3 years in now and our little girl is a scream! I love getting home and seeing her bounce around shouting “daddy, daddy, daddy, DADDY!” It puts a smile on my face every time I think about it. The days I leave before she wakes up and get back home after she’s gone to bed are horrible!

It’s funny how their affection shifts from mummy to daddy depending on who’s shes spent the most time with, she went through a really clingy stage where her amazing confidence dissapeared at about 2.5 years but thankfully has got through that and is back to her usual hilarious self.

My favourite time has to be when I ask her if she wants to go outside and play, no matter what the weather is like it’s always a “YES, can I ride my bike/scooter?”

regarding riding, I don’t go out on weekends as that family time, I work Saturday morning so don’t want to go out for hours, I’ll do a 2-3 hour ride sometimes while she’s asleep on a Sunday but depends what needs doing round the house. Mostly commuting and night riding during the week keeps me happy.

Huge shame it won’t be on BBC! I’ll have to investigate this BT Sport thing then… Is it streamed?

My only beef with the coverage which is nothing to do with the network is the constant shots to pit garages to see what team managers or girlfriends reaction is to something that’s happening on track!

I’ve recently gone from a Cove Stiffee to a 456 and now a Bfe. All great bikes with slight differences, nothing too dramatic.

Current favourite is the current bike the Bfe, it really seems to bring the trail alive….. Seems to change direction nicer than the 456 but not as forgiving on the rear.

Going from the Cove to the 456 was like having rear suspension, less of a difference to the Bfe fro the 456 though.

    All good fun bikes.

I have a 29″ Inbred and at 5’6″ I find it fine. It’s fairly long so a 50mm stem make it better.

Good fun up and down techy steep rocky stuff. I can’t say I’ve noticed it any less chuckable but maybe I’m not very sensitive to such things…

honkiebikedude, presumably there is a database of information on this that should be followed to do the job properly is there? I’ve heard of AutoData etc. Would this type of database recommend tht both belts and tensioners are replaced or would this be an experience “in the know” situation?

I hang mine, just off the saddle in the garage though. But if I had to keep them in the house and they were posh I’d use one of these! http://www.m-techdesigns.com/Bike%20Wall%20brackets

Brilliant time had by all! we were in a team of 7 riding for Help the Hospice and managed to get all to the end with a bit of team spirit. Some had trained a little more than others.

Amazing fun riding through empty streets in London, we stopped at various towns and villages to say hello to friends and family and come 12-1pm the smells of bbq’s dritfing over the roads was fantastic. all in all a great atmosphere!

Only a couple of shunts that I saw and my fear of it being a shuntfest coming down Leith were unfounded, lots of sensible people either keeping out the way or letting others know they were coming through.

One irate bloke on the way up Box hill complaining at people not getting out the way but that was the only bad humourd person I head/saw. He got told to relax and get out the way of someone else ironically enough :)

Great seeing friends and Family in Westcott, on to next year!

remember, it’s not a race, it’s an experience and an unforgettable one for me! Oh and we raised a load of money too!

Sure, we ride at 6:30pm Wednesdays from Nirvana. You’re welcome to join. I rarely ride at weekends but a lot of the guys do. Google Dorking Cocks there’s a forum with details on.

Are you new to the area?

Yep, a team of 6 of us doing it for Help the Hospice. Really looking forward to it. Staying in westham Hotel for ease of getting there, only a couple of miles from the Olympic Park.

I’ve never been to the park so I’m looking forward to that, also looking forward to riding in a big group on closed roads and taking it all in. I’ve stayed away from Sportives etc on open roads, it doesn’t sit right with me.. Should be a really fun day!

By the looks of it, you leave your stuff in a numbered Prudential specific bag at the park, it then gets taken to the finish for you where you can collect it.

I like that, where Group B would be now if it had been allowed to evolve.. Just imagine a full on factory fight! Crowds would have to be behind catch fencing on every stage!

anotherdeadhero is spot on! Check out any youtube video of Vatanen for proof! He was 100% commitment in cars that had none of the technology they do now in terms of diffs, engine management, variable spool turbos or even power steering!

As with bikes, technology has made the cars easier to drive on the limit but it takes a very arguably more talented driver to extract the last second per mile because it’s not just balls it’s a multitude of skills, knowing where to back off, where to push, how to manage the aero etc etc all while going that little bit faster than was possible years ago.

    It’s all just brilliant I think :)

The split pin is removable with your fingers, I’ve been using split pins on formula fords for years to retain the pads which is a much more harsh environment.

Back to the point though :) I have tried both and can’t tell the difference in performance so will be getting SLX again.

My first 29er too. Drive needs sorting, hedge needs trimming and Ivy killing, rear tyre logos don’t line up. But it’s nice in black and white and an utter bargain!

In fact I could use the money saved to buy a hedge trimmer….

I mean the rear bolt hole would be the location for the axle. Then effectively rotate the caliper side location around to above the seat stay and the hanger to the correct place and whack a bolt through errr through and it should all fit.

It means the wheel goes back 5mm or so but that’s unavoidable.

understood. the point I am going to move the axle to is going to be at the rear bolt of the existing dropout. Then I can use a bolt through axle to secure it. This way it will eliminate any issues with forces acting on existing bolts and locations of.

I’m going to make new dropouts with a slot to accommodate the wheel (I realise I will have to slide the bolt through in and out to get the wheel in and out). To ensure the mech hanger is in the same place relative to the wheel and the caliper mount I am going to have it drawn up in CAD so that’s no worries.

Although it should be fairly simple by tracing the existing dropouts on a couple of bits of paper and moving the center points relative to each other if that makes sense?

So I’ve had an offer up of the wheel without the drop outs on and it will move up about 23mm which will only lower the bb a little but gives plenty of clearance for the wheel.

Interesting experiment and may be awful to ride but then may be just fine for what I ride.

I’m assuming head angle is a theoretical ideal given a fully extended fork? Meaning once sag is taken into account the head angle is steeper anyway?

So. If I measure the headangle with me sitting on it with a 140mm fork and associated sag and then see what the difference is with the 29er wheels and a rigid fork (With the rear wheel 23mm higher) it will be a more accurate relationship for the geometry difference.

Sorry I’m not very busy at work and may well be thinking too much with no real knowledge…

I’m going to do some working out (drawing pins and strips of card) to try and regain the head angle with different drop outs, but I’m no engineer (unless challenged in a bike shop) so might just make it fit better and not try to be too clever!

Rocket dog, funny you should say that
