I know exactly what you’re describing. I went from a 26″ old school XC frame to a modern 27.5 Scout. The overall length and head angle make it feel much less nimble in comparison.

Tried a few brands but not as many as most, got some 100% Ridecamp and absolutely love them. Might be a little thin for winter.

Yes that was my experience. Lock the lever off, lower it beyond the lever and the fluid will come up to the bleed screw. Then screw it in and let it spill out a bit to ensure no air trapped.

Just fitted a pair of these also with new Storm HC discs. A key part of the bleed video for me was manipulating the height of the caliper to stop fluid escaping when removing the syringe, first holding it above the lever then lowering to get an airtight seal.

I’ve only done one bed in ride but the front is pretty fierce already. The rear less so but hope it’ll improve with some more riding. Don’t know if this really helps you, sorry!

Replacing an old Carerra commuter which donated most of it’s (non standard previously updated) parts:

    Cove

Cove HJ, Exotic carbon fork, 1×9 SRAM, Hope Pro2 hubs with 26 rims, Avid Elixir brakes.

It does bother me! Haha. I’ll use it to test the A2C length then swap it for something more visually pleasing. Cheers.

Hi! Here’s another thread which helped my arrive at the decision the freehub was worn: https://forums.mtbr.com/santa-cruz/about-your-novatech-hubs-1089830.html

If your body is alloy then there’s a good chance the same as happened. I’m still using the original ratchet ring with a new freehub. I think it comes out by design – it’s a nice snug fit and has zero play so I am not concerned about that at all.

Nukeproof actually sent me a replacement freehub and ratchet ring, which I’m very happy about. Should keep me going for a while longer without having to change the rear hub.

Ratchet ring is available on Novatec website for a fiver, but if it’s not excessively worn I’d leave it alone.

Thanks Phil_H! I’ve submitted a warranty claim via the retailer, I’m just within the 2 years..

I’ve also ordered and fitted a new freehub, apparently the earlier alloy ones had a design flaw which leads to excessive wear and the pawls moving around causing my symptoms.

    My freehub damage: https://photos.app.goo.gl/5Etcs6bU4Hw6ove48

This is the replacement 3-pawl steel freehub that fits my Neutron hub/33t ring perfectly: https://www.wiggle.co.uk/nukeproof-neutron-freehub-body-shimano/?sku=597896

It’s all back together and working fine again. The ratchet ring is press fit, it’s not that tighter interference fit but there’s definitely no play so I think that’s a red herring.

    Thanks all.

Have read about that on some reviews. Pawls seem undamaged, if anything something has maybe worn resulting in slippage. If the ring comes out on all of them, I could buy a complete new rear hub for 50 quid and fit the ring and keep the replacement bearings and freehub for spares. If not, now’s the time to upgrade.

Unfortunately it’s out of warranty, got it April 2018.

    Ratchet ring sounds right, thanks!

It’s not loose but removable. Sits snugly in grooves like a cassette. I hoped this would mean I could upgrade it, assuming this is some sort of standard.

Cheers I was unsure on loctite being acceptable there, but a few dabs may be OK I guess!

It’s a square taper crankset and internal bottom bracket, fairly dated design I believe. May just be I didn’t tighten them up enough but hopefully that’s the case.

I bought the black one with cable Tektro brakes years ago.  Rode it through all weathers for about 3 years and never gave it any maintenance.  Did a sterling job.

I’ve just recommissioned it with a single speed conversion and Avid hydraulic brakes, still on original everything else and it still rides well and does the job.

Just a follow up for the benefit of others. I bought the Large and it’s sized perfectly.

Good advice chaps cheers. I’ll take it to Pines next week and give them a go in the wild before making any rash decisions.

Up for buying some spare bars if anyone has some for sale! That said mine are just basic alloy risers that came with it.

The current one is a bit of a pain for stuff like that. Straight steerer and 26” wheels. Hard to find forks and tyres and reluctant to spend on old tech.

Sounds like I should just bite the bullet and buy it and see if I like it. It’s a 2018 model so shouldn’t be a hard sell in 6 months if not for me.

Unless anyone in Nottingham fancies letting me have a go on their modern bike tomorrow? ;)

Part of the struggle is fitness, but it’s also pretty harsh which I hoped bigger tyres would help with.

I’m due a new bike anyway (and also want to treat myself due to a recent work redundancy!), the current one’s 7 years old and needing a bit of work here and there.

Can Rebas have their travel reduced?

I guess there’s ways of fixing it by either changing travel or the headset adjusters.

    Decisions decisions!

Great thanks for the advice. I’m not planning to be a downhill god so it sounds like I may be better off with something a little milder to get the most enjoyment.

67 and 130mm sounds like it may be better than 65 and 140 then.

Nukeproof scout 275 took my fancy

so far Pines and Cannock red routes. They’ve been a real pain and think I’d benefit from bigger than 26×2 tyres for starters

I’m on a medium 2010 Rockhopper at the moment.  The Scout has 20mm more reach than that according to my measurements, if that helps the L/XL decision.

I’ve just fitted a Decathalon 2L to my MULE that didn’t come with one.  I have no experience of any others, I’ve used it once, but it seems to work.

I wonder if an impact gun on the cassette tool would bosh it off.

    Helicoiling a rivnut sounds ridiculous.

If it gets drilled out just make sure the “inside” has somewhere to go or it’ll rattle around.

Picked up  a bladder from Decathalon, 2L, £8, seems to fit well and be the right shape.

I did it on my commuter with the following for <£30, 18 of that being the tensioner.

    Original front chain ring

A2Z single speed kit (16+18T rings plus spacers)

    4Jeri tensioner

    <span style=”font-size: 12.8px;”>Spare 9 speed chain I had lying around</span>

Uniroyal Rainsport is always popular amongst my friends. Technically a summer tyre but excellent wet performance.

2017 Sentier for £800 looked a good deal, I was on the verge of buying one too.

Fitted mudguards on the bike to keep the worst off you – this time of year there’s puddles even if it’s not been raining.

Shoes and trousers in a locker and take a folded shirt every day.

I looked at the M19 but not 11 speed compatible and want to future proof it for when I go 1×11?

I can report some success. Kit: A2Z rear single speed kit with 16T, 4-Jeri sprung tensioner. Original 38T front chain-ring and 9sp chain.

I originally set it up for 18T but found the chain jumping under moderate pressure when I fitted the 16T, so had to shorten the chain to suit. Unfortunate, as I wanted to swap between the two gears freely.

First commute on it this morning, something has a slight vibration and noise which I suspect is the bearingless jockey wheel on the tensioner. But pretty happy with how easy it was.

That answers that question then, I need a new derailleur too…

Why wouldn’t it be an upgrade?

I think I’d struggle with 1×9 at the moment although I could try it for the price of a chain ring I guess – not a bad idea.

That fork is utter genius haha.

I ordered some bits to try out: A2Z spacer kit with 16 and 18 tooth gears (just so happens to be the two gears I wanted to go with my 38t chainring) and a 4-Jeri spring tensioner. I will report back how I get on.

Don’t need anything posh thanks. Cheap and cheerful for me!

I can’t find a reasonably priced sprung tensioner mind. Might try the DMR Kit if there’s no horror stories

I’ll check out the Charlie one thanks.

I plan to run it pushing upwards, I much prefer the look of the “multiple small spacers” in some kits (e.g. DMR, eBay ones) to get the right chainline compared to the On-One big spacers.

Specialized do set-back droppers. I had a similar search, ended up with an external 30.9 Specialized Command dropper – the one with an expanding collet and 3 set positions.

£230 new about £100 second hand for the one I was getting.
