fair enough! it’s only really when you lean the bike right over or ride a fairly extreme camber you’d fold it.

Fancy a sedate old aged alchy evening ride and beer tomorrow night? Young Mike might be up for it.

Anything over 15psi felt too firm!

surprised you don’t fold them in corners even at your svelte weight.

Start exactly the same thread on the car forum 😉

    What do you weigh mboy?

That’s not really Cesar’s angle.. he’s an engineer who can actually ride a bike not some **** in a ‘shed’ simply jumping on the latest trend.

    35mm isnt’ ultra short.
And a short stem doesn’t require a slack H/A to work well at all.
I’ve been running a 40mm stem on my hardtail for years. It has a 69deg H/A and relitively short TT (22″ and I’m 5’11”)

It’s having too long a top tube that requires the slacker H/A

what does being tall have to do with it?

Average height (5’11”) here and no 125mm drop is not enough.
I normally run my 410mm seatpost at two heights – 310mm exposed for climbing and 140mm for everything else (except jumping where I’d slam it completely).

The new internal routed reverb is 150mm, give it a couple of years and we’ll have a useable range and more reliable droppers, who knows maybe eventually we’ll even have ones that hold a saddle without rotation.

Have a go riding a descent

it’s not simply about descending tho, it’s about getting the saddle out the way allowing you room to move around and control the bike better.

    Are demo bikes rented out?

Sounds like an ex demo Orange from the Hub? if so, Yes, they rented out their Demo bikes.

You do need a meter to measure max tho, I don’t ever pedal for a full minute un-interupted unless I’m climbing, and there’s no way I could sustain my absolute max for more than a few seconds.

I’m not a pedaller at all, generally just use short bursts of sprinting to get upto speed and use the terrain and gradient to gain speed, I don’t really even use my 11T sprocket off road and can still hit 35 on a descent.

    No need Chief

    138 cadence easily achievable….AWESOME

not as AWESOME as your arithmetic.

pedalling at 120 rpm gives over 35mph with a 26×2.4″ tyre

    What’s your highest cadence Al?

Aye and 120rpm isn’t even that fast, BMX racers pedal their bikes to 35 on the flat hitting 170rpm.

we’re not talking about spinning on the flat tho

Dunno where you get your figures from TJ but 35mph+ is perfectly achievable with 36×11

Yes it’s possible (last few Tiagra HTII BBs I bought were £3 from Rosebikes)
<EDIT> just checked and they’ve DOUBLED in price 😯

    a wound down Pike/Rev?

Rebas do not have a lot of clearance, but why should they? if you want mud clearance run a mud tyre rather than a big dry(ish) conditions tyre.

I don’t think a DH bike makes jumping easy at all, it just makes not giving a **** about your landings a viable option 😉

Have you been to Chicksands? nice easy (flat) 4X track there, dunno about the rest of the SE 4X tracks

is there anywhere you can try it in the Edinburgh area?
<EDIT> Aye, Porty and the commie pool 4 sessions a week 😀

Where are you? 4X (and BMX racing) is most popular/accessable in the South.

there some pretty tall BMX racers too.

it’d help quite a bit if you were a “jumper”

Yeah, Njee, I know that would work but I love the stiffness of Saint cranks.
Could go Profile 3-pc with 5 bolt spider but IME they never run perfectly straight, aren’t the best BB Design for muddy use and even with a Ti BB axle would be heavier.

snowpaul – I wish you could still get 20T granny rings as I hate large cassette sprockets and the excess chain and increased chainslap in the smaller sprockets when descending that comes with running them.

20/36 & 11 -28 8speed cassette would be ideal for me, have no useable cross over gears, be as light as 10speed XT for 20% of the outlay but far more durable/reliable.

you can’t win in an event like Kielder 100 with less than a 42 up front I imagine.

and yet you can win a DH world cup with a 36T
    .

    mcc are you thick?

Ok, if you’re all so tough and manly then why aren’t you all spinning out the highest gear on downhills which happens to me??

I feel the lowest gear isn’t low enough,

FFS, make your mind up. 🙄

4″ tyres at 6 psi should sort you out.

monksie – how many kids or adults have you taught to ride?

    stabilizers are fine.
my youngest learned to ride a bike without them at 2 1/2 but after a few days I actually put them back on along with a balance buddy (handle) as it’s easier to push her up hills with them. a few months later she was way stronger at pedalling, this would not have happened without re-fitting them.

    Eh?

Why do you think that? I spent an amazing afternoon biking with one of my kids today

real time XC in the 11/42 = fireroad at best (and tucking would be quicker than pedalling)
