Thanks for the suggestion – I’ve just looked at services and nothing like that is running.

Ah sorry – just read that you wear the “correct shoes” so it looks like you have done the above.

Get to a proper running shop, have your gait analysed on their machine, then get the shoes with the correct level of stability and cushioning for your gait.

    I made a coke-can shim. Yes I know – it’s not the point – but less trouble than sorting out a return/replacement.

We have the Outwell Aspen 500. The two “bedrooms” each have enough room for an inflatable double mattress so the kids (8 and 4) go in one and us in the other.

We’ve got the side extension that we use as a kitchen (actually, we often leave all that shit at home and just go to the café to eat)

PS I was also going to make a very witty comment about what cars Coldplay fans probably drive, but I couldn’t quite think of the punchline, so I’ll just leave that on the table.

    Have a good night.

There’s an enormous official car park at the Etihad. In addition, there are a dozen unofficial car parks all around the venue who’ll let you park on their land for a reasonable charge. You can’t miss the signs. You’ll be fine.

People that reference going to the gym as “Training” when in actuality they’ve not one single competitive event in their diary..

Dude it’s all preparation for the zombie apocalypse.

At work, we have a series of regular meetings. Someone jokingly nicknamed them COBRA after the government’s disaster emergency committee.

Now the meetings are just called COBRA and minuted as such.

I hate “gnarmac”. Not because it’s a neologism (which is fine by me) but because it doesn’t describe the type of riding it names.

    1. Give Age Concern a ring.
    2. Make a decision to have a cup of tea with him twice a week.

I took my lad to the East Bradford CC sessions at Richard Dunn sports centre. He got bored because he spent most of his time queuing up to ride round some cones, then joining the back of the queue again, when all he wanted to do was ride his bike.

You can have my dream job for free, given that I’ll never do it now, because I have kids:

Bicycle touring in Iceland is very popular, but there’s very little in terms of facilities outside of the city.

So open a bunkhouse/café/bike workshop/touring business in rural Iceland.

    There.

    Good luck!

Have you tried raving Dave? 48 hours of MDMA induced starvation and dancing helps quite a bit I hear.

Yeah but wanting to kill yourself on Tuesday isn’t conducive to overall health and wellbeing 🙂

    2kg healthily.

1200 calories per day chap, plus half of the calories you expend through exercise. Include 1g of protein for each kg of bodyweight. Cut out bread, pasta, breakfast cereal, fruit, potatoes and white rice. Say hello to eggs, tuna, avocados and chicken breast.

HIIT sessions when the kids are in bed. Loads on youtube you can do in your front room.

Use Myfitnesspal to log your calories/macros and exercise.

I have this setup with a few other bits n bobs (attachments, et bar and dip bars etc). I upgraded the weights.

    http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/premium-strength-package.php

Very pleased with it and happy to recommend it for the price. Have been doing 5×5 with it and made good progress.

It looks like great equipment and it obviously works for you but, with your extras, the cost is equivalent to 5 years’ membership at my gym. Personally I’d rather get out of the house and work out with others, than on my own in my garage with the box that the cat shits in 🙂

I’m looking to improve my general all-round fitness really (I want to look amazing).

The way to “look amazing” (for most of us) is to lower our body fat and increase the size of our muscles. There is no such thing as “toning” – that’s just marketing BS.

So you want to lose fat and build muscle? You need a programme, and the required equipment will stem from that.

Start with big compound lifts: Squats, deadlifts, presses, rows to get your major muscle groups working hard and burning fat. There are several off-the-shelf programmes that you can follow: Stronglifts 5×5 and Starting Strength being two of the most popular.

That Joe Wicks guy advocates HIIT sessions in his programme. They require less equipment, and you can choose the ones that you enjoy the most. I alternate punchbag sessions and kettlebell swings, with bodyweight exercises such as squat thrusts. Bear in mind, though, that Joe’s own God-like physique was not built on HIIT sessions – he lifts big.

I do HIIT sessions AFTER my lifting when I go to the gym, otherwise the sessions compromise my ability to lift.

