I have avid elixer 5 brakes and recently made the mistake of buying pads for the elixer c / CD, which didnt fit mine (slightly too big). It makes me slightly nervous now when i see pads advertised for the ‘elixer’ without giving any info about which model.

Also, i have had a few cheaper sets of pads and they really havent lasted anything like as long as the originals. I’ve just bitten the bullet and bought pukka avid ones although at £18 each they are a bit pricey!!

From my recent experience as well, its been the quality of the metal bracket that holds them all together that has been most susceptable to breaking up.

Sorry, slight bit of mis-information by me! Yes, the pedals themselves spin quite freely, its the cranks as a whole that are stick fast.

I noticed on one occassion this morning that the chain seemed to have pulled up and the description of chainsuck described above does seem to fit the bill.

I have cleaned the bike quite throughly over the last few weeks so im not sure that it is necessarily a dirt issue although it definately happens more once it becomes caked in mud etc on a ride out.

I have the Edge 800 which is very good but does take quite a bit of getting used to. Its not intuitive at all and i have had a few gripes along the way – one of them being that for the money I had expected the accuracy to be a bit better. But i havent had one before so i was learning from scratch and i had nothing to compare it to.

I have had it for about 9 months now and use it regularly.

I’m guessing that you are 38. I felt like that at 38… 8O

No, before that there was a fairly flat section of trail (not much in the way of trees etc in the valley bottom). The trail split with the left hand trail going off over some rocks) whilst the left hand one being flat – this seemed to be the line that everyone took.

Have to say that as someone that was at the back pretty much all the way, there was no tape across the trail even on lap 1. 3 times i wondered to myself, why the course hadnt been set to ride over the rocky section…

and then marshalling up next to the footbridge over the motorway.

haha was it you marshalling the bridge when the fella slipped past you on lap 1 and followed some random bikers over the bridge?

Bet he still finished ahead of me!

I’m sure WCA mentioned that he organised an event but I didn’t quite catch the name of it

If WCA is the guy that i meandered across the field of despair chatting to, then i think its called the ‘Big Bike Bash’ and its held down in the New Forest. I dont have any other info though!

I was nr 218 and came 220th. Pretty impressive! presuming the aim of course was to carefully judge your final position against the randomly allocated number handed out before the start…? :D

No, didnt cut the corner!! Just a lack of consistency on the GPS!

The first lap was 4.3 miles and it was just over 4.1 miles on the subsequent laps…

Could i just add my own thanks to the organisers, marshalls and everyone else associated with the whole day! It was a smashing event, my first ever entry into the world of organised events and its something i wont forget!

Cyclists seem to get a lot of bad press (mainly by car drivers) about attitude etc but everyone was very courteous as they passed me, thanking me for getting out of their way! I received around 300 “thanks mate” and that was by the end of my first lap 8O

I was also pretty impressed with the amount of varied single track in Philips Park. We had ventured there a few weeks ago to have a look and hadn’t seen a fraction of the trails available. Will definately return to Philips Park and Hit the North!

Below is a map of the course – i didn’t bother adding the details of my recorded ride for fear of embarrassment!!!

Take a bottle unless you have a pit bitch to hand you one.

My missus is coming down but i fear that i may have to sell it a little better to her to get her to help me! :D

Yes, agree with Mr Sparkle – many thanks to the organisers…!

Quick question – this is my first event of this or any other type – will i need to carry drinks bottles with me or will there be some sort of drinks points en route?

300th place is 299th loser. I’m aiming high!

Think i may be competing with you binners! Is the nr 1 loser a better accolade than the 299th loser…?!

the ground is gonna be rock solid tomorrow! fast and grippy!!!

I’m not so sure! I think there will be a cold crust on top of a foot of swamp… and then as said above, 300 people will soon make short work of that!

@kingkongsfinger – we did that ride a few weeks ago:

    http://www.wittonweavers.co.uk/?p=1973

Allow plenty of time for it, it was quiteslow going. Oh, and ignore all my blurb about being out of shape – im now in peak physical condition… ahem!

Im also Bromley Cross and i’m claiming the witton weavers way and the roller coaster around Turton & Entwistle reservoir as mine!

Anyway Lowey, i hope the guy that started the thread is good on 2 wheels or he may have preferred to carry on up Coal Pit, follow the path around the farm at the end and then go up the mast road! The old tramway that you sent him up will set him up nicely for coming down San Marino!

Have to say that it took me quite a while to get to grips with the 800 – i dont think its all that intuitive and the help guides are none existant. As above though, upload all your info through Garmin Connect direct from the unit.

If you wish to see the route on Basecamp then its a bit more of a faff. I think the easiest way is to import the file off the unit into Training Centre and then save as a GPX. Then open in Basecamp.

Oh, and check the garmin forums – almost everyone else has had to go through the learning process so chances are your question has been asked and answered numerous times!

    Hope that helps!

    That description fitted the bill…

I was looking at the backward spelling trying to come up with an anagram but my eyes could only see raped to death.

This will be my first event and i have been looking forward to it immensely. On Sunday a few of us rode down from north Bolton and had a look around the place.

    Wish we hadn’t!!!

I have no idea where the field of dispair is, or Tons descent or any other named feature. All i know is that we went around some parts that feature on the video. We also crossed a field… Whether it was field of despair 1 or field of despair 2 i cannot say, but the title seems most accurate!

They do price match but its worth noting that they have recently changed their policy so that they only match online cycle shops. Might sound obvious but they used to price match against Decathlon but dont anymore. I know that because i was after a GoPro HD camera which was quite a bit cheaper at Decathlon and they werent interested…
