+ 1 for the Montane Featherlite. Use if for both cycling and running; very seldom leave home without it!

Fitted SKS Chromoplastic full length guards to my CX.  Used zip ties to fix to seat stays and also at bottom bracket. although there was some judicious trimming of the mudguard to make them fit.

Go for a wider fitting as you can get away with. I think mine are about 40mm wide on a 32mm tyre on a Whyte Saxon Cross.

Definitely worth the effort to get them fitted.

I suffered from Dupuytren’s contracture for a number of years. I eventually presented to my GP when it got to the stage that I could no longer place my palm flat on the floor to do a press up. It was also getting difficult putting gloves on, putting my hands in my pockets (especially jeans) and was beginning to impede manual dexterity.

I had a full thickness fasciectomy last September. I was off work for four days, off the bike for six weeks (but back running within a couple of weeks of the op).

It’s a relatively minor procedure, although the condition is likely to reoccur and further intervention may be necessary at some stage.

For me, it was well worth it. My finger is perfectly straight now and I don’t think I realised how much it was inconveniencing me.

Perfectly acceptable practice in our offices. Quite a few like me either cycle or run to work, so no chance of breakfast at home. Others have been to the gym or just pick something up en-route and then we have a sandwich van that comes round so there’s always folk buying breakfast from that.

Can’t really see what the problem is. Is it any different to eating your lunch at your desk

    +1 for the Osprey Escapist.

Also have a Talon 33 which is excellent for walking/climbing but, imho, definitely no a bike pack whereas the Escapist most deffo is.

Paper map all the time here. OS Getamap – A3 print out at 1:50,000

Just can’t route plan or navigate tin the wider context off a small screen.

Also use a Garmin Edge 800 to capture ride data and as a “get out of jail free card”, but never navigate with it. Even if I was doing,I’d still carry a paper map as back up

    Is this what you want?

    http://dirtfactory.org/

and then we’ll follow other outdoor sports that have gone indoors and we’ll soon have a generation of mountain bikers who have never ridden outdoors just like we have people who:

Climb on climbing walls who think that they go rock climbing yet have never been to a crag.

Paddle at a white water centre who have never run a river.

Ski or board at a Snowdome but have never seen proper snow.

Ice climb at the Ice Factor and think they’re winter climbing.

…each to their own I guess, but isn’t getting wet and muddy part of the attraction?

Next someone will tell me that they’ve seen the first Easter Eggs!

With a lot less idle time in the potential new position, you might end up with less free time, rather than more.

…and you could find yourself having to work those extra two hours anyway to keep on top of the extra first and second line management responsibilities

Like lots have already side night riding is a fantastic experience.

Certainly agree with the comments about starting off somewhere familiar.

It might be also worthwhile agreeing with your mates that when off road to ride with a bit more of a gap than usual to avoid riding in the shadow of the light behind. It’s a bit of a personal thing, but I also prefer rear reds to be off when off road.

    + 1 for Harveys

Yorkshire puds have been around since time immemorial. Growing up in Yorkshire in the 70’s we used to have Yorkshire pud and gravy as a “starter” to fill us up before the meat got served!

By ‘eck, times were ‘ard then!

Looks like more Artisan shite of tarting up basic foods and making them trendy/expensive! Reminds me that I read an article in one of he weekend paper food supplements recently about how salted fish has become trendy/expensive when it’s origins came from it being a cheap way of preserving fish for the Catholic masses to eat on Fridays.

Best thing to do is find a shop that sells a good range and try as many pairs as poss on. After years and years of wearing Shimano I recently bought a pair of Bontrager Katans which I’m really pleased with.

Highly recommend getting a pair with the option of fitting studs.

Do those Dynaracer type things leave the metal spike inside of the tyre after? If so can they be reused? Are you then committed to buying their dedicated strings for it?

Yep, the metal spike gets left in the tyre and you do have to buy their dedicated strings.

The big plus side for me is that it’s all preloaded with no faffing around. When it’s cold and wet and getting dark this simplicity wins hands down for me.

I like rain more than I like sun.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one! I always enjoy rides/runs/walks in bad weather. Okay, sometimes in a grade 2 fun kind of way, but it always seems a more gritty ethereal experience. And this

you have to take every opportunity to get out, don’t you, despite the weather?

I know exactly where you’re coming from having been there myself and currently coaching the missus through a similar stage.

It’s a combination of many of the things above – better sleep, resting properly between exercise, improving diet, less alcohol etc, but I think one of the most important is being kind to yourself and don’t expect too much, too soon.

It will take time, but set yourself a series of small, achievable goals. No matter how small, when you achieve them give yourself a pat on the back or a small reward/treat. Also, don’t be afraid to say “no” to other people when they’re asking for your time or putting demands on you.

There’s no one size fits all solution, but the fact that you’ve recognised it and want to change things is a good place to start. Good luck!

LOL … you’ve been round mine then!!

Despite a weeks holiday in Malta, four days at a Festival and a week’s D of E training so far these holidays it’s still BORING!

Not as boring as the puerile drivel going her social media though!!

Been happily using Scottoiler UBS (now rebranded Guard) to good effect in all seasons. It’s especially good in winter for easy maintenance on the commuter, although when my 5 litre bottle runs out I think I’m going to give Putoline a go

what are those norwegian(?) string vest alikes called? as a sweaty bastard quite tempted to try one of those this winter. I’m done with cold, clammy merino.

Absolutely brilliant. See “3. Ultimate Comfort base” in the article linked below:

I think it is illegal to intercept third party’s calls without their consent

Absolutely correct …section 71 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, but recording a conversation isn’t the same as intercept.

    Minor legal technicality I know!

Meant to have included this link:

    https://www.gore-tex.com/support/restoring-water-repellency

of if a company like Musto wanted to use goretex they had to send their products off to gore to be tested and certified

Yes, from what I remember from working in the Outdoor Industry there were quite rigorous licencing agreements between Gore and Manufacturers who used their fabrics.

    Aspirin (for heart attacks)
    Strong painkillers (paracetemol & codeine)
Sugar in some form for diabetic hypos

    Cheers buddy

Pretty much what I carry plus Imodium, anti-histamines and rehydration salts. (all depending on the length of the ride)

I think epipens, inhalers,GTN sprays etc come into the “personal meds” category and if leading a group would expect them to bring their own/declare their condition at the beginning of the ride

Turn up at a place and time arranged without any phone calls from mobile phones.

Funnily enough was talking about this last night to 17 yo daughter. My first climbing trip to the Alps with friends from uni was organised by nothing more than “meet you in the Bar National sometime on June xxth”, whereas she can’t meet her friends at Costa without twenty million phone calls, texts, snapchats, instagrams etc.

Okay, twenty million, I exaggerate! but you get the picture

Time for a thread on Office Etiquette?
