mine is about 1/4 along (so as you say bench space)with jaws on edge (so I can put tall bits in upright without hitting bench),
gusamcFree Member? inland – Canadian canoe – that’s roofable or an old topper dinghy – roofable, unsinkable and you can get 10 people on em, see if sailing club has an open day – they do where I am [*there are probably more modern equivs now – pico? ? topaz ???]
re nipper – give em some water confidence/experience first
windsurfer is roughly equiv to mtb in terms of fun etc (imho)
gusamcFree Member“It’s because they is communist, innit?”
I suspect not but believe it or not they ‘were’ once.
“The man who led the famous
mass trespass over Kinder
Scout in 1932 – an event that
led directly to the foundation
of the Ramblers’ Association
– died in January aged 90.
Benny Rothman was born in
Cheetham, Manchester, in
1911, won a scholarship to
the Central High School for
Boys, but left to work as a
mechanic to help the family’s
finances. In the 1920s he
joined the Young Communist
League, but coupled politics
with a love of the outdoors,
enjoying biking and camping
trips to the Peak District
and Snowdonia.
The idea for the mass trespass
came while he was camping at
Rowarth with the British
Workers Sports Federation at
Easter 1932. A group of
members were turned back
from Bleaklow by threatening
gamekeepers, and realised
that if there had been more
of them they could not have
been stopped.”As I understand it it was the unemployed, socailists and communist workers party members who did most of the ‘dirty’ work
Some things never change – ramblers always have been misrable b*****s, re Kinder
“Although the event was originally opposed by the official ramblers’ federations, the vicious sentences which were handed down on five of the young trespassers actually served to unite the ramblers’ cause.”
http://kindertrespass.com/index.asp?ID=125gusamcFree Membertake a few and stick them somewhere mixed sun/shade and keep them wet to make them rot – insect happiness leading to bird happiness
gusamcFree Memberyou could always consider windsurfing – has the benefit of more locations and is suitable when its so windy you might be off biking
I’ve been hooked on all 3(surfing, windsurfing, mtb), mtb is still going, down to 1 surfboard and 0 windsurfers – it was about time cost vs benefit. Surfing – too far to be practical (but I did have a couple of years of an awful lot of brilliant weekends in Devon, windsurfing – when you get better you want strong winds (lot more chance at coast and more kit to carry/buy), mtbing – can do locally or travel for variety – so it won [*but a 2 week holiday in Devon to come].
gusamcFree Membertry independent IFA (*you probably have to pay nowdays)
internet on:
– 25% of entire pot tax free after after 55
– drawdown/flexible drawdown
*annuities are crepe just now – see drawdown(my bloke is suggesting I do 25% tax free, then in a while start doing drawdown and then as I get older (age increases annuity rates) split into drawdown/annuity –
gusamcFree MemberDr P
can you explain what happens when private care goes tits up please.
gusamcFree Membergf and I preferred Barmouth (*more downmarket), we stayed in Barmouth and only visited Abersoch for a day – the peninsula does have a nice mellow friendly feel, Abersoch felt slightly wrong (shops etc in relationship to actual area needs), we preferred the Barmouth, fab estuary, train options, bike routes, walks and better views and more choice nearby (in our opinions)
gusamcFree Membermainly well, Friday – Thai and beers, Saturday – payment in full…, Sun got mugged at a Country Show – extensive rural products on display – crocs, designer clothing, Costco, water softeners….., short but sweet bike ride, Monday – awesome loop in rural Wilts, sun, wildlife, next to no people (*except at Avebury), flask, sarnies, swayig crops, dry trails, happy farmers – best ride of year by miles..
gusamcFree Member8″ folding saw
I reckon if you constantly go through nettles you acclimatize … maybe
had my 1st bramble incident 2 weeks ago, down a flight of stairs, bars caught one side, neatly twisting me into the fence – ho hum
gusamcFree Memberbuy the gfs (stupendously) expensive stuff from a HK ebay seller, which makes it (nearly) viable, no probs.
gusamcFree MemberAlso add in ‘future certainty’ to calculation, something I suspect that you’ll find more appealing when you’re 50 plus.
