Lol, I was a slight bit confused there so thank you for the clairty 😀

Will look at the mix and match!

Right ok, wouldn’t a reducer headset put the whole headset down to 1.1/8? Even though the tapered section at the bottom is still 1.5?

Thanks for the replies, I was hoping for an occasional 20% but I suppose that’s quite a large amount.

RWarrior, thanks for the heads up!

Ok think my decision is final then 🙂

Does anybody know if my Saint rear derailleur will be fine with 10 speed?

Also, the difference between 1 x 9 and 1 x 10 with the same front chainring, does the 10 give an extra lower gear, or an extra higher?

    Thanks

    Hi Takisawa2,

When you say 36-32, do you mean a front chainring of either, 36/34/32 ? Or is 32 your rear cassette 11-32???

    I will be running an E-Thirteen guide/Bash set-up.

Ah I understand! Do manufacturers provide this knowledge in their specs? Or is this something people find out the hard way? 😀

    @Nikk

Exactly that, I know changing gears is all very well but health/fitness etc are probably the largest variable.

Bike is an Alpine 160 built ‘burly’ as they say. But on the current gear set-up I made it around coed-y-brenin (Which will be the most uphill I’ll ever do)so I dont think running 32 will take me that long to climatise.

When you say some bikes will be pushing to take a larger than 32 what do you mean?

    Thanks for everyones replies 😀

I think the most ideal ratio for me judging by peoples comments would be:

    1 x 10. 11-36. 34 or 32 upfront.

If I’ve understood correctly, I’m presuming 34 will be minutely worse for climbing, but better for downhill pedalling (again to an extreme / fireroads etc). 32 will be minutely better for climbing, but more likely to spin out on extreme downs.

Thankyou wwaswas, that probably explains why I get confused 🙂

Does bigger at the back refer to a higher gear, or lower?

    GSuperstar

MBalanced – Ok that makes more sense, does lower gear relate to ‘easier’ or ‘harder’ gear? It always confuses me which lower relates to in regards to the above.

Wow, I have just read all that and can tell each one is correct but my brain feels like its going to explode 😀

I’ll have a look at that link, thanks for all the input from everyone. I’ll hopefully have my head round this soon enough 🙂

Wacko: I’ve been looking at the Uzzi and it actually shares quite a lot of the same looks as the SS2, its actually stunning. Something that does depress me a little but with some of these top end bikes, is the cable routing. One thing that often seems to be overlooked and can ruin a bike.

Skywalker, please continue lol. I have contacts in the US (My companies US Office)so transporting goods to and from the US isnt a problem. What service problems?

    Thanks for all the replies.

Toons: Ah I wasn’t aware of the front mech restrictions, which does kind of put a spanner in the works to a small degree. I like to ride Coed-y-brenin and I’m not sure I’d make it without a 2 upfront.

Wacko: The uzzi was the other one I was looking at, I’ll be honest the Intense 951 (look of) has always appealed to me, the SS2 mimicks it which is why I’ve started to have this pipedream as such. The uzzi is a lovely bike, and definitely more all mountain orientated, just doesnt share the same curves as the SS2. I currently run a coil Diverse Dueller with Ti Coil which I love. I might take a bit of a closer look at the Uzzi though I know id still lust after the SS.

Dans160: Nice bike 🙂 Is yours running a single ring upfront to? I feel I’d probably struggle with a single to have it for the high high climbs. Although I’m sure mine wouldn’t be heavier, I prefer to run air up front.

    Hi Toons

    It would either be 1 x 10, or if I had the ability to run 2 x 9 or 2 x 10?

    Definitely not Hammerschmidt.

    Thanks

I wont be needing an anchor for the bike, literally the only stipulation is that I have a Gold Rated lock on my bike. It’s only really going to be in the house when I am, which is fully alarmed. Rape alarm etc is not needed.

I suppose £30 in the grand scheme of things isnt bad really.

