Various bikes had a Talas shock – on the fly adjustable travel. Trek Liquid was the most common I think but I have a Titus Switchblade with one. 8)

Yep, agreed. Had probably best night ride ever this evening – Trendlebere Down – Houndtor – Water – Lustleigh Cleave. Dust in October!

I spent my formative years in a place called Upper Cound – which caused great hilarity among a certain type when I was asked where I came from.

Two more: Jolly's Bottom and Green Bottom – just outside Truro

The freehub on my Racelites comes off easily enough provided you can lock the spindle. I usually put two cone nuts on the non-drive side and tighten them together. Then just undo the nut holding the freehub and slide it off rotating slightly with the pawls.

The part that tends to get knackered is the freehub roller race which sits against the wheel hub, where the rollers corrode quite easily and run in a nylon or some plastic cage.

As for distance used to shoot out to 90m's with no problems getting 5/6 out 6 arrows in the 9/10 rings.

Mate, if you could score like that you'd be GMB, not 1st Class!

Still got my Hoyt, carbon limbs and Easton ACEs under the bed – but it's just a bit dull compared with mountain bikes. Field archery is definitely the way to go compared with target – a bit like MTBs as opposed to roadie maybe?

Yep, I'm going. Just trying to decide which bike to take – elderly full-suss or elderly race hardtail. Will prob go for the bounce.
Had some rain yesterday but not enough to do any damage and the moor was dusty last weekend!

I used to get this on the rear wheel with an ancient Panaracer Smoke – it too was a floppy fit and I was running it pretty low pressure. Seemed to stop when I upped the pressure and I've never had the problem on newer tyres.

My race hardtail is a Saracen – magnesium frame weighing 3.1lbs. Very nice ride.
    Think I'm gonna join.

Yes the concrete will go off fine in a bucket or bag or whatever. It's a chemical reaction (that requires water) not a drying process.

I seem to remember the Collingwood as being alright – when are you talking about? – I was drinking in Newcastle in the early/mid eighties.

The Broken Doll opposite the station used to be a bit heavy duty though.

I have a similar issue – order despatched 18 Aug and nowt arrived. Contacted shop this week and they have resent the order. (Thankyou Leisure Lakes. Hoping it's at home tonight).

Not really ever been into 'puter games but I really liked European Air War – more of a sim than a game. Unfortunately the Dell we've got now won't play it though.
Don't think I've played five games other than Space Invaders and Pacman.

Fair enough if Sheldon says it, but I have a frame with tight clearance for 2.25s and it only starts to rub if I put higher pressures in. I can't really see how a tyre is going to be deformed that far round the wheel as a result of cornering roll.

Hey whippersnapper, I did the cartridge thing as a kid – made walks with my parents a bit more interesting. Boxes of them still in their loft I think.
    Mind you, I didn't catalogue them…

Low pressure doesn't make any difference – the tyre only goes fatter where it's touching the ground. If you run high pressures then your more likely to have a problem if the clearance is marginal.
I don't think I've ever had a bike where I could get a finger between tyre and frame. Maybe I've got fat fingers.

Royce bbs are easy to get hold of – from Royce.
TA are still available – but seem to have a poor rep for off road use, although I've never used one.
SKF are supposed to be good and may be home serviceable. Middleburn now do a full range.

got flats and bar ends on mine and really like it – but I fancy trying drops too. I find the flats with quite long bar ends excellent for commuting – but I won't start that debate again…

Condition and period to next rethatch is key. You might want to get a thatcher out to give you a professional opinion. Rethatching is expensive, particularly if it's a big roof, and you need to chisel the house price on that basis if necessary.
Is it listed? If it is, and it's currently thatched with longstraw wheat then the planning authority may insist it is rethatched with the same material. Longstraw tends not to last as long as water reed. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that there will thatching grants available these days.
There is no reason in principle not to have a modern woodburner if you want one – but you must get a proper flue liner at the same time that will insulate the old chimney lining from the liner. If a woodburner is fitted already this needs checking – plus regular sweeping is needed.
Buildings/contents insurance is slightly higher bit not much – if you go to an insurer that knows about thatch. NFU Mutual seem to be OK. I'd say their costs are within the margin of variation of insuring a normal house.
As noted above, loft areas are not so good for storage as they tend to get dusty.
Thatch is great thermal and noise insulation.
Dripping off the eaves can be annoying as it goes on for ever after rain, and there aren't usually any gutters.
But – it looks great and you can get good value because of the numbers of people who talk complete rubbish about the disadvantages.
Potentially more of an issue if it's thatched are things like damp if it's an old property – e.g. cob.
    I like thatch!

Ref spares I normally fanny around putting virtually everything from the shed into the car and then use none of it – but it’s good for confidence.

Hardtail is completely adequate for Newnham – but I take my full-suss as a spare just in case. (see above).

Take plenty of bottled water or a big container you can fill up and loads of easily digestible food you can snack at. Second the chair comment.

Make sure you take warm clothing for the night time bit ‘cos it can get flippin’ freezing when you’re off the bike. Like the comments above, take as much riding clothing as possible – it’s nice to be able to put dry shorts and jersey on for your lap if possible.

The main thing is to make sure you’re at the changeover when your buddy comes in from his lap – and have a good time – it’s a pretty laid back event.

Doing the pairs 12 hour race this year.

I got some BBB ones with ceramic bearings, for XTR, they do SRAM XO too. I’ve only used them for a few weeks but they seem well put together – £14 IIRC.

Yep, Lymes has cropped up a few times in my neck of the woods near Cheriton Bishop NE of Dartmoor. Is likely to become more common if global warming continues.

NB, went for long ride on Qs last weekend with two mates, all of us in shorts. One guy found 13 ticks when he got home and the other two of us had none – so it does depend on how you taste I guess.

Royce are very much still around. RS8s on a Royce bb here.

Someone on here recently suggested that Middleburn were now doing SKF bbs, and that they even had a square taper one. I have no idea if that is true but might be worth a call to Middleburn.

I use the corner support pole of an early 1990s Ikea shelving unit which makes an excellent slide hammer for fitting crown races.

Eastbridge is very quiet – not too far from Southwold – very nice walks from the camp site to Minsmere bird reserve – plus you can cycle to the reserve off road. And there’s a pub.

Are you 100% sure the races are in the right way up/correct for top and bottom? With cartridges you probably can’t do it wrong but I contrived to fit one race the wrong way round on a WTB greaseguard headset and had exactly the same symptoms as you describe.

My 2003 Titus full suss is going strong. FSR suspension that isn’t obsolete and the frame is superbly made and finished. The only thing I don’t like about is the interrupted seat post design which makes it look like an old Spesh FSR. As I can’t afford to replace it I expect it to carry on for a few years yet.

The really old Airforce 1s with the bolt up crown are 63mm. The later hollowform ones are 70mm I think, or 100mm for the LT version as stated.

I’ve got some LT ones which are great. I had some of the Airforce 1s and they were flexy as hell. If you’ve got those make sure you have the ‘race collar’ which goes under the crown race.

I bought a seat post off them. Nicely made and lovely welds – but bear in mind you get a matt Ti finish and not the shiny they show in the ads.

If you want a Ti 31.6 seat post I’ve got one to sell, as I realised I need a lay back one – when I fitted it….