1 – Amount
– you can compute the worth of your final salary (*and it probably takes into account inflation as part of the deal), given this you can plan your retirement
– you cannot compute what a DC one will be worth (*poss further complicated as if you want to realise it when market is on its erse etc) and also how it will deal with inflation, this makes planning harder.
2 – timing
-final salary pensions are paid until you are dead, and you(re pensions) don’t care when you die or managing your pension
-with a DC system (*unless you go annuity – which are crepe just now) you need to make sure that you die on the day that you use the last of your fund up, as otherwise that might be an issuegusamcFree Membernot quite a hospital story, but related and possibly will cheer you up
just out of hospital after a perianal abcess op (abcess cut out so extra hole in arse basically), anyway home afterwards, the extra hole needing to be repacked with antiseptic stuff on a daily basis till healed. I live on my own so a charming English rose type (maybe 55ish, slender build, grey shortish neat hair, specs etc)nurse/home visitor turns up in a sports car, in she comes all happy/smiley etc makes herself at home on the couch and runs through my notes, then after some medical + small talk/banter she gloves up and I assume the position, legs apart, shreddies round ankles, touching toes, she cleans wound and repacks and then her hand most certainly lingered and I quote exactly – “fine firm buttocks”, she had a right smile on, if I hadn’t a gf it might have been so different………………
gusamcFree Membertools inside cheap bumbag, that inside placcy bag, renew placcy bag occasionally
*sort of OT, also put in some latex/thin disposable gloves, really handy for keeping hands clean etc
gusamcFree Memberyep
beach, motorbike, wetsand, broom, broom, powersliding goes wrong, thrown right up over the top, crunch, collarbone gone. Then had to pick the bike up and ride home 5 miles (*that was sore), mum put it in a sling and then train to nearest hospital, they very helpfully did some checks, put a loop round each arm (at top) and tied them together to hold bone and then I didn’t do much for a while, but it healed fine and no problems with it since
gusamcFree MemberI ‘heard’ a modern equivalent last week, whilst visiting dad
dads mate was up (he’s at least 50), we were all coffeeing/chatting away and then the mates iphone went, he smiled, answered it and we all heard his missus yell ‘your teas on the table’ and just like childhood he was off ……….
gusamcFree MemberI was told that the ‘shed’ should overhang the concrete/etc base by a couple of inches to stop rain etc pooling on the base and going under shed etc, if it didn’t get bit(s) of wood, dampcourse top it and put that under shed base to isolate it from wet/damp from underneath
gusamcFree Memberslight alternative – check out wigwams/teepees/camping pods etc
e.g. http://www.wigwamholidays.com/ and there are now uk sites with prepitched big tents etc etcthis way you can try camping using existing bedding etc etc, sort of a halfway house, for cooking try the portable foil bbqs (take bricks etc to keep em off grass etc) – and pick a site that is within an easy walk of pub/food etc it just might rain durng the summer
gusamcFree Memberin terms of body age I’d say 35ish to 55ish, in terms of mind much more varied and individual, ime some people are born middle aged and it’s definitely the case that some grow old disgracefully
gusamcFree Membercurrently collecting 9sp
reckon I’ll end on 9sp/26″, I’m on onza pedals so holding firm against evolution is doablegusamcFree MemberThere might be a fast boat trip to St Kilda (H&L), mate did it last time I was up – he loved it (I was biking)
Skye – Otter spotting – http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=179206&y=822161&z=120&sv=179206,822161&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=748&ax=179206&ay=822161&lm=0 – getr there before dawn, flask
also Otter spotting boat trip at Kyle of L
Plockton very scenic and I think it does row boat hire (train there as well)
edit talisker bay worth a visit (good waterfall)
Gleelg Brochs

*go further up road is a hippy garden with an old showmans caravan doing teasgusamcFree Memberre lender – hunt around for the best deal, people who are on commission tend to not always see the best option…….esp if recommndation was a bank etc (they have tied advisers) you want an Independent Financial Advisers (IFA) they are not tied to a companies products – alos use tinternet yourself
Make your offer subject to including carpets and curtains (*and anything else you want/believe/think should be included in the price) and subject to survey
I used an internet solicitor once and it was fine but am currently going local (easier to drop dosc, signs etc etc)- buying a house adjusts your financial perspective – you will find youself saying ‘it’s only 200 quid’ …. but do shop around and get quotes and don’t be afraid to say can you do it for X less
gusamcFree MemberI did “not a lot on in the loft with no shoes and found a bleeding large angry wasp” day yesterday, naked gardening sounds far too easy after that fiasco
gusamcFree Memberre charity bags == free bin liners (I get about 3 a week)
re mail – if there is a reply envelope, simply remove all details relating to you, fill with as much untraceable other junk mail (and charity bags) as possible, make it really heavy, and pop in post.
gusamcFree MemberI tend to shout dring dring or bike behind, mostly works.
