What sort of budget would such a tandem require?

The Sudeten Mountains (either in Polaand or Czech Republic). Rode there till I was 21, great variety and not too many people around.

EC90, so much nicer than Thomson. In my opinion, obviously.

If you want to be sad – scotch.
If you want to be happy – Jack Daniels.
If you want to forget – Jagermeister.
The loss is going to hurt badly whatever you drink, I would be careful.

I’m thinking the 456SS with rigids and fat tyres should suffice. With a bit of luck I’ll have a SS frame by then so a rigid SS would be great (could blame the bike instead of my fitness ;-) ).
It’s 5 Euro for parking, I’ve checked it. No need for showers, the missus knows I will’ve been biking before collecting her and understands the “dirty but happy” phrase better than most wives.

    Let’s see:
    – it’s sunny,
    – it’s warm,
    – it’s dry,
    – wife away for almost 2 weeks,
    – bikes, motorbike, cars await,
    – coffee aplenty,
    – lovely chicken wings ready,
    – no work till 6pm,
    – good clients this week (little work for good money).
    Yeah, I bloody love Mondays!

Perhaps my not being British makes me understand the word “great” somewhat differently to you. Each to their own, I suppose :-D
They’re dog ugly in most cases on those pictures but they might be night club girl-like (once you hop on you don’t notice the looks).

TJ, as much as I can judge having spent some 21 years there it wasn’t a communist state. Totalitarian? Are we talking about the same place? You sure we are?
A head of the ruling party running the country, formal opposition in existence (as of 1952 IIRC), moral opposition in the form of the catholic Church (given, not as free as elsewhere but nonetheless). Kind of similar to the UK at present, don’t you think?
In communist there is NO PRIVATE ownership of goods, NO PRIVATE land, NO PRIVATE business. We did have it, not everywhere and not all the time, but we did. Propaganda clearly did its job.

If it weren’t for the labels, TB and DC would be confused for their politics. At least they continue their politics, Brown was worse as he didn’t have his own ideas.

Come to Ireland, we’re having November weather at the moment so it might actually be nice and warm then. And the beaches are empty most of the time anyway (too few people live here to crowd them). You can even drive on some (see Bettystown in co. Meath).

Just in case you thought a properly left-wing government was better – “Animal Farm” perhaps?
To put a different spin on things:
When I lived in socialist Poland (there was no communism country save for USSR and Albania in Europe) everybody thought capitalism was perfect. Now they have it and they don’t.
Now I live in capitalist West where people think socialism (a massively different system to communism) is perfect.
Grass is always greener across the pond, lads. As long as humans govern humans there’ll be no perfection. There can’t be, as we are naive, gullible, greedy, selfish, ignorant, foolish etc. Not necessarily all of those at the same time for everybody, think the general public.
Is there a solution? Possibly, maybe if a John Smith involved himself in his local community, if a Jane Brown put her effort into general things instead of gossip, maybe… And who knows, perhaps TJ’s government would be great. Worth a try?
Hell, what do I know, huh? I always rated Maggi ;-)

Right, go and vote next time, make sure everybody does, you might win (whatever hell that’ll mean).
BTW Would TJ-like lefties be better?

I rode a tandem with a mate across Poland some 18 years ago. Whoever was at the back had the rucksack on (it was such a type that its support was made of alu poles and it sort of stood on the rack and was only supported by the stalker’s straps. We covered a few thousand kms over 5 weeks, road and off-road, through forests and urban jungle of Warsaw. Bloody good laugh. Moreover, it was made of steel, had a pedal-back brake and two a-type brakes. Singlespeed too, understandably. When we snapped it on the welds due to the corner we took being too tight and causing us to crash into some shrubs, a local lad with welding equipment put it back together.
The tandem is still in use, my 2nd cousin uses it with her husband. It’s some 35+ years old and shows no sign of willing to retire.

Is there anything Tories can do that you lot would be pleased with? Labour – no, Torries – no, Lib-Dem – no. Maybe you should start STW Party and take the country over?

I’ll be able to tell you next week when I get caustic soda onto it. Should take a couple of mins (it took seconds with Hone cranks).

mr chested, i thank you kindly many thousand camels for your offer but i think mrsconsequence will be anti 406 due to the size, she’s a firm believer in wimmin should only be allowed small cars as they’re rubbish with spacial awareness

cheers again for the advice everyone!
Phil, no worries, I’m a married man too :-D
TBH Years ago myself and a mate were using an old Pug 205 1.9 diesel to shift bikes. If I had a wife who understands I need another one I’d be thinking of the one above. As things stand I have a Punto (being fixed as it wasn’t serviced for a bit before I got it) for the missus and I’ll be getting a 206 1.4HDi from England. Cheap as chips for a very decent car (from 1200 quid AFAIK). If I were driving fewer miles (and I do some 600+ mpw) I’d consider a petrol version. Or maybe a Punto Sporting/GT. Seriously.

Sam, is there a frame suitable for a 5’7″ shortie? Just curious at present but as the future seems much brighter than ever before… I have the vast majority of bits (wheels, brakes, chainset etc) so it’s just a frame I would be looking for (hypothetical only at present).

My mate has them on his Avensis (2001, 1.6l) and likes them. He doesn’t drive that much, maybe 40 miles per day, or aggressively but reckons he’d have them if he were to clock up many more miles.
