reason for wanting something to do is that we haven’t done anything particularly memorable in ages. I’d like to surprise her..

Band on the wall seems pretty certain. I’m a bit wary of clubs on weekends, the vibe isn’t so appealing. Much more alt. and friendly during the week in my experience.

The airkix place looks great, she’d love it! A bit out of my price range atm, but i’ll keep that in mind.

Any more suggestions round city centre/ oxford road would be good! Thank you for your help so far

my quake7.3 pedals pretty well for a near 7” travel bike. I take on jaunts into the peaks, whilst being knackered at the end i do a good 15-20miles on it. Couldn’t do that for many other similar bikes.

problem is though, they are bloody heavy. The good side is that they’re not so fashionable and cheap 2nd hand!

gf parents have paid for a golfing (digging in my case) weekend away with them. Hotel, food, instructor and travel all included. I can’t wait to race buggies.

gf is taking me to stockholm :)

parents paid for a set of flights

thank you drac, i haven’t got either of those here, but it seems to be similar advice to that which her family and nurse mates gave me. Unfortunately, they used finnish names, (borunna?) which may or may not be the same.

She’s back about 38*C, from nearly hitting 40*C

waiting for the punchline? It was a serious request for advice, not tomfoolery.

I’ve done some reading and asked a few nurse friends here, they say it’s best to keep her head cool and hydrated. Isotonic drinks will help maintain her electrolyte levels (failing that, some cheap pesto and olives will be OK)

Otherwise i agree, could be a very rewarding job indeed.

saint 810. Very powerful and sustained. Can be a little lacking in modulation, but that’s subjective to your previous experiences with other brakes. Easy to bleed too.

    Don’t put these on a racy XC bike as a short-term bodge tho…. :)

to a few of the replies above…. if we were a nation of chemists, engineers and IT consultants then we would not have a very rounded society. We need philosophers, linguists, historians, sports physiotherapists and beauty technicians to give us a greater level of variation.

Don’t slam these students. Support those who study to better themselves at whatever they want. Please don’t assume that all students are like the tosser who threw the extinguisher and wreak havoc.

my gf used to take lactase pills, but they make her skin very sensitive. She comes from the home of lactose-free dairy products, so if in doubt move to Finland. She has noticed that if she eats a small amount of dairy regularly, the effects aren’t as bad as if she went tee-total. So my advice, despite different problems it may not be so wise to cut dairy from your diet entirely

marin quake 7.3 (not often seen at all)
GT Hans ‘No Way’ Rey trials bike – imported from US.

and i used to have one of these when i was a kid…

…until i tried jumping it and broke it. It said on the box that it was an exercise bike suitable for 300lb fatties

hi all thanks for the advice and your experiences. It’s a difficult one this, I know he’d be disappointed if i declined it. I would like to deserve it however, and i wonder why his brother hasn’t been considered.

I’ll mention this to him, just to check status, etc. But I’ll still do it if he wants me too, it’s an honour to do it so long as it’s the best outcome for everybody involved.

met my Finnish gf whilst working in Netherlands. We moved back to our own countries and we fly to each others whenever we can. Not ideal, but i wouldn’t want to lose her.

my housemate is rounder and greasier than a ball of butter. He replied to an advert to fill a room. My other housemate who ‘approved’ him has since moved out… grr.

This guy is incredible; typical meals are 6 chicken wings, packet of sausages, bag of chips and big coffee from the same mug he’s been using for 3months. Covers the kitchen in grease, the kettle is always greasy, house stinks of meat, his room smells like it has a couple of prostitutes hidden under the floorboards and does sod all housework.

I’m looking forward to moving out too, he’s a nightmare. And depressing.

i’m looking at PhDs in Helsinki too (Otaniemi to be prescise). My gf is finnish and lives there. If you need a personal tour or introductions give me a bell. I’m looking at moving there too next summer.

Lovely people, very friendly and very proud of Finland. What field are you working/ hoping to work in?

also, another for heineken experience. Go for a walk around the dark side (leather area)… that’s certainly thought provoking. There’s a brewery bar in the red light area, at the train station end.

Mushrooms are hard to find, but i was offered enough E to last a week (shame i don’t touch that stuff). Be careful with any spacecakes, their varieties are stronger and generally served in greater quantities in ‘Dam than elsewhere in NL.

For a touch of sophistication (dutch style), and away from the tourists, visit Utrecht and ‘s Hertogenbosch (a.k.a. Den Bosch).

Hi, i can’t tell you the topic, but it’s a multi-team effort between Sheffield, two universities, a manufacturer, research centre and world class engineering firm (plenty of career prospects). I’ve decided to send applications to HKI and see whether anything comes of it too.

However, my main priority is to push for the PhD in Sheffield. Socially speaking, Sheffers is great. I’m close to family and friends, got a house sorted and my bikes are here…

But, if i ended up moving to Fin, and over the time i became single i know i’d have a lot of fun, once i got over the language barrier. ;) . There’s always a silver lining, at the risk of sounding like a douche.

I’m looking at a career in research, with the aim of travelling abroad. Hence why i’m learning a couple of european languages too. I’m taking my masters atm. It’s just a bit of a bi*&^ that i’m only a few hours away from her. Oh well, can’t have it all!

The PhD opportunity is safe to say, one of the best funded, and will give me a great chance to pick and choose who and where i work afterwards. Added to that, the research is fundamental and industrially applicable. Extremely motivating. There will be other PhD’s but none as good as this one.

I just don’t want to lose the girl, heck i know she wants to move to the UK. At the minute, i think it’ll be a case of PhD and hope she comes over to finish her thesis here. She agrees too, and is certainly more of an optimist than me.

and chvck, there are LOADS of software eng jobs in Finland. Nice place too. The Helsinki fixie crowd are great, one guy even let me ride his Brooklyn Machine Works pissed round the streets of HKI, 5mins after first meeting him.

    HansRey

haha, well going to HKI would be travelling and really broaden my horizons. She sees this as a long term thing, hence wants me to look for a new appartment with her.

And we met in Netherlands whilst working there, and since been around Germany, Belgium and ending up in Paris. Done lots of travelling.

Thing is, the KTP is the result of 2 years brown nosing,.. and the PhD is the chance of a lifetime. That is the most likely option if I can get.

More people post up! But you’re not getting pics!!!!

3 bikes at the end of my bed. There are also enough spares to rebuild a road bike… and bike bag under my bed.

2 bike frames, a dozen wheels, many tyres, tool kit and a couple of forks in my ‘walk in wardrobe’.

    joys of being a student!

i had my doubts for a long time, but i don’t think i’d upgrade my merlin malt for a long time to come.

100mm rebas, mostly lx groupset and superstar wheels got me down two DH tracks at wharnecliff and it felt fun!

I think i may sell my Quake, which cost £’000’s because the merlin is getting all the time

i have them on my 26” trials bike, xc bike and burly bike. Perfectly good tyres all year round, so i don’t have to constantly swap them and thus change how the bike feels.

If you like them, why change?
