort appears!
HermanShakeFree MemberJust like that Simpsons where Homer has to qualify for his disability allowance by eating foods that make the walls transparent.
This was being discussed on the news as expensive in the short, but cheaper in the longterm for the NHS. I imagine someone who’s stomach has been augmented without the psychological development past why they did this to themselves will be prone to self injurious behaviour in some other. Maybe they just become alcoholics, or ironically anorexic?
Obesity is more complex than simply greed. People seem to have a very different approach to anorexia/bulimia which are different symptoms of the same root issue.
Alcoholism has a huuuge drain on the NHS, but this doesn’t sell papers. Pointing at fat people does, however. I agree with your  , but I feel there are many (cuddly) shades of grey.
HermanShakeFree Member125psi (max), 64kg, Conti GP4000. I float out of the saddle quite a lot as Brighton roads are horrendous. I really feel when the pressure has dropped in the tyres, they lose their ‘zip’. I have some Bar Phat under my tape which I think makes this comfortable to do. It’s quite comfy having chubby bars!
HermanShakeFree MemberSalamon make good, very breathable shoes. Take your time with sizing as they come up tighter than the size. Usually in the sale somewhere too!
These are great.
HermanShakeFree MemberI’ve seen both a typical vented helmet back to front and some one with a pi55pot reversed. A bike locked to a lamppost on my old road had an open rear V and a wrong fork. Every day I thought “maybe I should just fix it” I even considered leaving a note to offer to sort it out. Then I realised that they they probably didn’t give a sh*t.
It scored deep into my soul every time I saw it and it’s probably still there :|
HermanShakeFree MemberDon’t you grow a beard again and commission a super niche 29er? Then you can blame unfitness on the irregular nature of your bike…JK!
I’m totally doing whatever the equivalent of 29er super niche is when I get old. Knowing my luck it’ll be zero facial hair and wrought iron off road micro scooters as a revival *shudders*
HermanShakeFree MemberWould have been easier if you wanted 6 or more…

Wouldn’t IKEA have something? Sorry for shouting, it looks wrong lower case.
Try ebay too I reckon.
HermanShakeFree MemberI feel that shades are treated like the emperor’s clothes, the markup on them is ridiculous. I’d get some basic Endura specs and then either update my tyres for the season or shave some weight with components.
Prozzys. (not really, the markup on them is ridiculous).
HermanShakeFree MemberInvisible man? Maybe he needs full coverage to show his body. Ever seen a gap between his shorts/shoes or sleeves/bars?
I bet he owns a dog and hangs turds in trees.
HermanShakeFree MemberI’m training to be a Mountain Leader (taking groups mountaineering) and the policy on wild pooing is 50m away from water ways, buried in a 6″ hole with a rock on top to prevent it being dug up. Surely this should apply to anyone else adding faeces to an area it doesn’t come from (livestock-fine as they live there, dogs and people-bad as it’s external to the ecosystem.
Maybe little spades need to be marketed to dog owners in trendy colourways?
BTW I always remind myself that The Sun is the nation’s favourite. It seems to quell the anger! Morons will behave moronically.
You can’t polish a turd, but you can get rid of it responsibly
HermanShakeFree MemberThis reaffirms my frustration at dog owners. Love is blind, they are frequently inconsiderate! The shitinabag suspended from a tree branch (saw one last ride too!) is a classic, I’d hate to see what they put up for xmas! Imagine, all those “baubles”.
Granted, there are some considerate dog owners who go unnoticed as they are responsible. Alas it’s dwarfed by the tree terrorising pavement perverters with their rude little pets.

On-One 456 with a Fox fork for £500 posted, someone’s already asking about size but you might be lucky…
