Not for that price. There must be alternatives.

Thanks to you both, BTW, but we’re not there yet 🙂

Yes. I saw that. It’s out of stock.

You can use a standard shimano bottom bracket so a deore one for a tenner or in my humble opinion buy a hope one and never buy another!

    >>Lots more info in here<<

No. That thread refers to the MEGA EXO standard, not the BB386EVO.

BTW, I did buy a Shimano SM-BBR60 last time. The friend-of-a-friend whom I gave it to to fit said it was the wrong one and wouldn’t fit.

Yes. It brings up “Mega Exo 6000” BBs. The inside of my cranks say “For BBright BB386 EVO”. Hence my confusion.

No – definitely not a case of when 2 arseholes collide. You didn’t hold him up. At all.

I probably would have pulled over at some point anyway and let him through. Life’s worth more than a futile macho contest with a mouth-breather.

Your “victory” (if you cared) would then have been when you drafted him then overtook him again at the junction and blew him a little kiss.

I’ve looked at Youtube vids of this ride. All stop/start, dicing with walkers every ten yards. It isn’t on my to do list!

No MTB scene at all (that I found anyway) in the mid north coast of NSW, Australia. Even in Port Macquarie, home of Ironman Australia. Lots of fireroads and as much acreage of countryside as you’d want, but all 4x4s and motocross.

I once had an old 525i with 186k on the clock. Beware the running costs of a big Beemer. 4 tyres were £800. Exhaust parts were eyewatering. Alarm/central locking/immobiliser problem? £1000. In the end what seemed like a bargain ended up a money pit and I got rid. But maybe I was just unlucky.

But when you’re taking on an old diesel, you’re taking on an old turbocharger and whole high-pressure induction system. Just another complicated and expensive thing to go wrong?

I drive a big diesel Mondeo now. Not as flash as a BMW but as fast/powerful as the BMW and cheaper to run.

I’m considering building up a Planet X London Road this year so I can have a go at some of these Adventure Cross events.

They look like they have a good level of challenge for someone like me who’ll never be a good Enduro/DH rider but likes hills, bridleways, etc

Well, yes. Top Gear has just become shorthand for old-fashioned, predictable, macho and boring.

    1. Suggesting that a man has a vagina because he lacks the confidence to complete some sort of macho feat, then…

    2. Calling said vagina “lady parts”

are both totally “Top Gear” 😉

Blah blah look at my friend and what a rubbish MTBer he is.

    Really?

    Lady parts

All a bit “Top Gear” isn’t it?

If I was your “mate” I’d ride on my own in future.

Yep – I’ve had no problems with them over the years. Some smart-arsed replies to queries, but they’ve always delivered the goods.

It’s 71 miles mate and hilly. I personally would only consider doing it in a single day if I was starting at the crack of dawn.

Nothing ruins a bike adventure more than when it’s getting dark, you’re tired and hungry, and still miles from the B&B you’ve booked.

You could keep your short reach and add bar ends for greater reach when climbing. Not fashionable but very effective.

What do you use on your cross bike and MTB now?

    hebdencyclist

Heh – this sank quickly 🙂

    I don’t think there’s an ideal solution.

I’m torn between just building a PX London Road with a Tiagra triple (expense, faff, but will be able to use MTB pedals, plus will have enough gears even for hilly, fully-loaded touring)

…or buying off-the-peg with a double, and using my road pedals, which would be fine for commuting and bridleway/towpath duties, which would be 90% of the bike’s use anyway…

By the way, I think you may be out of luck with regards to hiring one. Just done some googling and that Mr Phoebus company comes up. However on their “Penny Farthing Experience” days, you don’t actually get to ride one 🙂

I assume they can’t get insurance to let people actually ride one.

    hebdencyclist

Indeed. Before that, it was just a “bicycle” 😀

    hebdencyclist

I’d love to have a go too.

Be careful when ringing round, though. Asking for a “Penny Farthing” marks you out as a noob. The bike is called an “Ordinary”.

Maybe a bit of all three but I think it’s mainly that there is a bit of tension round here between walkers and mountain bikers – lots of moaning about mountain bikes on footpaths on the local community forum for instance. No-one wants their favourite trail being made unridable or to get shouted at. I’ve seen strategically placed rocks on some trails that I strongly suspect are to put off bikers – plus new narrow gates etc.

