land rover defenders. Keep it in good nick, and make sure that you have an engine without the spider chip. Can't remember what the engine was called, but it was early 2000, easy to fix (All mechanical) and easy on the diesel too

good luck finding one like that tho, our landy was stolen and sent off to the middle east

i'm going to mention BMW racelinks again, but if you're not tempted, what about the Eric Carter designed mongoose?

    here's an example:

right then people, just ordered the lyric uturns. At £360 i know they're an absolute steal. I was stalling because domains are cheaper, and mean i won't have to be extremely frugal before the student loan comes in….

oh well, damage done now!!!! can't wait for them to arrive. Thank you all for your help, and i'll let you know how they are. I'll post up a build pic too

amen brother. The biggest change we can make is to shed our consumer society. Oh, and get some cheap, renewable energy sources to tempt china/india/africa/USA/brazil away from oil and coal. Nuclear fission?

as a country bumpkin, 4×4 are pretty essential. Further more, having a decent one with a decent engine such as the defender we have atm is worthwhile… why?

    1) used as a supply vehicle for the regular moor fires
    2) used in a logging business
    3) just about the only type of vehicle capable of launching a boat at the local 'free' slipway
    4) diff lock and good driving skills get it out of snow, to drag/ winch you environmental wallies out of snow drifts, ditches, etc so that you can get to your internet-connecting device (presumably a blackberry)
    5) it's made of scaffolding and sheet steel. Very little hydroforming operations, or niche coatings, or exotic materials here! So, manufacture is not half as environmentally harmful as your modern estates, hatchbacks, etc. It may produce more CO2/NOX/SO2 from combustion BUT simple manufacture means that less cyanates, cyanides, bromides/ bromates, lead compounds, Al- compounds and many more are released.

    How's that?

can anyone give me a lowdown on the Fury and battery frames? I see they're both 5'' FS, but when it comes to geometry, i know very little!

I'm hoping to thrash it about in the peaks and take it to the student dh champs (bucs)…

i've got a dirt cheap £4 alu jobby from LBS. Does the trick, negligible weight difference and it's reliable, lasted me a year with no slip. Why buy hope/salsa, except for the bling?

4×4 problems? Round here, theyre all pulling people out of ditches, drifts, etc. OK, the chelsea tractor lot are a pain, but don't give the Defender crew a bad rap.

saw something about a big diesel engine being more fuel efficient than a 2L petrol. That may be correct if you have decent fuel injector. For example, audi diesel engines are leagues more fuel efficient than a toyota prius, because they put some decent dielectric ceramics in. I think this is a great bit of info, great for shooting down the Prius lobby!

sure, piccie please. They seem good value atm, just a bit unkeen to spend £500 on a frame made by a small company i know little about…

but the price, god, is still berry berry good!

i have a triple to go on my steel frame, when i get it polished. I'll use it for commuting, pub trips, and LEJOG. I see the benefits of a double, but i think that the more choice the better!
