    Thanks for the responses.

Gary – It’s reviews like that which normally help the most, 31 lb sounds super light considering the 180s.

gee – I’ve heard a lot about the effectiveness of the stiffness. The Tracer2 frame is around 7.7lbs but I’m running a CCDB so that’ll be higher.

I don’t want to sacrifice the downs, but I think the carbon will really benefit riding up.

Oh ok well that’s positive then 🙂

So basically, get the M980 set, sell the extra, and pick up little bits to get it all working.

    SOLD.
    Thanks! 😀

Never happened to me, I’ve had a 1 Quart bottle sat opened (With lid on obviously) for best part of 11 months.

It’s not so much naivety as a refusal to allow scumbags to affect your life in any way. But it’s not just belligerence on my part. I also don’t think it is really worth modifying my behaviour because of what appears to me to be a very low risk. In over 40 years of riding bikes (and countless times leaving them on display) I’ve had one bike stolen and that was from the hallway of a student flat when I lived in Croydon.

Yes, I could take a bit of extra time to put the bike in the car and a bit more time to clean the resultant mess from the car. It’s not a huge effort. But over the years all those little extra bits of time add up to a decent chunk of time and you know what, you don’t get that time back! That’s time taken from your allotted span that you could spend doing something else.

I’m not advocating leaving biked unlocked in the middle of the street all the time. But I’m not going to criticise somebody who fancied popping into a pub for a pint and left their bike locked on a roof rack either.

It’s not that I don’t understand your opinion, I think we just must both differ on priorities. It could be that due to my bike being insured for just over £5000 that makes me feel stronger about it.

I guess the equivalent of you not wanting to waste time, is the same as me not wanting to waste the money.

My overall point would still stand, that something as simple as sitting next to a window seat could and should prevent what seems to becoming a more and more likely event of scumbags thieving.

No, you are asking to have a drink in a nice quiet pub without having to worry about some scrote nicking your bike. Stop blaming the victim. Also, it’s simply not accurate to imply that you are “asking for trouble”. In fact you can probably leave your bikes on your roof (or other rack0 a hundred times and not get them nicked (I know, I do). OK, there is a small risk that it might get nicked and you may want to insure yourself against that risk, but I’m buggered if I’m going to turn down a pint just because there is a small risk that some toe rag may half inch my bike.

This is the thing, why is it not ok to blame the victim other than he’s upsetting loss of a bike? The more people that go into a pub and leave their bike outside that end up getting thieved by scrotes, the more likely they are to return and keep doing it to others.

If you fancy a pint, sit next to a window where you can see your bike, then you can stop a theft in mid action, and possibly deter that scrote from ever trying again?

It seems naive of you to think that it’s ok to just leave expensive things lying around in the public view with the belief everything will be ok.

While I feel absolutely gutted for all those that have had them taken, and while I agree sticky fingered scrotes etc…

    They’re left on a roof bike rack…

It doesn’t matter how ‘quiet’ of a pub, if you leave a shiny expensive bike on your roof rack you’re simply asking for trouble.

For some reason I had in my head that it needed different cranks to purpose fit the BB92? I can only presume I’ve thought that while mixing up what people have said about chain rings not fitting.

I’ll only be running a single ring upfront, I suppose in that case I shouldn’t rule it out from the BB.

Yeah I’m wanting it specifically for the carbon aspect but I’ll have a look at the Scandal.

That exotic looks amazing actually, will start checking up specs etc 😀

The BB92 I’ve read a lot of bad reviews on, but more so from the fact as mentioned before, with a standard BB it’s easier to find parts 2nd hand.

    Thanks.

See I kind of want to stay away from 29ers purely based on the 2nd hand aspect of not so many parts about.

I think the Whippet is literally perfect other than the BB92 🙁

@avdave2 – That’s really my only other option, but I have a bike for mountain duties, I feel going down the C456 route means bigger forks etc, whereas the main idea behind this build is a full carbon fast commuter.

    Ohhhh decisions!

That’s what I had come into my head, was going to look up any horror stories from them.

I did notice the price 🙂 I don’t think my DMR Vaults were even that expensive. Do look pretty though.

I think these are new too:

svalgis – Perfect! Thanks for putting my mind at rest 😀 I’ll try and figure out this BB92 issue people are referring to.

GSI-MAN – Exactly! Why compromise when you don’t have to 😀

Ok, just noticed you can run 100mm forks on the c456???

Has anyone tried this? does it make the bike feel a bit weird?

Butter off with an entry level road bike – will be much more confidence inspiring than a dodgy mtb compromise.

My commute cuts through Urban, road, cycle paths and very dodgy roads, will almost be the complete opposite of confidence inspiring 🙂

It’s not so much the 200 gram difference between the c456 and whippet, it’s the fact that the 456 will need bigger forks, this again adds to weight.

