If the population doubles then i think there is a little more we need to do than "a bit of planning"

With the current population they are currently predicting a food crisis in the next 60 years. Thats without adding any more.

We need to concentrate more on our over-dependence on meat, our poor farming practices and how we can be more sustainable and stop the desertification of our farmland. And don't get me started on fishing stocks!!

10.5 billion is still a lot of people!

What is it today? 6.5 billion people?

I also saw an article which had a UN high prediction of 14.5 billion by 2100

That is a lot more mouths to feed.

Re population – why would you think that past growth will continue into the future?

Why would you think it wouldn't?

It was an extreme example but if say population only doubled in the next 400 years, thats still double the people as of today to feed. And if they all want steak for dinner every night, thats a lot of cows!!

It will be a busy little planet in 400 years time, world population has quadrupled in last 100 years, by my estimates thats over 400billion people!!

    I know, i know, a little inconceivable!

    You give us that long?

    Optimistically – 400 – 500 years tops.

Hainey if we are not altering the natural cycles what difference does it make it we reduce our emmissions ?

    Good question!!

OMG the thread rises once again, along with Junkyards ability to mis-read / twist what anyone says! Bravo!!

As said on the other thread I don't think anyone denies that it is not acceptable or sustainable the rate that we are using up the natural resources on our planet. I also don't think you will find anyone who doesn't think that cutting emissions has to be a good thing, and that it is everyone's personal responsibility to do so. I think we are all agreed on that.

I think the biggest differences are between those who think that we can alter the natural cycles of the earth and those who don't and what that means in the short term we should be concentrating our efforts on.

Personally I think that the growing energy and food shortages is a far more important issue to deal with.

I am sure you would not want to be accused of using selective data.

As proven before you can use selective data to prove anything you want to. What makes you think that selectively looking at the last 400 years is better than the last 500,000? In the grand schemes of this planet 400 years is a blink of the eye.

Given this could you explain why you are uncertain about what is/will happen?

I am not certain about anything. I didn't say that. Just like you can not be certain about what could/couldn't happen.

Anyway, i don't think we should get into the debate again, i think after several hundred responses last time we agreed to disagree. 😉

I was referring to a much longer time scale than decades – geological time. Hence my caveat about rate of change being the issue and not "climate change" as such.

Yes, as stated there have been numerous times in the history of our planet where we have seen high levels of CO2 accompanied by global temperature rises. The question is whether the additional CO2 being pumped into the environment is having an additional effect.

There are some interesting articles by Freeman Dyson out there on Climate change and the reliability of the models used to predict it.

Climate science is a very primitive science. We know some things, but we don’t know most of the needed facts. Today, this system can only be evaluated empirically because it is not yet understood and as such conclusive evidence is not there. There is still a long long way to go before we know how or if are influencing the planet.

As said further up the post, the main thing we should be concentrating on is the use of the earths natural resources, something we can make a difference about.

There's not really many good books out there which provide good scientific basis for or against global warming. Just hypotheses from both camps.

Marko I feel sorry for you mate, Les Arcs has pretty much some of the best riding in the alps. Knocks spots off Les Gets, Morzine, Alpe D'Huez and Les Deux Alpes.

You've missed some phenomenal riding if all you found was fireroads. Even the resort map has some of the popular singletrack routes on it.

As for a Hardtails, well hardtails aren't for me, but I know plenty of people who ride just as quickly and have as much fun on a hardtail out there.

You are making some HUGE sweeping generalisations with all this

This was done a few months back and I haven't read all the posts but I think like most if the dog is under control and poses no threat to the enjoyment of others riding then its a good thing.

I take my lab to trail centres all the time, mainly mid-week though as trail centres are horrible places to be at weekends anyway!!! 😉

He's good, always stays out of the way, comes when told and its a great workout for him. Just an extra water bottle in the camelbak to give him half way round and thats about it.

    Good times.

I particularly enjoyed the completely absurd post about how experienced motorbikers can ride faster and still be safer! Darwinism at its best there.

If you have to spend the night, get sh*tfaced and pretend to be somewhere else.

    Beirut, Kabul, Baghdad.

As above, its a sh*thole of a place itself but within 20mins drive there is some great riding spots. If you don't want to be taking apart trouser presses all week take your bike.

kona bunny we have all been there I spent 15 pages arguing about global warming with someone who could not even count to ten accurately and posted up Sarah Palin whilst I used science and published reports

LOL, still living in a dream world I see.

I would definitly recommend getting a guide. Some of the trails you will be able to find, but most of the better stuff is off the beaten track and relatively unused and hard to find. A guide will really help you get the best of the area. Enjoy, its a great area.

Unscrew the PCB control board and look for blackened junctions around any of the solder joints. This happened to mine with the same issues and i just re-soldered it and it worked a treat.

This, thankfully, is a rare occurance and to be able to predict, legislate, and protect against this kind of pre-meditated hatred is nigh on impossible.

have lived in communities where there were guns in almost every household and yet there was no gun crime. It's nothing to do with the gun, and everything to do with the person with the gun.

    +1 for this.

Mentally unhinged / people pushed to the edge / criminals will always find a way to carry out their plans.

think hainey merely improves my point. 50 overweight and 'extreme' sweaty mountainbikers oggling over one frumpy tart isnt my idea of an awesome night out

Quite the opposite to the norm described above actually. The bar we stumbled upon had 2 intoxicated old men asleep in the corner and 6 of us. That was it. Oh plus the 2 strippers! Keeping that one a secret though!
