My youngest has had all her big sisters bikes waiting for her to grow into since birth. She’ll then have mine (if she still likes bikes by teen/adulthood).
None of them are Large as I’m only 5’11”.
She’s learning to ride properly (BMX) so won’t ever need the stupidly long bikes that are in fashion at the moment.

Why not buy your son a frame that fits him and transfer all the parts from the “really nice” but far too big bike for him?
Second hand 26″ frames is a buyers market

    Just like all fashion.

    0% James as I don’t race.
But running far too soft a fork means it can’t be pushed hard. Hardly ideal if you do.

Preload almost means ride height adjuster in reality. If a coil spring is too soft there is only one way to sort it. Unless you do just want a little more ride height?

No. Requiring preload almost always means you’ve chosen the wrong spring rate.
The only way to sort that is to change to the correct rate spring.
Funnily enough. this will sort the ride height out.

My advice on YOUR suspension has always been a step ahead of your buying impulsiveness Mark.
    It’s gearing I struggle with. 😉

    You probably don’t.

This place is full of folk who crave long bikes because it’s fashionable to. Their recomendations would be too long for me too.
and I don’t have short arms either.

You just don’t like fashionably long bikes.

    Pre-load?

Really? Just get the right spring.

or maybe you could convert them to air. use a slightly higher pressure than you did before and don’t use any of those silly tokens that make air forks more progressive. 😉

What makes you think I ride Bridleways?

    phew…

Start somewhere around 20-25% sag. if you’re finding them too firm/not firm enough. (using too much/not enough travel) try a little more/less until you find your preference.
A basic guide for doing it at home:
While standing on the pedals. weight forwards biased roll along at walking pace. grab a handful of front brake while pushing down to the floor on the bars ar hard as you can. This will give you an idea of how stiff they are set up. You don’t want to be able to botto them doing this but you do want the to use ost of their travel (depending on how strong you are).
this should be a good starting point.
fine tune a little througout the first few rides.

    18-40% depending on bridleway use.
apparently the longer and duller the bridleway the softer you need them

a retired* FIA Rally suspension technician told me so

*I think that’s how you spell it 😉

Motorcycle bar end extensions work. You might not like the idea, They’re designed to add weight rather than save it.
I’ve used them successfully with Alu DH bars and lock on grips fitted over them.
They bar end inserts in each end of your bars adding about 20mm and you tighten an expander to hold them in place.

    From DRUGS.COM

“As a rough guide: if you smoke the occasional joint, weed will stay in your system for up to 10 days. If you smoke regularly, up to 45 days and if you smoke constantly, 90 days.

As for being detectable in a drug test, well this depends on the type of drug test. A Urine test will detect up to a month prior, but a blood test will show positive if you’ve smoked any weed in the last 6 months.

Also important to note that marijuana/thc residue is stored in the fat cells, so if you’re skinny or have a high metabolism, the time it takes to leave your system may be reduced.”

his height points him to 26″ wheel though.
surprised the “industry” haven’t marketed this new junior wheelsize… yet. 😉

Yeah. They shouldn’t make 27.5″ wheeled “junior” bikes

actually… Commencal should probably just give up making bikes completely.

Either of you two want some 3/4 humvees (XL) cheap? £20?
Got a pair here after listening to others say to size up. I’m an (L) in every other pair of riding trousers/shorts. These’re far too big.

haha… hardly a great sales technique but I have to agree with Submarined on the cut. 😀

no need to tumble dry bike kit it’s all quick drying.
Same as Submarined says above. Hose off then quick 30deg wash cycle with fast spin (incl. shoes). stuff comes out practically dry. I just hang my bike kit up on coathangers on the curtain rail in a south facing bedroom window and the sun dries it within an hour. (or above a radiator if for some strange reason it isn’t sunny)
wet shoes dry in the boiler cupboard.

Sounds like you didn’t even wring yours out. Are you a student who’s just left home or something? 😛

    Ask him which he prefers.

FWIW I’m 10cm taller than you and only happy on mountain bikes with 26″ and a short reach by todays standards (400mm to 425mm). I like all my bikes to ride like little dirtjumepers though. haven’t owned longer than a 55mm stem in over 20 years and back then it was only because I didn’t know any better.

sorry. my point is. depending on how his riding comes along. He may never outgrow the 26″ Whyte

The commencal seems very very (like far too) short for a 27.5″ wheeled bicycle. got a link to the full bike geometry?

What is it you find too exciting about it?

make doping in sport a criminal offence in the way that it is in France. I can’t see any practical reason why it shouldn’t be so

Other than the people in charge of chosing which “drugz” are on the banned substance list being stupid. no. no reason at all.

@docgeoffyjones – was replying to Alpin’s theory that THC lowers risk adversion. (I don’t think it does). THC does reduce cognitive functioning though.

Doping in sport has been done to death. Surely we’d all rather hear some of Alpin’s drug fueled risk taking stories.

A winning DH run is more about precision than risk.
and more about skill than strength.

Can’t say THC has ever made me take a risk I wouldn’t have straight. unless you count scoffing something out of date from the fridge.

Reach is perfect. when standing (which is all that matters)
it’s longer than my BMX, shorter than my 170mm travel mtb

longer reach would be stupid on a bike you want to ride like this. If you’re used to a longer bike while climbing seated. just bend yer elbows. 😉

I also have a 250mm drop dropper post on order.