I’ve ridden my Tracer 2 everywhere that I would ride, took me a while to get up the Beast at coed-y-brenin but it can be done eventually ;)So it’s not needed for future options really.

I’m of course presuming that a Whippet will be ok for daily commutes? It’s geometry etc should be ideal or have I got that wrong?

Thanks mate. One of the reasons a 2nd bike for commuting will help keep her happier for longer 🙂

I think I’m sold on your Whippet suggestion. Time to mentally build 😀

See we’re talking about weight, but I’m pretty sure however the frame gets built up it’ll be lovely commuting on compared to:

Though I do love her 🙂

Ha, that’s ok Stevo, I tend to do a lot of research before making a purchase so would probably be early January before I started my build.

I’ll keep checking as £250 would make it a lot more desirable 😉

Trying to justify the price in my head of this build for commuting, I’m pretty sure the bike would get an outing here and there at some of the trails I ride, could open up a whole new experience 😀

I agree, costly for it’s intended use. However building bikes is quite a hobby for me and I never seem to stick with cheap parts, as much as I’d intend on going down the ‘low spec’ components list, I know I’d keep searching for lighter and lighter stuff.

I see it as being an on-going project 🙂

Plus my commute is quite a fun one, through media city and salford quays so not that much road involved.

    But yes I do agree… 🙂

Stevo210 – Like an idiot, didn’t actually think of looking to see if on-one had a xc equivelant to the C456. Thanks I’ll have a look about for reviews etc 🙂

teamslug- See I have my Tacer 2 for all Enduro/FS duties, so literally want a Hardtail for speed and efficiency on going home and to work. 26lbs is a lot better than I thought though, how high spec are you running on the groupset/tyres to get it at that weight?

I’m thinking if that’s the possible weight of a 456 then the Whippet should build up pretty light?

    Thanks
    Tom

29ers don’t really put me off, other than the lack of picking up 2nd hand items on the forums 🙂

@redwoods – Thanks for that info mate, it’s very good to know as Im sure if the prices have been hiked that much through your experience then there’s obviously the chance of the pattern continuing. Will certainly take the advice on the small print, want to make sure to get this right first time 😀 Thanks we love him.

Ok, well this might just be my opinion but the ‘put the dog down and buy another’ doesnt really work for me, and I think you’re somehow missing the point of having a dog and what they offer/mean to people.

Petplan seems to be the clear winner, I’d rather pay more a month for the top cover than to be in a horrible situation with fees I might not have the money for.

Thanks for all the input 🙂

@Julian, thanks for the advice. I agree that would be a good idea the only issue would be if anything happened very early on (Touch wood it doesnt)

So the cover would be something Id feel a lot more comfortable with.

Pictures will be below as requested 😉

I’ll have a look at Petplan and M&S, yes Ive noticed this 12 month thing, definitely want to get the higher cover for extended cover.

A the photos in that other thread and those links make a bit more sense, I have just noticed that my box has 2 little brass parts in as well as the yellow blocks.

I’m think in my head I just presumed as soon as the hose came out it would squirt everywhere.

@DezB – when you say – ‘make sure the shroud nut and cover are down the caliper end of the hose’.

What does this mean? Can I do this cutting with the brakes still attached and the rotor still in between the calliper?

    GSuperstar

Oh right I didnt know I could keep the hose upright? That however may be slightly difficult to cut or am I over thinking?

Sorry, they’re the new Saint M820 front and rear.

Yeah I’ve never had a tyre blow off either. I’ve always stuck with proper UST tyres and never had a problem.

It does appear that most issues people have when running tubeless is if they’re using standard tyres instead of the intended UST versions.

That would be my first change to recommend 😀

I personally liked the E13 as it doesnt hide to much of the chainset, for instance mine is going on:

However I used to run 2×9 with a full bash, and didnt look bad, I haven’t got a proper close up of that:

If you were considering going 2 x 10 I’d have a look at the SLX range, very good for the price!

Not at all, what I’ve done with the New Saint single upfront, is buy an E13 LG1+ With Taco:

Fits onto ISCG or can be fitted to bottom brackets.

Bashrings only seem out of fashion to a lot of STW members 🙂 Depending obviously on your riding but for anything All Mountain and gravity orientated I will always recommend one, it’s almost more effort to not have one.

As for Triple chainset, I think the main view point will be its overkill these days unless you do ‘a lot’ of road roading on your mtb bike.

2 x 10 is fast becoming the standard, and many including myself have dropped down to 1 x 10.

    Hi mate

I find they size up quite large compared to their other shorts, one size up from your waist seems to be the best way to go. For me anyway 🙂
