Neglected my bike for a little while due to other commitments, now totally back into biking.

    Decided to strip my bike:

New grease, new cosmetic parts (Some bought from the classifieds), new drive train.

    Fresh and satisfying:

    😀

I’ve managed to get the cassette off now, I’m heading to the local bike shop soon so if they have that Hope Metal Press piece thingy majig I’ll just pick one up there, if it’s over a few quid they can jog on and i’ll take up the blunt object option. I wasn’t aware it was there purely for the seal to seat.

Again, always much appreciated for all the help. This section of the forum is what makes STW I find.

The special circular tool at 5:27 that he uses to finally press the freehub onto the hub, is that needed or is there a bodge version?

Ooh ok a side seems to be forming for Deore, added to the fact they’re pretty reasonably priced too.

I’ve just spent 70 on the chain and cassette so was hoping my only options wouldn’t be too expensive.

    One more question:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=38189

On that SLX version it states it as (Double only), will the deore be a straight fit with a bash or does it need to be specific?

Right is it purely that CRC don’t have any of XT 36T? I took the presumption that it didnt exist as it didn’t say it as an out of stock option.

Will running a steel ring be harsher on the chain?

See, now I think there are times when riding the Beast at coed-y-brenin that I probably do use the 32, but I’m wondering if maybe I use it purely as I have the ability to, and that if I went down to 28 that i’d just cope then.

The down side being that If i’m wrong, I may have wasted £40.

Damn you ratios. Anybody had the same dilemma and overcome it or failed horribly?

Ok, officially gone off the idea 😀

I was just replacing them for the sake of it really as I will have the bike in pieces, but the bearings and headsets are just 2 parts of bikes I havent ever needed to go near.

I suppose I’ll give it a try without the shock, it’s side to side movement I’m looking for?

May as well purchase them, I imagine they dont have a sell by date and if there is movement in the swingarm at least I wont have to wait another 4 days or so for them to be delivered.

Thanks for all the responses by the way.

rickon – No worry mate, if the ebay stuff ends up crap I’ll use your suggestion 🙂

couldawoulda – I think I should be fine, I’m only going to be using it for top tube / down tube / forks etc, nothing amazingly ‘shapey’ 🙂

couldawoulda – Perfect! Have ordered from ebay 🙂 For £10 its worth the risk 🙂

    Thanks for your help!

See my usual style of riding is anything pointing downwards so short stems are my usual taste. Obviously as I’ll be building this up for commuting/xc however I think I’m going to have to extend slightly 🙂

I too am 5ft 10 so you’re reassuring me more about my frame size choice. My current Alpine 160 is 16″ and does feel a little small.

I’m sure in the grand scheme of things, I’m not racer or wish to compete, so the differencer between an 18″ frame and 17″ frame probably won’t have much affect on me 🙂

Thanks for all your input it’s been more than helpful 🙂

Right that might help then, yeah I actually use the bike to ride to work as well (Shock horror I know 🙂 )but on long xc rides it does play with my back a little. I’ll have a good measuring session but I think I’ve worked out of calculators etc that a 17″ is correct for me, Which does sound about right.

avdave2- Are you referring to the China Carbon frames? Can a longer stem not remedy the shorter TT?

    GSuperstar

Thanks for the responses. I haven’t had a ‘fitted’ bike in ages so I genuinely don’t know my standard size. I suppose finding a mate my height would be a good start thanks Clubber.

rob2 – Interesting you say that as it was TT length etc that was a concern as something I may overlook, I imagine all 17″ frames etc dont all have the same length tube etc. I’ve googled a calculator 🙂

To be fair, I’ve ordered from them twice. First time the stuff came the next day super fast was well impressed.

Tried to order some Oakleys from them last week purely based on their delivery time, but their stock wasnt correct. They did however let me know this about an hour after placing the order so cant complain too much 🙂

However my reply is pretty much pointless as you mentioned the original post was a fair time ago, but I am bored at work 🙂

Emac65 – Hope hubs are fantastic arent they 🙂 That click is one of my most favourite sound sin the world lol.

teamslug – Cams really dont do it any justice do they, the only way I can tell looking back at that jump is the click noise when it freewheels in the air. I’ve had some brilliant trails and jumps that I’ve looked back on and been so disappointed at the cams performance.

But in regards to your original question, all the new bits I rode on the Red trails wre fantastic. I used to get bored of a weeks riding but I think we did the MBR/Dragon 3 days in a row due to the ‘fun/rush’ element 🙂

Only a quick one but shows the Slab Jump from false teeth:

I believe it was the MBR or Dragon we did the majority of, found it a lot more fun than the Beast.

That’s the thing I have contacted Slik before to no avail, and then contacted again and to be honest i’m expecting the same lack of response.

    They literally seem ideal otherwise.

I’d also recommend the HD option.

I have the standard Widescreen (Non HD) and this is the footage I get when uploaded to youtube:

myheadsashed – I’m so glad that someone has actually mentioned the whole ‘profit’ bit.

Prototypes, Promotional items, trade stands, advertising… all this costs money, doesnt just come out of thin air.

STW does seem to spawn ignorant people 🙂

If it’s for DH/FR then i’d certainly recommend it.

I bought it too for this purpose, I don’t normally do trail centres, other than once a year, but I was amazed at how well it did there.

I’ve had a week at coed-y-brenin, and multiple messing about on street steps/drops etc with a Diverse Dueler on my Alpine 160.

    In short:

    Amazing shock.

Simon at Loco has been absolutely brilliant with everything, couldn’t have been more helpful on my requirements so i’d shoot him across an email if you have any doubt or just wish to know more.

I’m afraid I have no knowledge in regards to the Fox Coils, never used one.

Lol, some people take things wayyyyy too seriously here, i’ve actually laughed out loud at some of the comments that you can tell are being typed through hatred and gritted teeth 🙂

BontyBuns has particularly made me smile. ‘Arent there better things to do’, yes, probably. There’s probably better things to do when I watch a tv programme, proabably better things to do than order a takeaway. Unfortunately messing with bikes to me is fun 😀