Furthermore, I have found that heavy squatting compromises my cycling. SO I tend to ease off the squats until my major cycling events are over for the year, and then get right back on the squat rack through autumn and winter.

Lots of people say they don’t want to lift heavy weights, because they don’t want to be muscular. All I can say to that is, if you ever find yourself with TOO MUCH lean muscle mass, then that will be a very nice problem to have 🙂

Just be mindful of one thing – to transform your body shape you will need to consistently stress your muscles with weight they have never lifted before. That’s the principle of progression. So ignore the pink plastic dumbbell sets you get in Argos.

So to answer your question: A power rack, an Olympic bar and weights, a pressing bench. Something to do pull ups and dips on. Plus equipment for whatever HIIT sessions you enjoy: kettlebells, punch bag and gloves, whatever.

You don’t have to rush to sell the van before your insurance expires. When you do sell it and cancel the insurance, the insurer will refund you the unused portion of the premium.

No-one will buy a dented van. Telling them it’ll “only be £200 to get fixed” is no use. It’s a hassle that buyers will want to avoid.

Go through insurance, get it fixed properly, then sell it. Insurance renewal date is a side issue.

I fancy maybe trying to specialise in a type of art collection.

With respect I think you’re starting from the wrong end. If you buy what you enjoy having on your wall, then a collection will emerge.

Personally I like bold monochrome prints. There are galleries that specialise, and it is an inexpensive way to get original, interesting art on my walls. I have to cut through all the twee nonsense to find something worth hanging, and when I find an artist whose work I like, I follow them to see what they produce next.

I’ve never thought of my collection as a collection, and it probably isn’t worth very much money, but I have walls that reflect my personality and interests, rather than the standard Ikea/Jack Vettriano stuff that everyone goes for.

Selecting a car based on the sound from the factory stereo. I like, it, but…

…Surely they’re all going to be the same? Mid-market units from a handful of manufacturers who all use the same components anyway, connected with any old wires, with speakers fitted into wobbly plastic panels in your doors?

…so if you cared about high-end sound you’d upgrade anyway?

…but then you’re playing compressed MP3s, so it wouldn’t matter how “good” your stereo is…

…so what is it you’re listening for? Do you want faithful, detailed and transparent sound reproduction? Because you won’t get it with a factory car stereo playing MP3s.

Have just reread my post. It sounds grumpy. Sorry. **** it I’m pressing send.

To be fair, shock can do that to some people as an automatic response when adrenaline is flowing.

I think that’s extremely generous of you!

I’ve been *almost* knocked off my bike twice in my life. Responses from the shocked drivers were (in order)

    Shit! Are you OK mate?

    and

**** hell I’m really sorry. Are you OK?

I (to my shame) once drove into the back of someone on the motorway. My own car was a mangled wreck. My first words to the driver:

    Are you OK?

He’s sat in the middle of the road nursing his broken bits, various other drivers get out of there cars, the Jaguar driver is going apocalyptic. Screaming at the roadie about the damage to her car, how she’s late, etc.

Some people are just so classy.

From what I can see, you don’t need the optional case, and the out-front bike mounts are available for a couple of quid from Ebay, so you don’t need the “extras” in the £159 Halfords deal. They’re £132 from Wiggle.

The longest I’ve run mine with screen on was around 8.5 hours and it still had a reasonable amount of battery life left, probably from memory 10%+

edit – that was whilst in use navigating, by the way.

Thanks for that. **** it – I’ve just bought one 🙂

Following with interest too. I want something that will give me turn-by-turn directions for Ride to the Sun and Dunwich Dynamo (I take a wrong turn every year!) and with sufficient battery life for those long rides.

I take it the Touring is too unreliable to be used for this purpose?

Well a lot of people in Wales are multilingual and frequently switch from English to Welsh (or a combination of both). Do you feel threatened when people is Spain speak Spanish for example? Quite a lot of paranoia going on there

Completely agree. Was going to post something similar myself. Welsh people in Welsh town “speak Welsh” shocker 🙂
