Mine weighs just over 31 lbs and handles just like “a bike”. Just like any other style of bike

Fatbikes do not handle like any other style of bike at all. I could go into why in great detail but it would clearly be wasted on you.

It was a hoot at Glentress (including Spooky Woods) but too much of a handful on the rockier trails at Laggan Wolftrax.

Your idea of “a hoot” is way different to mine.

each to their own but don’t just spout total bollox to try and justify your choice.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking the latest parts are needed, the’re often actually far worse,

Only replace things you’ve broken or worn past working.

7speed, 100mm forks and v brakes are good enough for anything 99% of mtbers ride.

Helmets, gloves, glasses, armour and specific cyclin clothes are rarely actually required at all either.

Run rear tyres until you can see the carcus through the tread.

I made a folding bed from wood, a single hinge and a support stilt for the centre, it sits across the front seats supported by the window ledges of each door. an inflatable ‘readybed’ lies on top with the pillow end passenget side.. Wiith the silver screens and a curtain between the cab and rear it’s like a cosy little bedroom.

Get rid of it and buy something else

pretty much every single part could be replaced for something lighter

a nice light Alu 4X hardtail will be faster in all but your occasional use category.

But if it’s a short travel bike to have fun on rather than race I’d also check out the YT Play and Spesh SX

    What bikes have you got?

Point is, he cannae ride for shit, falls off on the road and cuts himself and everything so he’s only going to ride on soft surfaces like sand, horse shit and hay from now on.
I on the other hand simply bounce off roads without flinching. 😉

Jo the lengths you have gone to here in over analysing the simple purchase of a ” toy” are quite remarkable.
    Well done! 😀
new parents do post some bollox on here so don’t worry, you’re not alone.
I happen to know a boy who first rode a bike without stabilizers at just over 2yrs old and a fair few kids who did before 3 (all without ever even seeing a balance bike)

Haven’t ridden longer than a 55mm stem for 18 years now, did once have a 135 neg rise one on an xc race hardtail about 20 yrs ago buut it wasn’t me that built it and it didn’t stay.

of course it flexes through the stems “shaft” it’s simply easier to see the result of overall flex at the ends

contradictions you say, on wiki, well it is written by TJ isn’t it? 😉

in the mid-to-late 1970s. At the time, there were no mountain bikes.

Joe Breeze is normally credited with introducing the first purpose-built mountain bike in 1978. Tom Ritchey then went on to make frames for a company called MountainBikes,

anyway… whatever year the term “mountainbiking” was officially invented still doesn’t change the fact that to use the verb “mountainbiking” a mountainbike is required, feel free to make-up new terms like BMX-mountainbiking, CX-mountainbikin, invisible-mountainbiking or yer-maw-mountainbiking to share with yer mates, as said above, “it might stick” 😉

when you do, simply sit on it and hold the bars at each end firmly while leaning over the stem, pull one hand up while pushing the other down, watch the stem’s face plate carefully!
repeat on other bikes with different stems and see there is a definite difference between stem stiffnesses.

I dislike riding bikes with flexy stems, cranks or wheels.

Sorry, Davo, I can’t recommend anything majorly stiff in such a long length I’m afraid

Woody, do you have a bike nearby?

    GW

Nope, Woody.. it’s not even difficult.. all stems flex to some extent.

Davo – are you saying you think more flex is coming from the steerer?

CBA reading all that, quote whatever you deem wiki to be disagreeing with if you CBA.

The Hope’s far too flexy for my taste even in a short length.
Why are you only looking at those 2 stems?

Ps. I’ve ridden “yer maw” many many times..

being chairlift accessed it’d be rude not to 😉

    GW

    You honestly wouldn’t 😉

You can call it whatever you want, but as I already explained in the last lesson you’d be wrong if you called it “mountainbiking” on anything other than a mountainbike, do keep up!

So, what do you call trail riding on a CX?

er.. “trail riding” 🙄 ! feel free to add “on a CX bike” if you want to come across as a knobber 😉

RE: XC racing – Funny how some of them can ride the more technical terrain fine, you’d think to be bunched together like that they’d all have a similar level of fitness eh? 😕
I’ve always said XC racing needs to instigate rules against running and obstruction, that video proves my point pretty well.

JoeyV3.14 – Bikes are unnecessary, as are all toys and sporting equipment, we do however gain a tremendous amount of enjoyment and learning from them tho.

Don’t really see what there is to deliberate about TBH, Buy your kids whatever toys you want, it’s whether they appreciate/respect/share their possessions that matters, not how many/what they have. If a toy is un-used then by all means get rid of it in any way you wish but if it’s not taking up valuable space why rush?

Sefton – WC xc tracks are finally starting to become more of a test of skill than in previous years but don’t kid yourself that they are anything like WC DH tracks were even 15yrs ago.. that video has an embarassingly large mount of lame if those are meant to be the worlds best riders.

BruceWee – You can’t go “mountainbiking” on a cyclocross bike same as you can’t go “canoeing” in a raft. I’m not saying you can’t go the same places, it’s simply down to the correct use of the verb. 🙄

😆 @ the naivety of a CX rider thinking there’s anything resembling either v. Steep or technical at the trail centre or WC XC course

Speak for yourself surfr – .my first mtb 20+ years back sounds similar only it’s first ride was down v. steep technical chutes with drops and jumps with the saddle slammed, strikingly far from pedalling round deserted football pitches and parkland.

When I ride my bmx or roadbike off-road I’m not “mountainbiking” am I?

    Seriously. 🙄

At your weight try 32 front 35 rear as a starting point off-road, issues with pinch flats or tyres folding, in turns go up 2psi at a time until fixed. For the road you should get away with 65 with pretty much any decent tyre and rim combo.
