Throw off the shackles of timid Christianity and quit this hubris. Asceticism went out with the monks; hair shirts and divinely ordained eating plans dividing sacred and immoral foods.

The moment a cow clip clops out a question about what tyres for their 29er is the moment I'll reconsider the 'cruelty' of farming tasty din-dins. Until then, yes, i think i will chow down. Yum.

My brain's failed me as to their name but there was a timeless, peerless poster who used to ruminate on smoking weed and the true value of santa cruz bikes and their riders… something to do with 'industrial biking' website? If that was the name of it…

after having to bend it back to shape for want of a simple replaceable part that all aluminium frames have anyway!

If that's a big deal to you why not get an ally frame?

Bend it, bend it back. No biggy. Scuffed bike? Yep, that's what happens when you ride 'em.

I like to be independant, if I don't want to ride I go walking instead, no worrying about holding people up. Am actually happy with my own company.

Yep, that sounds familiar. I enjoy having a bit of mental space from family (as much as i love 'em) and work (even tho' i enjoy it) and sometimes the feeling of solitude in the great outdoors can be sublime.

This summer I'm heading off to the Torridons by myself – maybe Skye too if all goes well – and i can hardly wait 🙂

I have to take the missus and kids to ASDA. The sooner she can drive the better.

Ha. So it does vary a bit. I can see dave_r's in zummerzet but where's "here" Northwind?

    Fair point druidh 🙂
And andrewh! I'd forgotten how emergency signals worked on mobiles.

Drac and grantway too. I think vodaphone is edging it a little with o2 a close second.

Which area are you most concerned with? Get the most detailed coverage map for that area you can find.

Where I live has fairly uniform cover (Derby), as has where we're thinking of moving (Belper) but it's the rest of the UK, particularly the hilly bits that I was wondering about.

Well that's a spanner in the works Creg! lol.

I like your thinking bassspine but missus heathen has said she wouldn't think it were that clever when I'm "lying in some valley with a broken leg, dying of exposure." Very dramatic turn of phrase has mrs H

Aha – so T-Mobile don't make the cut (I think I just hoped they did out of happy memories of Der Kaiser and his myspace page)

    Past favourites:

    Fire XC Pros
    Nevegals

    In the shed to try:
    Spesh Eskars
    Geax Barros

But then, as with a lot of components, tyres follow the simple formula:

    S=p(10-n)

    Where S=satisfaction; p=price; n=number of months owned

as per the above – i'd say a 14" would be fine. Build it for her and enjoy what you have

Heh. I'm guessing the frame and build budget ate into the camera budget 🙂

One of my former students seems to have set up a bike company… stanton bikes.

yet to see one of theirs in the flesh so can't really comment any further but i like what i see so far

I think I'll have a look at mobiles.co.uk – they seem like pretty good deals and the site I saw (http://www.buymobilephones.net) seems to border on dodginess.

Heh, if I'm honest, pjbarton I'm never going to be that bothered by any particular phone but, at the same time, I do want to get a decent one 🙂

All good points CZ (and i like the turbine shot) – the thing is we're saving for a house at the mo' so my photographic ambitions are limited to a battered compact. If I had a decent camera i'd take the iPhone over the N86 without a second thought.

Although, having said that, I have just spotted a site offering a free Panasonic FZ38 with monthly contract phones on the big networks – i might look into that in a bit more depth before i make a decision…

A-ha! Lovely, thanks. Only problem now is the crappy camera. Maybe I'll toss a coin between it and the Nokia. Not too excited by the Palm

I'll give that a go. We get so little chance to pick up the phone in the daytime that we tend to rely on email in the evenings.

I'm doing my best to avoid dredging up old history but I remember forswearing Superstar because of the less than engaging forum history of 'fruit'/Neil from SS.

Edit: I see Kit remembers the threads too.

Heh. Funnily enough, on the wall above my desk I have the very symbol that the-muffin-man has posted above. I think the slogan from Bullshit Detector Vol.2 would work well….

Missed this the first time round. Great idea for a thread; here's a couple more..

    Derby.
    The Flower Pot
    Brunswick Inn

    Derbyshire.
Old Oak Inn in Horsley Woodhouse
The Red Lion Inn in Birchover (it's now surpassed the sadly over-rated Druids Inn)

    Turks Head, Rothbury.

Ha. I nearly remember drunken teenage nights in the basement there many moons ago (tbh, it might also have been the Newcastle Arms). I can only guess it's moved upmarket in the intervening years, but then again I hear Rothbury has as a whole.

Oh. And some Geax Barro Mountains from the classiflids

    Racing Ralphs all year round.

Now where's the salt for my eyes and Beech whip?

Lol. And hair shirt, don't forget your hair shirt.

I'm a lazy mofo when it comes to swapping tyres over but even I have winter pairs. I tip my hat to your single mindedness.

I think Halfords ahve some Apollos for sale?

    Just kidding. Get the Ibis.

Same thing here – a stinking cold, not enough exercise, too much "starving the fever, feeding the cold" and someone has strapped half a beach ball to my waistline.

I think it's a bug that's going round 'cos exactly the same thing's happened to me.

Hmmm, that's if you thought New Rose was a punk single,it never did it for me at the time, but then in later years I began to appreciate it a lot more.

I guess it also depends which definition of punk you're using – Greg Shaw was using the term "punk rock" in the early 70s to describe 60s garage bands. And then there's The Stooges. I mean, shit, you listen to the out-takes from the Raw Power demos like 'Gimme Some Skin' and you realise how toothless a lot of UK punk, from 5 years later, sounds in comparison. Not taking away from the '76/'77 stuff, just saying there's been a down and dirty punk side to pop for years

Those three above are lovely. I don't normally like night ride pics – once you've seen one streaky set of lights you've seen 'em all – but those are canny.

TGon's is quite, err, special too 🙂

Else: swoopy, twisty, smooth with the odd rock garden thrown in to keep you on your toes.

I have to be honest, I've never dusted in my life but if I did I'm sure Sabbath would mean lots of broken stuff after over enthusiastic air-featherduster.

    In the meantime,

She's Got Balls – The Cramps
    I'm a Boy – The Who
Transvestite Blues – Demented are Go!

    just saying….

    maybe more usefully:

Dustbin Mod – The Buff Medways
    Dust of Time – Hawkwind
    Scratches and Dust – Coil
Dusty Nothing – Dead Meadow (judging from the above you might actually like this one 🙂
From a Dry Camel – Dust
Viking Cleaner – Øresund Space Collective (awesome new space rock)
    Dusty Baker – Tadpoles
    Dirty Love – Motorhead
    Crop-dust – The Fall
Don't Mess Me Round – The Buzzcocks
Dirty Old Man – Thee Headcoatees
    Dust – Armitage Shanks
    Messed Up – Culture Shock
    Dirty Squatters – Zounds
    Dust – 13th Floor Elevators
Dirt of Tilth – The Red Crayola
    Dust – Silver Apples
    Dirt Glow – Rose Kemp
The Forest of Black – Dirty Filthy Mud
    Dirt – The Stooges
    Dust – Flying Saucer Attack
Mess of My – The Fall

    and of course,

    Stay Clean – Motorhead

Which, if i say so myself, is a pretty good showing on the old dirty/clean songs front
