the quake 7.3 frames are usually pretty cheap on ebay too. Low demand because it’s not so fashionable. Winwin

hehe, as for inventions… you’re also forgetting linux, anything and everything nokia and angry birds.

Sidney, have you had the tar icecream, or tar beer, it’s pretty good? The salmiakki liquor… and jalluva (sp?) are pretty rank!

    i love mine!

Climbs like a goat, and descends well. I have the 7.3 frame. It would be nice if it has iscg tabs though. My bb is quite low, since playing with the shock. It came with a fox dhx air, which i found to work when i didnt follow the recommended pressures.

My build is about 40lbs, and that was on a budget. The good thing is that it has 1.5” headtube, so you can get cheap 1.5”steerer forks.

i’ve got a gt trials bike, hence the moniker. I never really see GT bikes UK side anymore. I always liked the look of the sanction and force bikes, and the new 26” bmx-style bikes look pretty rad.

i think it may be worth switching to another FS setup, which is more readily accepted by the biking community. See dw link, etc

thank you for the tips and experiences… i’ve forwarded this onto a couple of mates starting phds soon too. Will obviously let stw how the phd/emmigration goes too

finance isn’t an issue. It’s a 4 year contract. I have to finish in 4yrs because of the awarding Uni stipulation, otherwise it’s reasonably relaxed. So, learning to use Linux… What for exactly?

CharlieMungus, i wish it was… a phd of biking in france. Lovely thought. It’s this here…

this is great, keep them coming. Good luck Kit, i hope you get the place.

The project title is still to be finalised, however I reckon we’ll start to evaluate how grain shape(s) affect impact, erosive wear and adhesive wear behaviour of thermally sprayed WC-Co and it’s derivatives. It’s reasonably researched, but it fits into VTT research and modelling work where they need models validating, and allows me to get trained up on the equipment quickly.

modelling-assisted wear and impact evaluation. I reckon it will focus on hybrid surface treatments.

thanks for the tips so far, especially to andyl. I’ve been looking at LaTeX… what do you think of this?

i’m leaving sheffield in less than 2 days. The riding is great and peaks are easy to access.

If you need to get onto the M1 easily, best go to Hillsbro or Kelham Island area. I used to live in Crookes and it’d take a fair 40mins to commute from Rotherham -> Crookes by car between 8-10 and 4-6pm. It took the same on bike w/ train, so you can see how slow traffic can be at rush hour.

I’ve driven through glossop plenty of times, it’s always a nightmare for me. Busy, cramped and narrow single roads. Much like driving in a city centre.

What about looking at Chesterfield, and south peak area? Or macclesfield?

my marin quake climbs well, however the sheer bulk of it limits any speed. I reckon something lighter with the same suspension set up should be decent.

If you want a bike that’s good up and down, what about a Remedy, or C’dale Jekyll?

the program was Heartbeat. You ate in the pub? Then i apologise, i worked there and it was pretty embarrassing (poor food, crap beer, too many managers). But, if you go to Goathland, take a 10minute walk down to Beck Hole and visit the Birch Hall Inn.

follow railway lines NW from Sandsend, or south from the Abbey in Whitby.

As for bike riding, there’s nothing that fun unless you go on footpaths. If you do that, there’s loads of choice around Goathland ;)

oops, sorry. Yep, I have the add on to save as PDF. Problem is that I have 7 seperate pdf’s which I need to stitch together to form 1 pdf.

I had an Adobe program which would do this at my old work, but I haven’t got that on my laptop.

you’d think that the average STW user would have the necessary equipment (winter tyres, insulated spds, bodywarmers, etc) for 365 days a year riding in any climate. Considering the polarised opinions and amounts spent on kit. I found that even at -20 it doesn’t feel that cold, simply because there is so little humidity. Winterbiking, even in the harshest environments isn’t so treachorous.

Plus, there’s so much grip on snowy descents due it conforming with the tyre profile. Fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun.

I think this thread should get back to topic. Quit your bickering children

hey molgrips, can you recommend any spiked tyres? Or did you have homemade jobbies?

and yeah, i do waaaay more outdoor sports in the finnish winter than i do here in UK. As pgface says, you need to mtfu

in my short time i’ve lived in UK, France and Netherlands. Travelled through Belgium and Spain and i’m now moving to Finland. Hallelujah!

As seen as i speak french with a flemish accent, Belgium would be great place to live. If i could get a grip with Finnish and Finnair wouldn’t be so damn pricey, then i’d choose Finland.

Belgium for the beer, cycling, friendly people, plurality of languages and proximity to fast transport.

Finland for the wild, beer fuelled traditions and jeckyll/hyde weather.

this reminds of an event i heard about at bolehills jumps. A big community response helped the kids get their bikes back, aren’t bikers great??!!

Only time i’ve had was i was pushing bike back whilst walking with a friend. A local paska then decided to join, and started asking how much each component was worth. He was particularly focussing on my ‘On-one reetard’ wheels, cuz theys dead wicked innit.

well, it’s damn humid in the UK too. Unless of course you solely ride in the Gobi.. Just curious, what material(s) did you use? And how did you do it?

Are you using continuous fibres or chopped mat? How did you cure it without over curing the leg already?

It sounds like such a bad idea and i can think of a dozen ways it can fail… i hope it doesn’t though.

i’m assuming this is a bodge hand layup of unidirectional CF? Is the resin stable in high humidity? Have you applied a weave to the outer layer, for impact integrity?

finally, do you have a good dentist?

    HansRey
    Full Member

i had the DMR one, but i had to bodge it to fit my frame. However, once it was on the chain was very secure.

I’ve since put on a spring loaded one with a jockey wheel-esque thing to guide the chain. It’s ok, but pretty poor at keep the chain on when coming off a kerb or at high cadence.

i wouldn’t study in the UK again. In fact, i’m not going to. It has been a good experience, but if my uni …
    1) gave a damn about students
    2) helped those who needed help
    3) knew how to teach and support
… it would have been more beneficial to me

grolsch weizen is VERY good. Award winning too… Also look at Hertog Jan, they do good beers and can get them from most supermarkets. Great for sipping on between bars. Their grand prestige is my favourite.

    and ’t IJ

    cranberry – Member
Do they do decent beers in Amsterdam?
Not intentionally, no. Holland boarders 2 of the world’s best beer brewing countries, but for it’s own beer they take their inspiration from their 3rd boarder – the north sea.

Stick to German/Irish/Belgian beer and you won’t go far wrong

    Cranberry, that is absolute rubbish.

np, for B. ‘t IJ, might be an idea to get a taxi or something. It’s easily within walking distance, although it took us about 30-40mins whilst high to find it.

    HansRey

Brouwerij ‘t IJ do great beers in ‘dam. Look out for a windmill near the centre. There’s another brewery too very close to the redlight district (the end near the IJ).

Don’t forget La Trappe too. Obviously german and belgian beers are very popular in NL.

before going to NL for 4 months last year, I had been single only 7months since being 18. I really enjoyed it but I realised that I’m happier when I’m not single.

I do miss racing and biking, and staying out as late as I want to.
