Excellent – gives me an idea of what it will look like built up! FYI Turner do the proper head-tube badges for retro-fit. Well worth it IMHO.

They’re Air U-Turns. TBH not noticed a huge difference – they needed servicing so got it done at the same time. At the margin, better control once the going gets interesting. On smooth trails no difference of note.

Just make sure to ask your LBS to get the spacers – don’t think they come as standard but wasn’t charged for them.

TLR – just bought a set of 09 Float 36’s, but they’ve gone on the DW Spot rather than the Ti456. I got mine supplied with 10 & 20mm spacers – they don’t do 15mm ones but would be pretty easy to cut one down as they are only bits of plastic. My aim is to reduce to 150mm which I reckon would be perfect on the Spot. I may give em a go on the 456 but to be honest, have just got my Pikes Pushed, and cut the steerer right down, so reckon they’re pretty much perfect for the 456.

The Floats are awesome forks BTW.

Turner 5-Spot done in Signal Yellow. Took quite a while to reface all the bearing surfaces, so would suggest leaving an old bb and headset in place (plus any bearing surfaces if a full suss), but with new decals is looking pretty damn good.

Live in Surrey and just had mine powdercoated by windridge. did a pretty good job – not as good as the original finish but still not bad.

They can do 2nd hand, but beware if it requires certain parts, they have to send to Mojo as Mojo won’t supply them with certain stuff. Both shocks I sent recently for service required new bodies so had to go to Mojo. Not a big issue but adds a bit of time to the process.

Pushing is worth it imho, and whilst they do ask for riding style, it’s more along the lines of freeride vs dh vs xc. The key point is the shock is valved for a specific weight of rider.

I’ve got a DW-Link 5-Spot on which I’ve tried coil Lyrics, Marz Z1 Lights, and now 36 Floats. Haven’t tried the Vans though.
The Floats are as plush as the coil Lyrics to my mind, and quite a bit lighter. U-Turn on the Lyrics is a bit of a faff to wind down, so only really practical on long climbs. System on Z1 Lights (ETA) is much better as an on-off.
My next move is to reduce internally the travel on the floats from 160mm to 150mm to see how that feels.

Almost – I have a Ti 456 and a mate has a Prince Albert and I’ve ridden both back to back over a short stretch of trail. Both were set up with Pikes and similar finishing kit (big bars, short stems etc) and were 16″ and med respectively (i.e. v similar sizes).
In angles and riding position etc there is little to separate them from a practical perspective, although I’ve not studied them on paper. The On-One felt quicker and more alive, but I think this is primarily down to frame material rather than design. I suspect the steel frames would be v difficult to separate. Paint finish on the PA looks great esp in metallic purple, which may put it ahead of the 456 in looks-terms!
In smiles / £, both seem very difficult to beat, as based on the quick spin of the PA and longer on the Ti 456, the frames are a hoot to ride. Both of us also own 5-Spots, which are struggling to get a look-in at the moment!!!

LOCT all the way. You’ll end up doing more than you thought possible with the little one!!

I would steer clear of using anything that clamps purely to the seatpost on something like the 456Ti. Bikes such as this with a low standover tend to use long seatposts which would create substantial leverage on the post/frame. As mentioned the 456Ti has rackmounts which would be good, otherwise, I can personally recommend the LOCT – to my mind a much better solution for both rider and passenger!!

That’s them. I went to the one on the East side, but don’t suppose it makes any difference! Beware – plenty bling!

Sid’s Cycles. They have 2 stores. Found them very helpful when I bought an Ibis Mojo on a business trip out there.

Check out the review on Bikeradar – they loved ’em too. Was going to get a second pair but wanted them before June, so getting some Mavic SX’s instead – more expensive and heavier!!

Camp wild up by Glaslyn on the Staylittle road. Nowhere near town but a stunning location and a great downhill into town!

They are great wheels. Mine have taken a hammering for over a year, and only required true-ing after I stuck my size 8’s into the front wheel in a bizarre over-the-bars accident! This includes a week in the Lakes, and a severe casing of the rear wheel trying to clear a surpise ditch, which I was sure would cause the wheel to collapse.
With a light tubeless tyre, they are noticaby quicker than other “all-mountain” wheelsets I’ve used, incuding CK + Stans Flows. Go for it!

Pikes are still stiffer than the revs. If you don’t need that degree of stiffness then go for it.

Blue tape works for me, even with a few cuts in it. Need to use a sealant though.

I have to admit looking at these it shows how much bikes have moved on. I used to have versions of both Paces, and an ’89 Kona Explosif, and apart from sentimental reasons, I can’t imagine if I still had them I’d ever use them in anger over something like a Turner 5-Spot or a 456!

Yes my king headsets have scored the fork steerers. A load of stuff on this on MTBR, but basically king don’t use the split-washer system of the original aheadset design (which incidently requires a license fee) and uses a rubber o-ring instead to clamp the steerer. This isn’t as robust as the split-washer design, and after a period of time will score the steerer. I’m gradually moving away from kings as a result.

Keswick no longer have any in stock. Have ended up getting one direct from Wingnut who have been v good to deal with. Postage is a chunky $40 but they are throwing in a free wallet / organiser thingy.

Feeling slightly bummed that I bought a Ti 456 litterally a week before Brant left On-One, since as much as I love the 456, the Ragley sounds even more fun. Sh1t happens I guess.

TLR – interesting you can fit a 2.4″ Betty in the rear as I can’t fit a 2.4″ Nobby Nic in there!

Beware of following househusband’s routes – the time I went out with him involved an “interesting” section of porterage that would have benefitted from fixed ropes and sherpas!! 😉

Looking at the weeride website, I would say it looks cumbersome and industrial compared to an LOCT. Fine for towpaths etc but not for real offroad riding. The weeride looks fairly limited in terms of age range too.

I would check out the video clips on the LOCT vs the ones on the weeride, and decide what you want it for. If you are using the LOCT on decent offroad stuff, then it’s unlikely they’ll fall asleep!!

LOCT is awesome and allows the child much more interaction and understanding of what’s happening whilst on the bike. I had some memorable outings with my 3yr old daughter at the end of last summer with ours on the Turner 5-Spot that gave both of us a huge buzz. You really can ride some decent trails at a good speed to give them a good sense of the thrill – we ended up having to repeat a roll-in and out of a small valley (10ft deep) that we refered to as the rollercoaster because she loved the thrill of it!

She’s just mastered a balance bike and I’m sure some of her motivation for wanting to ride it is based on her experience on the LOCT / Turner from last year.

My 2yr old son is up next!!

PS They are expensive but the workmanship & design is very very good.

What TJ said – awesome descent. Also nice trails over the Cademuir Hills. Worth getting the route guide book, as a lot of the trails don’t appear on OS maps.

Personally I’d go with an 18″ med frame with the 23″ TT. That’s what I had and I’m 5’10.5″ with 32″ inside leg. I ran it with a layback post and 70mm stem and found it a riot. In fact I quite miss it!! Seem to be plenty around so reckon it’s worth holding out for the right size.

Excellent – still yet to see waxwings so most jealous! Fair few Red Kites over the Chilterns as usual today – remember seeing these birds back in the day around Rhayader when there were only around 50 pairs in the UK. A conservation success story!!