Might pick up a Kryptonite 🙂

a horse on a public road is a danger, it has its own brain, i lost my best mate as there was a new rider lost control of the beast (be wasnt speeding/wasnt a loud bike) it turned and my mate was killed, they all want shooting and eating,

I’m aware people have chosen not to respond to your sensitive subject, but you have posted it on a public forum so you have opted for responsive comments.

So firstly no offense and I’m sorry to hear about your loss. But that’s kind of a narrow minded way of looking at things?

The key word ‘public’, a public road is for such, be it on a horse, bike, car.

Another way of looking at your example – ‘a new driver lost control of the car, it turned and my mate was killed, they all want shooting and eating.”

I understand your point is fuelled by emotions of a past experience, but it’s still an extremely narrow minded way of looking at the world.

    Hi Xiphon

I run my device on ISCG mounts on my Alpine 160. So really in the grand scheme of things, if I buy an XTR, Saint or SLX I’m not going to really notice a difference…

    GSuperstar

Lol! No, GSuperstar was abbreviated from Ghetto Superstar from the song when I was about 15, and I’ve just used it from then on.

I think a Superstar Researcher would be a tad in trouble by quoting they got 2 years out of a Shimano Saint BB 😉

    GSuperstar
    Free Member

Ok, so, that’s a definite no to Superstar BBs with so many negative responses in such a small amount of time 😀

Do Bottom Brackets differ depending on their use? For instance will an XTR Bottom Brocket stand up to as much punishment a Saint one will?

Or is a bottom bracket just a bottom bracket?
    Thanks

Andy, as stupid as this may sound I never actually thought of trying them over the plastic head mould bit… they fit perfect!

Apologies, not a Five but an Alpine in Neon Orange so may help? Although pictures never seem to do the neon justice.

ps- I am aware the chain guide is doing nothing here, it was a late night…

    @FunkyDunc

“woop and yay as they are going along because they are so rad”

“We asked them politely to move to which they appeared a little cheesed off.”

“Later on in the trail they again decided to stop, this time along a nice fast singletrack section, again I assume to talk about how fooking brilliant they all were. This time we were not polite and pushed passed them, which again appeared to pee them off a little”

Is you’re anger more from the fact that you’re possinly less ‘rad’?

After all, you had to pass them, then had to pass them again, so they’re obviously dong something right and ‘rad’ 🙂

I think your comment would’ve been quite at home in this thread, if you didnt feel the need to point out what they were wearing had any influence on just bad manners.

Oh what a cynical life you must lead 🙂

Now, a freeride’ish bike I can get away with, as it rides uphills. But, I don’t ride just downhill, I don’t have anywhere near me to ride fully downhill, I don’t drive to be able to take me somewhere to ride fully downhill, and yet:

    I’ve wanted one forever…

    Thanks for all the replies.

It does seem that Minions are the preffered tyre. It’s not that I’ve been unhappy with them, I just don’t really have any experience of anything else. Grass greener scenario.

The only plus side to the RQs seems to be weigth and to be honest my bike isnt made to be a lightweight so I dont think it’s enough for me to purchase them this time round 🙂

Thanks for all the comments it’s greatly appreciated.

Geetee- Thanks for the response. I’m running Mavic Ex721 with the Stans Rim Tape.

I’ll have a look into the non-ust option, but judging by your comments I think I may just stick with my current set-up. Thanks for your input mate!

So the only real worthy repy to this thread was:

GW – “weight of a normal innertube Vs the weight the amount of sealant need to actually work + rim tape comes to isn’t all that different”

That’s all that was needed 🙂

Realman – The hassle was more refering to getting the tyre to seat.

    Bagstard – The Alpine is 215 x 63 if I remember correctly.

    It’s the pitch that is 200 x 57.

    GSuperstar

    36lbs if I remember correctly.

    Fox 36 Floats
    Full Shimano Saint Kit
    Ex721 Hope ProIIs
    2.5 Minions UST
    785mm Bars
    Thompson stem/post
    Diverse Dueler Titanium Shock

Rides uphill perfect. Rides downhill beyond perfect.

I’ve had EX721s on my Alpine for over a year now, I use them exactly as you say, DH and AM, and they’re still perfect.

You’ll be happy with them trust 🙂
