Brilliant that’s all done, thank you.

One more for you. In my code column, I want code “X” to mean “no spending day”. So for “X”, I don’t want to calculate the sum of anything, I just want it to count the number of X’s in order to output “number of no spending days” for each month.

Used to live in Teddington. The Shambles on the High Street is a lovely informal dining brasserie type place

Do an advanced search for the prices others have sold for. This should be your price guide.

No expert on the item in question but I think your 600 Euros might be optimistic 😉

I’ve met Graeme Obree. I asked him if he felt bad when he saw Chris Boardman getting money, fame and success on the continent while his own short pro career famously ended in disaster.

His answer was highly generous, honest and reflective. Because that’s what Graeme is like. Then he posed for a photo with me, gave me his address in Kilmarnock, and buggered off 🙂

That man is a true diamond.

Oh and if you want an interesting story, ask Graeme about doping.

After getting my MTB nicked 3 years ago, just got another on eBay. Genesis Latitude steel hardtail. Planning some adventures.

Turning my gravel bike (Planet X London Road) into a winter commuter with 28mm tyres and mudguards.

Turned up to the club ride on my road bike yesterday, but ‘cos it was raining, no-one else was out. time to find a new club 🙄

Hiya.
If you want to borrow some guidebooks for the Peak/Lakes/Wales/Yorkshire, let me know.
Just over the hill, can drop them off for you.

Where are you mate? I’m Ripponden these days. Could I take a ride over to you one night this week?

Good set of responses – thanks all.

Very strange combination. Why not 3 days in Wales?

‘cos I want to try a N Wales trail centre, Long Mynd (heard it’s good riding), and a big natural wildernessy day. Doesn’t have to be the Peak District – it was just an idea.

They’re all half a day ride, is this what you were trying to achieve?

Hmmm maybe I could do more…

High peak trail. Do you really mean the disused railway line?

Oh – no. That would really suck. Think I was confusing it with something else. No I want a big challenging wilderness loop on natural trails where I don’t see another soul all day, scare myself shitless with the riding, and get some good photos of the scenery.

‘Kinder Enduro’

Oooh…

Depending on how much riding you want each day you could do marin/Penmachno before Llandegla.

Great idea – thanks

Day two you could do either Hopton or Eastridge onto the long myndd

I’ll look into that.

Go stay at the Dales Bike Centre up in Swaledale and get 3 days of awesome riding off the doorstep?

and that.

I’d stay in Wales, do the world’s end extension to degla so it lasts more than half a day, then drive over to where it all started Coedybrenin and sack off the high Peak trail and do the marin or the long mynd with a longer drive.

and that.

Whatever you do, enjoy it!!

Thank you

I once moved to a brand new housing development, most people seemed okay, but there was definitely a feeling of entitlement there. Could possibly only have been that estate, but I’m in no rush to continue the experiment.
YMMV.
Also, IME parking is a lot worse on new estates, as they’re generally full of folks that then need 3 or 4 cars to get them and their offspring to work, as the estates are on the fringes of town (and they’re lazy bastards) but there’s not enough space on the drive, and no or minimal pavements. Odd shaped streets as well, so parking is at a premium.

Oh, spot on.

We’re on a new estate. I think it’s in the building regs that they can only put in a certain number of parking spaces. Most of the neighbours are great but we do have our share of Parking Bellends, who think that the bit of road outside their house belongs to them.

And yep – it’s a complete driving culture. Everyone here has an Audi or one of those baby Range Rovers on tick. I’ve never seen anybody cycling. There’s a Co-Op half a mile away, and people drive to it, and queue to park.

Did a 6 mile run on the moors on Saturday. Chased by 2 loose dogs. Ignorant, unapologetic owners.

Went for a ride with my lad on Sunday, in sheep country. “Lambing season” signs everywhere, still people with loose dogs chasing the sheep.

Back at car park, having sandwiches in the car, two Dobermans got in our car and tried to eat the picnic. Owner completely unapologetic.

Fed up of dodging shit and seeing plastic bags full of shit hung up on bushes and trees.

Dog owners. It’s the 99% that give the others a bad name.

Is it signposted or do I need to sort out remembering how to navigate?

I’ve made a .gpx for my Garmin. Let me have your email if you want it.

I’ve also marked the route on an OL12 map, and I have this map on my phone for the bit that goes off the edge of OL12 (although I know that part of the route anyway 🙂

I’ve never done the whole thing but bits of it, round Boulsworth Hill, wouldn’t attempt it on a gravel bike, need some meaty rubber and pref full sus as suggested by others. Mates who’ve done it confirm it’s hard graft, gnarly, difficult to get momentum going..

MTL doesn’t go over Boulsworth Hill?

Thanks all. Have just done a GPX of it for my Garmin and will be giving it a go next Sunday, starting early and giving myself plenty of time.

OP, you did nothing wrong but were the victim of ignorance and aggression. I hope this doesn’t put you off taking photos at public events in the future.

You might have felt “weak” by walking away, but I would have done exactly the same. Because what was the alternative? Stand your ground and have a fight? You did the civilized thing.