Have been earholed by ramblers for not havin a bell and gf has been earholed for having a bell – not having a bell saves weight…….
gusamcFree Membercheers
*check fresh water/bog capacity if you’ve not got ‘site facilities’ – it’s limited………………
gusamcFree Member*note comments about prices, as you’ll pay site fees as well, I’ve been looking at buying – but would hire first to see if size pees me off
google on Mooveo p600 hire (*fixed bed, 22ft long I think) (*I like this as it *appears* the ”garage” under rear bed would hold the bikes and it’s about as small as fixed bedders go
try Elddis Autoquest 115 or 120 – make up bed – bike rack generally available (bit shorter than mooveo)
*for small try romahome r20 (*no shower, makeup bed) berlingo+longer
*if you do hire one could you drop me a how it went mail – cheers
gusamcFree Memberin a similar vein to badger baiting
you co could also point out that having more responsible users around may help deter fly tipping etc
gusamcFree Member** you’ll probably be alright by then but bear in mind, the season, narrow canal paths, farmers, hedge trimming, hawthorn – in the last 3 week gf and I got 30+ punctures on two canal rides……..
**Edit ** CHECK FOR ANGLING COMPETITIONS – it’s in upper case as we had to go through one on Bath/Reading – carbon poled twunts one and all (*very few exceptions) but most got the hump and were slow to move their cradled poles all of which which were blocking the path – < 1 mph …… inconsiderate, thoughtless r soles
gusamcFree Memberdo some googling etc, I’m (nearly) sure I saw some American research (*it was on tinternet) that indicated bikes were ‘better’ for wildlife than dogs/ramblers as they went through the area more directly and more quickly causing less disturbance, esp than dogs which tend to area criss cross etc and will chase something that moves etc.
gusamcFree Membercan you isolate the issue ?
ie get both ends of cable free and pull to see if the cable is sticky.
and get a seperate bit of wire etc to see if pedal movement ishad a sticky motorbike clutch when cable inner (I guess) got frayed at a bend, new cable and bingo – sorted,
gusamcFree MemberIan – my knowledge is partly local and partly via this post: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/minister-thinks-bikes-are-ok-on-footpaths-by-implication
gusamcFree MemberFor the 1st holiday you might want to try and do as cheapo as poss coz it’s not everybodys cup of tea, and the cup of tea is likely to be significantly weather impacted, irritatingly if you buy good kit it generally makes camping more fun.
– what about portable bbqs (foil ones – and two bricks etc to save the grass)
– get airbeds/mattresses etc and just use current bedding (*assuming quilts) – take pillows – I’ve camped for years and maily use a quilt
– can you pick a campsite with a cafe etc as some do this and with a nearby town for pub/chippie etc facilities
– if there is a nearby supermarket nip out get hot X, salad, coleslaw etc etc etc
cooker is handy for morning coffee etc, if you have two rings design meals to suit – ie 2 pan meals (pad with takeaway chips etc)|(I use a 2 ring gaz with 907 cylinder)
– torches, led lights etcre loo – pick a campsite with decent loos, showers and washup facilities
take some bin liners (for wet stuff) and have rules about where wet stuff/people can and can’t go – ie not near bedding etc etc
you can usually tie a clothes line between tent/car and if you hang stuff on a car on a sunny day it dries quickly(shut doors on it to stop it blowing away)sorry bout this, old fuddy duddy lecture – do NOT EVER change a gas cycinder in tent or near people, if you do cook in tent all people should be nearer the door than the cooker/not blocked by cooker, and do NOT put a smoldering bbq anywhere near/in tent drown it in water and leave well away
