I might have been up for it except i've got Domestic Duties.
I had been planning a ride this afternoon, considered Shining Cliff and/or Black Rock but thought they were considered off limits at weekends – happy to be told otherwise!

I wish it was – naked rims on concrete make me shudder.

and I revel in the whole of it, whether lush or stark, rolling or precipitous, warm or piercingly frigid.

A cynic might say that is delusion and that you have never *truly* experienced nature, only a narrow perspective on it shaped by the framing effect of a camera viewfinder; it's funny that you should try and provide a counterpoint to drawings of the countryside by using photographs. Photographs are not the same as the experience and are as subjective (framing, selection, editing etc) as any painting.

What's to gets anyway? It's not as if anyone is trying compel others to erect fetishes to the sheep God. Jo draws, paints and writes about his take on mountain biking and it resonates with a number of people who like how he sees things – it porbably coincides with some aspects of their take on mountain biking. And they are numerous/voiciferous enough for their appreciation of the sheep to be seen as one of the many components of the culture of mountain biking. Just as for some people stopping to photograph every few hundred yards of a ride is a way of trying to capture the 'truth' of the experience – for some that has a resonance, for others it doesn't.

Mitsubishi Cult. One of the reasons I got it is because the rear seats are completely removable (or, you can leave in a 1 or 2 person section of seating): you can fit shitloads of stuff in the back despite it being a tiny, economical car. They redid the body recently so I don't know if it's still true of the 2008+ ones – no reason why it shouldn't be true.

Okay, cheers for the info, much appreciated. It's dragging on for us a bit now so it's useful to know it's fairly normal.

Summer 1991 (i think, sketchy memories) which would make me 21. I set off from Barcelona on my Claud Butler Majestic and after a few days of making my way down the coast with inland forays my rear wheel started dying. I nursed the bike back up to Barcelona and, on the way met a Yank with a mountain bike. I envied his sturdy steed.

My mind clouded by weed, I came to the conclusion that Spain had no bike shops so flew back to the UK. Remembering my dad telling me a few months earlier that he'd got a mountain bike (Al Carter 'Professional')I decided to go and visit my folks. He hadn't used it, I borrowed it and went and had a blissful couple of weeks taking it up to the Hebrides. Brought it back and had a week with them which meant taking it round/over the Cheviots and Simonside. The bug bit. I got a Univega Alpina and my poor Majestic began to gather dust…

Sadly, yet another good news story from the classifieds. Chap sold me some wheels. Good price, exactly as described, got them to me in good time. Oh the humanity!

their mechanics were properly surly when it came to the free service – implying that I was riding it too much.

    Awesome.

I also like the implication that being geared (ho hum) towards the fakenger set they haven't quite got the hang of proper bikes. How I miss Londinium.

Sorry to hear about your experiences but once you find a decent LBS you'll be glad.

It's a great book, but not if your idea of mountain biking is following arrows round a well groomed trail centre with a nice cafe at the end. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not the sort of riding KW's book is about.

Which is exactly why I got it 🙂

Cheers AlasdairMc, mine arrived today. Crackin' stuff 🙂

Agree with the sentiment, but "ugly" is rarely a good description of Apple devices.

Normally I would agree but i think the pad hasn't been particularly well thought out on any front. And I'm not an Apple hater by any stretch of the imagination – if anything I just expect better from them.

or a 3rd party launched a universal remote app

If it's a 3rd party the pad won't let you multitask. Which would be a pain.

Ach, anyway, I'm off to read a book.

But if you already have a laptop which will do this (albeit in not quite such a slinky way) plus a lot more besides it's not obvious that you'd pay £500 for one.

And given that most of its target punters already have a laptop which will probably be less ugly than the pad I really can't see the point of it. Sorry for beating the same drum again but I was hoping for so much more than an Everything-Lite™.

I expect 'The Emporer's New Clothes' will be expurgated from any editions of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales that are sold through iTunes. Equally, I'm sure that there will be a market for big, unwieldy iPhones that won't display iPhone apps properly and that you can't make phone calls on. Admittedly the iPhone may be useful for people learning to squint given that it's ereader function hasn't got anything approaching the Kindle's digital ink.

Still, the world of commerce is no doubt grateful for the market segment allegedly identified by PT Barnum as being born every minute.

A real pity as I hoped that this would be a mould-breaking bit of kit but it's a huge step backwards, for shame.

But they are increasingly dependant on Russia for energy. Not very bright when it comes to energy security.

As I said, they're very good at building things. Long term strategies (especially involving Russia) – not so good.

    HeathenWoods

Tbh, I'd follow the Germans – who tend to be better at building things than us (yeah, gross generalisation, i know) – are phasing out their reactors due to the incidence of cancer clusters round power stations. (some details here: http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/society/health/nuclear+cancer+risk+doubled/1300847 )

Ah, yes. So that'll be why that nice Mr Blair and that equally nice Mr Clinton resorted to carpet bombing the 'civil disturbance'. Zulu Eleven? Zulu second eleven more like.

paying with paypal THATS the idea ?get paid asap ..get the goods asap

But if money's tight for him and he's relying on the Paypal money going into his bank account to pay for the postage that could take, what? Up to ten days or soemthing like that? Factor in the post being stretched and a wait is on the cards.

    HeathenWoods

Nay. There is sufficient evidence that it causes cancers in areas surrounding the reactors and no TV could ever be wide enough to justify powering it with dirty energy like that.

Cheers all. Confirmed that it all sounds great, roll on the summer 🙂

Hijack away munkster. We'd definitely be looking at Cromford if it wasn't just outside the 25mins driving from her mum's that my missus has stipulated 🙄 – some decent off piste riding and a great book shop/café.

Cheers all – I think creeping doubt set in when I read about the fella who had his bike nicked and someone made a passing reference to Kilburn being a bit rough (I mean, it's getting on towards Notts!! 😉 but I'd never really heard anything so I wondered if it was me not knowing about rural crime hotspots 🙂

We're really looking at 5 mile radius round Belper. I really fancy Heage but I'm not sure why! Ambergate would be great. Anywhere with fields, woods and fresh air nearby really. I'll watch out for parking issues; I started driving in Nov and the missus is hoping to pass before we move so it'll be a consideration.

Grateful for the curry house recommendation 🙂

Not strictly sci-fi, more gothic fantasy horror with a bit of steam punk influence. But excellent, very dark, scary

Using solely observation alone: Audis seem to be spectularly bad in this weather. A surprise really but the only alternative is that it's the drivers and that can't be the case, now can it?

    I'm from Morpeth originally

I grew up the road in Longhorsley. My mum and dad now live near Duddo – and are completely cut off with about 2ft+ of snow. It gives my dad plenty of time to laugh at the South's flap over a couple of inches 🙂

    No pic. Sorry.
