Bike rumour have nailed it, they said “As further evidence that Surly live in a parallel universe in which suspension never evolved to its current (really quite good) state, aluminum is suitable only for containing beer, hydraulic disc brakes are something to be viewed with suspicion, and neither skis nor snowshoes were ever invented, we have the Krampus. A steel frame…”

is Surly some sort of cult? many Surly Fanbois seem to have truely lost the plot to the stage of stalking Surlys next project and wanting it before even knowing what it will be. 😕

Seeing as the word “better” seems popular, are Aluminium and Carbon not far “better” materials for an overly heavy bike you’re going to use on beaches and salted roads in winter?

Tyres are suspension. The original tuneable cheap light suspension.

only thing is..”suspension” has moved on since that classic steel suspension atb the Raleigh activator..

Ride a fat bike and you will understand. It’s an extreme example, but big tyres feel good.

I have, and probably understand how bicycle tyres behave better than many of the fatbike owners I know but for me, personally they do not feel good anywhere other than over sand/bogs at slow(ish) speeds and for any riding involving acceleration, faster directional changes or rough/technical ground at speed they handle awfully. IMHO short travel high quality damped suspension would be a welcome addition to aid control for a bicycle with massive, terrible handling low pressure tyres if you ever want to ride them anywhere other than smooth surfaces at speed but that simply would not fit the image their Cult promotes as much as a sprung leather saddle or a frame mounted hip flask – image over function? 😉

    mountainbiking isn’t.

    Life is 😉

Joe – not sure how you missed it but I’ve already answered the question correctly.

Charlie, your definition of “better” is another world from mine 😆
My hardtail rear tyre of choice all year round is a near bald (centre knobs) 2.35 maxpro Bling bling at 40psi, straight line grip is really not something that keeps me up at night ;).

but basically you get 3″ of tune-able air suspension for around £80.

Ah, like a 1993 Rock Shox Mag21 with no oil? Cool 8)

CK’s described it’s use far better, cheers dude! although some of the descents I’ve been lucky enough to ride in the Cheviots are gnarlier than many national DH tracks and I really wouldn’t want any bike Surly make under me coming down them. 😉
looks like the mancave might need some more wheel hooks for the rafters soon, eh? 😀

balanced against never sliding off the pedals every again, I’ve never felt the need to slide my feet arround to re-position them anyway, just get it right first time.

How extremely closed-minded 😕 One position cannot always be correct on flats, same as your hands on the grips.

Can’t say i found any difference to my old Vans or Element shoes.

from your last comment I can see how that might be the case.

Look just like any other skate shoe.

None I’d be seen dead in.. do you buy your Skate shoes at TK maxx with price being the deciding factor?

slack HA? you thinking of going mountainbiking somewhere? 😛

You’re hard enough to keep up with up Butterdean on that bloody ancient Muddy Fox Courier 8)

one position is slightly more progressive than the other

won’t make a whole load of difference TBH

it’s not the only reason at all.

no longer being able to slide your feet to reposition them, not enough feedback through the soles, poor construction, acting like sponges in the wet and being ugly as **** are a few more.

they’d all represent the same difficulty to fit.
not very difficult at all if you realise what you need to achieve, ie. close tolerance, lined up and rotated correctly with adequate clearance from the frame to a possible complete nightmare if not.

4.5k for an Orange is crazy, IMO…

Why? They’re good bikes built in Britain. Obviously that means they should cost more than something made in the far east. The fact they don’t is brilliant! They’re absolutely fine if you like that style of single pivot, that’s it though, fine!
They do cost more than other similar bikes from the far east.
I agree, spending £4.5K on an Orange is crazy. (I have no issue with spending that sort of cash on a bike I’d actually like tho.)

bloody marvelous, and what I have been asking for for years.

I could have tried this with a QR i know, but that involves faff during the ride which I hate. I’ve learned a lot on my last half a dozen rides.

Slam it the whole way for an entire ride, it will teach you even more

PJ hands/feet contact is not required to initiatte the roll or break the initial impact.
no two falls/crashes are the same

Julian – yes, that’s one of the reasons (but we’re not talking why I choose not to wear a helmet just now 😉 )

Far too much common sense there Tom. 😉

I still use my hands (and feet. funnily enough) to break my fall fairly often too, other than thorn cuts the last times I damaged my hands was with a saw then a door, last bike riding hand injury was actually caused by wearing gloves (I had to wear them) the glove caught on a branch ripping me clean off the bike taking the finger of the glove with it. (had I not been wearing gloves the branch would have just brushed past my hand giving me a scratch)

IF recommend giving the paint on their frames a chance harden for a couple of months after delivery. I did follow that (mostly).

Sounds like the perfect excuse not to ride of “that” type of rider 😉

    I just watched this too..

Love this guy too and I’d love him to do a WC, 4X was much better with him pissing about on his singlepeed rear brake only DJ bike.

Dick, just incase there’s some sort of confusion I’m using the noun “Fact” meaning “true”
shouldn’t be too difficult to disprove me if I’m wrong and I’d be very happy if you could.

pimpmaster – tends to be the back of my right shoulder and back of right upper arm spreading the initial impact load (as much a glance as an impact)

What relevance does this have to whether I wear gloves or not?

    GW

Do you know (and I’ve checked the thread and not seen this) that riding without gloves wears your grips down much quicker?

Yes, known this since I was a kid, IMO it’s a good thing as I also hate thick grips!

Sorry, but I just don’t think that if you go over the bars properly, when you’re absolutely flat out downhill that you’ll roll. That takes thought. And you’ve no time for that. Instinct takes over at that speed, whether you like it or not, and you stick you’re hands out. Its involuntary. It just happens

My instinct is to roll or slide out at high speed. oh.. and you do have time to think.. my personal reaction time is 0.2s – a fairly average time for most humans

GW, are you too much of a lady to sweat?

    in all probability, yes!
Do other men’s palms sweat a lot then?
The fact I don’t wear gloves and rarely a helmet def means I sweat a lot less when biking.

So, when you crash, what part of your body tends to hit the ground first?

Depends on the sort of crash and the sort of terrain/surroundings.
You can’t seriously expect one definitive answer?

    I’ve crashed thousands of times

    GW
    Free Member

So what part of your body breaks your fall?

the whole point of rolling is that no one part of the body breaks the fall rather than stopping dead and being badly injured.

Blisters only really happen if you’re not used to it, they’ll eventually turn into calluses you can cut off with no blood loss at all.

    GW

You really need this question answered?

it’s not urgent, no.. like I said, just interested.

Have you ever been over the bars at speed? Do you know what you tend to do instinctively?

Yes! many many many times. I tend to Tuck n roll mainly, what’s your point?