Some people who only ride here every 2-3 months aren’t as bothered about pissing walkers/residents off as local riders are, and big groups riding popular footpaths at busy times is never going to go down well.

I’ve shown people I know and trust not to be dicks round some cheeky stuff round here. I’m not going to post routes on the net though.

    100% this.

The cyclist was riding too fast for the situation he was in

    In your opinion

on equipment far from ideal for the environment he was in (fact)

    Not a fact

    All speculation of course

    Bingo!

but when all is said and done the rider was not riding to the conditions

Well, y’know, perhaps the taxi driver was “not driving to the conditions” when he drove into the path of a cyclist.

Maybe the cyclist was being a knob. But those of us who weren’t there cannot pass judgement. It is telling how quickly people jump to condemn the cyclist on the basis of a subjective anecdote on the internet.

People grasp at stories which confirm their predisposed world view. “Bloody cyclist came out of nowhere” anecdotes are popular for this reason.

I’m assuming Moe is a cyclist and so would tend to see incidents from that perspective, yet still thinks the cyclist was a cock. That’s pretty much good enough for me

Moe, you have a fan! Use your power wisely…

When you say a “better” bike, what new components do you think will make you go faster, given that you have already upgraded your wheels?

You want a quality alu frame, but with respect, you already have one 🙂

    So you already have:

    1. A good frame, in your preferred material
    2. The right finishing kit for you
    3. Decent wheels

It sounds like if you just upgraded your groupset, you’d get the bike you want!

Of course, you don’t have to rationalise a new bike purchase. If you want one, just get one, but don’t pin your hopes on a new machine, very similar to you old machine, making you much faster!

As for building your own, I think you’ll find that it would be more expensive, even after adding your own bars/stem/saddle etc. Given that you will already have at least some of those parts, I personally would be inclined to buy a complete bike and either specify your ideal stem length etc in the original purchase (a decent dealer will do this for you) or just swap out for your own when you get the bike home.

Of course, once again, building a bike is fun and interesting but if you’re using new parts, will usually work out more expensive than an off-the-shelf bike.

Kudos to you for racing, though. I don’t have the bottle for it. Or the legs 🙂

If the situation’s not clear, we shouldn’t be so quick to condemn the cyclist.

Regardless of the guff on this thread, filtering (to either side) is perfectly legal for cyclists. Otherwise, we’d all have to sit in traffic with the cars and trucks.

However, there are times when filtering on the near side is inadvisable, because drivers do not always use their near side mirrors before manoeuvring (sp?) left. If the cabbie had been signalling left, then to attempt to filter on the near side was bloody stupid. However, we don’t know if this was the case. Futhermore, if the driver DID signal, we don’t know if he checked his mirror before he did so.

And yep, knocking the wing mirror off someone’s car is antisocial and not something I would ever do. However when you’ve just had someone try to kill you, you don’t always think rationally.

… also doesn’t excuse the cyclist from not anticipating the actions of other road users

That is ridiculous. You just blamed the victim of a left hook.

So, taxi driver left-hooks cyclist. Cyclist breaks his wing mirror.

Having spoken to the Lesotho MTb team at the commonwealth, I suspect that they would appreciate all sorts to keep the bikes they use and the ones for outreach going – clothes too.
    https://www.facebook.com/LesothoACEMTB

It’s making me think, perhaps we should organise a STW give away to something like this….? We could get it all gathered, and see if a forumite has some way of shipping out there.

Hold on a mo. ACE Lesotho (sorry, Sufferfest ACE Lesotho powered by Unitrans) already have several big commercial sponsors, including a bike sponsor (Giant) and a kit supplier (Pactimo). Will they really want/need all our old crap from our garages?

I think that giving our old bike bits to charity is a great idea, but we should consider where it would be most needed/wanted before we get carried away.

I have have a Hamax one (I forget which model) with the extended small-frame support bar.

I have it on my small-framed hardtail and both my lads have loved it. I’ve never fitted it to my full-sus but it would fit if I were to put it on there.
