I reckon you can probably find a decent room to rent in London for £650 incl. bills. Add on the local council tax (£65 to £120) and commuting. If that’s affordable, go for it.

London is ace if you have a bit of spending money. It’s crap if you’re skint and have no friends or family to help out.

I’m in London, from Sheffield via a couple of places on the continent. I’m not going to stay here forever, but I’m glad to have spent a few years here. Ignore the brexiteer Yorkshiremen, they’re wrong about this place. Mail in profile if you want some advice.

my gf and her housemate (male) are both afraid of spiders. I’m not bothered by their presence but prefer not to handle them.

She was also afraid of dogs and learnt that from her mum. The fear vanished when her mum panicked and put my gf between her and the dog… Good thing really, as I’ve got a massive dog.

OP, maybe you should enlist your missus on I’m Strictly in the Jungle Factor Get me out of here?

i once had a 24Seven DH bike, which weighed between 45 and 50lb. That was a brute.

PS. The stumpjumper bloke with the weird build. He has spent over £12000 on that…

i like that. I’ve had one of their wetsuits in the past and that was well made.

perhaps a bit late to the party, but i got the HUNT Aero Light Disc wheels a few months ago. Ridden a couple of times since and they’ve been OK. I got tubeless tyres installed by them for £99. At the time of purchase, I was very happy.

After a few months of weekend riding in/ around London, I’m not too happy with the build quality. They don’t seem particularly resilient and need to be trued again.

i’ve a set of Burton gloves, which have had regular use (over 150 full days) snowboarding in finland. They were their warmest rated gloves and finger-style. I don’t know what they’re called, but they’re leather, with a goretex membrane and cost about 140€.

A typical day there for me was -10 to -15, although i did manage -30 for 3 consecutive days in Saariselka. In both cases, the gloves were fine and dexterity was OK. The memorable problem was windchill around my head.

Kinesis crossight? Plenty are raced, they’re pretty light and not too expensive. I’ve got a sent of “posh” Hunt wheels for careful rides and a set of Hope XC tech wheels for everything else.

It also can take full guards and a rear rack

i had a 2007 Marin Quake, which i sold to a teenager on PB. It had a new zee drivetrain, lyriks, fox dhair shock, hope/ dt swiss wheels and saint brakes, with thomson finishing kit. I tried to sell it here for ages without success.

It sold on PB after a couple of weeks. I think that is where the market is, for second hand, cheaper bikes.

i need a T15,T25 and T30 set. Anything else is a bonus. Thanks for the recommendations folks.

I’ve gone for a set of Wera tools from amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E8HM9N2

They aren’t T-handle, but i like the colours and they’ll take less space in my crowded tool box.

i’ve just messaged Moose, thanks for the recommendation. I didn’t know that they existed :). Colliers wood, that is not too far! If they don’t bite, I’ll go to Soho Cycles next. It’s just a faff to get there between leaving work and them closing..

People buy me whisky because i have an extensive selection of bottles, however, i never buy whiskey and only receive it as a gift.

    I like it, but i wouldn’t mind something a bit different :D

Just remember that Brighton is the centre of the universe …

Booked airbnb accomodation in Brighton. Got a nice flat near the pier, for half the cost of a hotel. Great!

Then checked the trains, Southern are on strike… D’oh!

Thanks for all the advice folks. For those who suggested places other than Brighton (irvb…), I’ll remember those for next time :)

    Any hidden gems in Brighton?

OK, so it’s narrowed down to…
-Brighton (c. £240 on airbnb without parking)
-Hastings (c. £190 on airbnb with parking)

I know Brighton well enough and that there’s loads to do/ see. How about Hastings?

i’d prefer the solitude! The best options for brighton are with airbnb, but it’s our first trip away. Would prefer our own space

irvb, i love the rowing boat idea

mine is 140mm. Never tried the 160mm plates. I think it’s fab and wouldnt need any more for the UK. For the alps, it’s a different barrel of fish.

(PS. i’m selling my MK11 301 frame if anybody is interested)

hi shmiken, what build have you gone for, for the 4S and what’s the weight? I’m looking at one of these to replace my commuter and be used for a C2C ride next summer

i’ve had a fair few interviews which have featured questions like..
    – what is the strength of material X after several treatments?
    – how hard is material Y?
    – can you describe the differences between two alloy systems?

In the job, I would have consulted a vetted materials database of some description, not recalled from memory. I fail to understand why this isn’t done at interview!