Met the love of my life on OKCupid.

There’s lots of negativity about online dating on here. In my experience, it’s an absolute blast. Even the disastrous dates with unsuitable weirdos are worth it for the stories. Putting them aside, there’s loads of fun and romance to be had. You’ll make some friends, you’ll have some sex, and you might fall in love.

Remember – most men’s complaints about online dating are that the women ignore them. Most women’s complaints are that the men are boring.

So cut out the pies, hit the gym, be interesting, write an honest, entertaining profile, invest in a nice, striking outfit that suits you (if you wear jeans and a checked shirt to a first date, you deserve to be celibate for ever) and have fun 🙂

I have a 2016 Logan with the TCe engine. I’m very happy with it. Power-wise, it does motorway speeds without needing to be thrashed, and I overtake stuff on country roads when I need to. That’s all the power I need in a car.

Boot is absolutely huge, and (although it’s a matter of opinion) I think it looks quite good 😀

I did the free trial but never took up a subscription.

The best thing I found on there was an American magazine for people who spend their lives preparing for the apocalypse. It’s all reviews of assault rifles and build-your-own-bunker articles. It’s awesome.

I’ve been on the other end of the problem – ie I’ve been the nuisance smoker.

I noticed that when I went into the back garden for a fag, next door would shut their window (they always have all their windows open for some reason).

I asked them about it one day – “do you smell my cigarette smoke when I’m smoking in the garden?” They said that sometimes yes, they did.

So I took to smoking at the far end of the garden – well away from their house. But they’d still go though the shutting the window routine when I went out to smoke. In the end I just had to accept that short of giving up smoking or moving house, I wasn’t going to please them, so I stopped worrying about it. I was undertaking a legal activity on my own property and had taken reasonable steps to minimise the nuisance.

As it happens, I’ve given up smoking now, so problem solved all round.

You’re many, many times more likely to die in a pile-up on the motorway on the way to Heathrow than you are to die in a terrorist attack in Turkey.

We go every year, including just after the coup attempt last summer.

he’s going to an all inclusive hotel with small glasses, lots of russians and staff who dont like westerners.

I’ve never found any of this in Turkey. Mate you must have been on some terrible holidays 😉

I’m trying to make my son a basic table/chairs form old pallets. I discovered yesterday that not cutting straight is a real issue.
WHat skills/saw would be best to help ?
A circular saw looks like it would be useful for quickly cutting down pallets. I was doing this by hand yesterday and it took ages!
A sliding mitre saw seems like it is the thing for straight/square cuts. I was doing this by hand yesterday and ended up with lots of non straight cuts!
Is there a compromise in between?
Do I need clamps or a work bench to make things easier?
Can i rig up some guides and just use a circular saw instead of buying a mitre?
Do i just need to improve my technique using some basic woodwork secrets?
I see a future of building tree houses, various pallet based stuff, shelves etc. I want to avoid big expenditure if possible.

I use pallet wood a lot. Pry bar and hammer to dismantle the pallets, table saw to square/joint the wood, compound mitre saw for cross cuts, then hand plane and/or random orbital sander for smoothing/thicknessing.

Of course you can do everything by hand and just practise your cutting. A decent saw helps a lot. I use Tooltique for my hand tools. If you have limited space/money/tools then this book is a really practical guide to working that way. But I’ll be honest – the power tools help me be more accurate and more productive in the limited time I have.

Also, have a look at Chris Gleeson’s book of pallet projects. Also follow him on Instagram – he’s really inspirational.

To answer you other questions, yes you need lots of clamps of different sizes for securing work on your bench, and also for holding glued work securely while it dries. They’re cheap on eBay/Amazon or in The Range and Home Bargains etc.

A work bench that doesn’t move when you’re trying to saw/plane/chisel is a godsend. You can make one out of cheap softwood from B&Q/local timber yard. There’s a plan for one in that Minimalist Woodworker book I linked to. Personally I’m in the middle of building one based on this one from Fine Woodworking magazine.

Oh and reusing pallet wood is a great way into woodworking, but beware mission creep. You’ll start off wanting to make a spice rack out of an old pallet, but before long you’ll be pricing up hardwood boards 😉

I’ve just taken delivery of vintage Stanley 220 plane, and have used it for chamfering today. Once you get the blade sharp you’re set.

Faithfull are a budget brand. They’re probably fine for some items but I wouldn’t have a plane from them when you can pick up a restored Record or Stanley block plane for less than £20.

Where I’m struggling is seeing the insult in the joke

I think you said it yourself:

insidious normalisation of homophobia

I agree that what was written wasn’t the most hateful and offensive thing ever said about homosexuals, but that it adds to the sum of “arse against the wall”-type playground spite that gay people still, apparently, are expected to put up with in public discourse.

the somewhat ridiculous way he is handling this.

What? Sticking to his guns and refusing to be silenced by a barrage of obfuscation and ridicule?

I would have given up by now, too, but props to him for standing up for a principle.
