Saw the Glensanda landing strip route ages ago on MM and was wondering about that. No idea what it’s like or if it’s worth doing.

    *Back in 80s

Austin Maxi 1, £300 with years MOT, drove from Reading to Twickers every day for year, never serviced, just kept topping oil, it blew up 2 days before MOT expired. (*You could get a XR200 or DT175 motorbike in back). Nice scrappie gave me £20 and lifted it out of street. Once I came out of office and it was gone, old lady told me the workmen had moved it 100yds up road as they were tarring, no probs. Other time, pissing down, rushed out, unlocked door, started it up and then realised that the steering wheel was furry covered, my car was 2 cars further up…. no probs

Austin Maxi 2, £300 with years MOT, ran it as above, and then on MOT expiry sold it to a scrapper for £30. Two weeks later mtbing in the shrubbery, going past some council semis this bloke ran up to me waving, it was the scrappie, there was the car – windows/lights etc out, acro props holding roof and sills apart etc etc, he’d won a £50 trphy banger racing in it, he was well pleased.

could go S on road from Kenmore (*see loop cutoff 2nd looks interesting) and join the lower track (at Inverbain) that goes back W to join the original route – it ‘looked’ ok (*from what I could see) however the road back would be nice scenery

have you tried asking mortgage company

(gf daughter has a flat, std mortgage PLUS a restrictive covenant on letting from freeholder, however after asking politely via writing has got written permission from both)
*need to check insurance as well

yes, it’s generally a learning experience as you can get ‘stiled out’, but lots of good stuff out there, I’m ‘polite cheeky’, ie slow down, say hallo, smile etc and helps put loops together.

? black paths – do you mean boundaries

Scottish island idea is good (see also Harris and Lweis, Uists, Barra and back)

check out Dumfries and Galloway/Solway Firth/Galloway Forest park/Clatteringshaws/Glentrool etc see ‘Forest Drive’ on map ie scenic, on a ‘cart track’ for camping etc, also significant number of ‘forestry tracks’ there that looked useable (for a trailer)

    sound timber sound good

I used ronseal ‘purple cap’ stuff, worked fine, sandable.

You could, get some dowelling, and a drill bit the same size and then use good wood to mount the dowelling to form a skeleton that you can build on, but to be fair I’ve seen people fill in using paper and chicken wire mesh, so that might be quicker…………

I’d have a look (above comment re rods and DIY), however it might be more complicated. Makr sure it’s YOUR (*own personal) drain. Your house is connected to a common drain, which is in turn connected to a bigger common drain (etc etc). When the common drain that my gfs house blocked is connected to they split the charge bewteen all houses (about 8 I think) on the common segment but that was on a council estate.

If the legs etc are hollow can you fill in the hole in 1 end with glue and stick a dowel (like MidTQG) out of it and get it set nice and hard and then fill other hole with glue (araldaite two parts works for me) get it tacky and then stick that way ?

If you want an off piste ‘cafe’ – try here http://www.lochalsh.co.uk/glenelg_broch.shtml, two brochs, ‘cafe’ is opposite upper/more ruined one. It was an old traditional wooden gypsy caravan with log burner run by hippies, *caution VERY BASIC, only tea/coffee and snack bars but the brochs are interesting we were there on a howling/pissing wet day – glorious.

    For a scramble – here – http://www.lochalsh.co.uk/falls_of_glomach.shtml *narrow, high, slippy…

Make sure you goto and scramble about the http://www.walkingenglishman.com/scotland07.htm

as a bit of an aside, can anybody suggest a telescope that I might get cheapish (200ish -ebay etc) that could be easily packed/car carried and maybe walked a bit that would be viable as a normal telescope and a skywatcher – if that’s possible
(Ie used my dads old 1950s naval telescope and never cease to be amazed at what you can see)

re strap on racks, I used (Hollywood) 3 bikes, fine (4 hook points). Just make sure you do the straps properly and don’t rely on the clamp holding(ie clamp as tight as you can then use the loose part of the strap to put a knot around the clamp so that it would have to slip both the knot and clamp to loosen, also check during journey etc as wet and wear (esp when new) can stretch straps). Also as it was a hatchback I always used two 1″ motorbike adjustable hooked tiedowns, going from rear seatbelt mount points, thru hatch sides to the end of the rack legs, and used these to ‘force’ the rack onto the car and IMHO these are a lot beefier than rack straps.

Also consider a lightbar, I added one using scotchlocks and had the end of the car cable zippied to the rear tow point) *ie no towbar etc needed)

cound you change the hydraulic actuation from across the fingers to two finger levers (sorry for bad explanation and I think leverage etc could be an issue ) but imagine a bike with both brake levers on the same side and mounted vertically (so that both brake lever tips are pointing up and alinged with where two fingers go off the front of the bars in normal grip position) so that by pulling the appropriate finger towards you you would activate one or both brakes ?

as a rural Scot, as a teenager my dad taught me to let people pass (blip LH indicator, slow, drift left) if they were in a hurry, partly due to consideration, partly as keeping a twaat stuck up your bum doesn’t really appear that clever, and partly as you might be in a hurry one day and they might return the favour. In my youth it was pretty common and worked well.

It appears now to be a langauge only spoken in limited parts of Scotland and mainly by lorry drivers, I’ve tried it in England a few times and you end up stopped on the verge with 3 cars up your erse.. people seem to have forgotten(or never learned) overtaking but are happy to sit 25ft behind you at 50mph………….

great point about accelerating on the straights with a per corner emergency stop.

Driving slow is like driving quick – it can be done safely by appropriately skilled drivers, and given that most people are better than ‘average’ drivers it’s strange that so few people seem able to manage it.

two routes on Harris, 1 is a true classic and I personally enjoyed the other

The classic is Rheinigalen (spelling) that goes to the youth hostel.

Get a sunny day (*ho ho ho) (*I was there in May)

Drive the Applecross/Torridon road, be impressed, use pub at Applecross (on seafront) for post ride food.

    Do this – http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=172750&y=847235&z=120&sv=172750,847235&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=644&ax=172750&ay=847235&lm=0

I did the North route to Kenmore, good and rideable, it ‘looked’ if you then went S to Inverbain (on the road) you could loop back.

it IS worth pondering, especially for the people you will leave behind e.g. kids/partners. My parents are elderly, I’ve got (I’m a single child) all the details on the funeral, invites, who gets what etc etc and what solicitor it’s all registerd with, it was (IMHO) a very hard and emotional conversation, however having seen the crap caused (and my mum was a nurse as well and she saw lots) where that’s not fully decided or undocumented I think it’s a great idea.

I hope my parents go from lucid and happy to dead (and I hope the same for me), they were both incredibly active and outdoory and I hate to think of them hurting and not enjoying life.
