Talkemada if you're going to acuse people of being racist try not to sound culturally-ignorant at the same time. The irony is just too much…

    The word is bwana.

I wrote a nice long reply and then lost it… oh well…

There are only 5 ticket types and not 200 – the complication comes from the "Rovers and Rangers" which are specific to certain areas (but good value)…

With regards the higher cost since privitisation – you're comparing apples and oranges… under BR there was massive under-investment in both infrastructure and rolling stock…

Safety is also now orders of magnitude better then it was then…

By way of geeky example – people used to be killed regularly by stumbling as they walked down a moving train and accidentally falling on the door handle, opening the door and ending up on the tracks – all because the doors didn't have locking mechanisms to stop it… Barmy…

Now I've mounted a defence I'll agree with you… Train tickets are disgustingly expensive…

No matter what you get you should be fine… Even the worst ones don't usually make themselves a nuisance until later… I think one of my Hep jabs was pretty awful for a few days (felt like I'd had my arm thrashed by an East German female shotputter) but not until about 12 hours later…

I've just gone through this with mine… Wanted a charge slice bar on it to stretch out on which meant I needed to be running CX levers and then got Mini-Vs to suit…

Tektro Mini-Vs on the front work absolutely fine – but on the back it is a little spongy with a combination of a bit of flex in the seat stays and I think a bit of compression of the cable outer – still stops the bike fine mind you…

I'm in the proper-cooking-when-camping camp too… Roast Beef is particularly good…It helps to have a Cobb[/url] – also great for cooking Calzone… Om nom nom…

I'd also recommend a copy of the Cool Camping Cookbook which has some great recipes in it…

I think airlines should offer flights where only adults are allowed. I'd pay the extra.

They do, it is called business class.

You say that – but I flew business to Dubai overnight for an early morning meeting – didn't sleep a wink because of the little treasure screaming away next to me… The meeting was *interesting*

I've got no problem with kids on planes – but kids in business should be banned

Every so often we lose some of our channels (normally C4 and E4) after a few hours a retune brings them back… All hope may not be lost – as unhelpful as it sounds – just leave it a while and try to retune again…

We've had some tea and biscuits…

Surly ones have a pretty wide base when compared to the cheapo pressed ones… but it is still only about 5mm – Andel do one as well – available from VeloSolo and Charliethebikemonger

I think a nice shiney white saddle and seat clamp might be in order to finish it off…

I'm enjoying how often the "average" man on the street or "average" meat eater is being slapped around on this thread… It means I am above average and therefore superior because I'm capable of eating meat AND thinking at the same time…

    Go me…

I hope you meant ravaged and not ravished, although neither would be particularly pleasant for daddy dog…O_O

Could be worse… he could have been radished…

Thanks DD… I'm not even sure the floor is concrete under the carpet – we're buying the house and all I know is the floor is presently solid and according to the vendors is original (house is over 100 yo – so i doubt it is actually "original")

Would love real wooden floor but scared of esclatating costs… Think it is something that will have to wait a while but just doing some really rough budgetting for next 5 years… Sounds like "several grand" will be the figure to use…

    Hijack –

dd – In a victorian terrace with the original solid floor – what would you recommend? Screed on top of old and then use adhesive or would it be possible to dig up the old floor and then put in a suspended timber floor instead? Or is that getting into hugely huglely expensive?

Cheers everyone – and thanks for the offer Bear – I'm Cambridgeshire – so a bit far from SE…

However had a good chat with a gas safe guy last night who pointed out (much like some helpful peoiple here) that provided I check a few distances between flue and window and in the cupboard and some other stuff there shouldnt' be a problem – he confirmed what I suspected which was that the surveyor is a muppet who was making a fuiss over nowt – but given the hassle I was getting from MrsHelios to have a survey done in the first place he served his purpose…

Will be taking a look myself tomorrow, then if still worried will have someone look at it, and finally intend for it to be properly serviced when we move anyway…

    +1 for Thule,

I've now been using the same pair of bars for 7 years on 4 different cars courtesy of just getting a new set of feet to match each car at £25 a pop…

Haze, if it's making a noise, the bearing will fail soon. Rebuild them now.

Nah… I've got some 5 year old MXRs on my commute never been rebuilt (cos you can't) never been serviced, never been greased, making an awful racket scrape scrape grind grind… They've been like that for about a year now and are still working…

I readily accept that they will fall to bits at some point… but they haven't quite yet… so I don't buy into the mass generalisations everyone makes… Just because others failed doesn't mean mine will… same as just because mine are OK still doesn't mean others won't fall apart…

Are the new ones significantly better?

Thanks everyone… The only reason i was wondering about the score on Experian is my Fiance recently had a few problems changing banks which meant that direct debits didn't get collected and her credit card payment was late – i wanted to see if it made me a bad person…

    Won't bother…

Lightwave are pretty good – I've got a T2 Trek XT which has a massive great porch on it for the additional weight of a tin of beans and a mars bar… (which i think is worth it given there is space in there to fit 2 bikes)

but their smaller ones would seem to fit your needs – T1 or T2 or if you want super light and don't mind paying their Ultra range are even lighter…
