CCDB on the five is awesome, try and ride a five with one fitted.

I had the factory RP23 (loved the propedal) but it never felt quite right.

The CCDB transformed the bike. First ride out after fitting it was a revelation, on rocky climbs I was loosing no traction at all, no noticable pedal bob. Then on the descents it’s just rediculous I was looking for bigger and bigger stuff to launch off as nothing seemed to phase it.

With a name like Rupert he is probably fed up of people riding the paths around his estate.

Nice riding though, it always look 10x worse in person than on video. I recognised a lot of those routes from the north east ridge of Ladybower I reckon.

That video is awesome… so simple, yet so effective.

Do those front neoprene things work… after being blinded by stuff getting flicked up at speed on my last few rides I’m getting tempted even if they do look a bit dodgy

That photo makes it look even worse lol

Seems very odd, you should be able to tell fairly convincingly from looking at it if that is done by a sticker.

To me it looks like a crack though.

I managed to bend a Cube frame… the replacement frame was sent under warranty very quick, and everything was swapped over within a week.

The Beast is one of the tougher decents in the Peaks, hard work on a hardtail but it depends on the line you take I guess.

We have enterned the passportes du soliel… one of our group is/was doing it on a 120mm trek fuel ex.

We finally got him in the peaks this weekend, it’s the first time he realised 120mm wasn’t going to be enough for 85km of pure ROCK in the Alps. So your making the right decision.

Buy a used Nomad though ;-)… then sell everything else and buy a hardtail for the lighter UK stuff. You will just end up riding the nomad all the time anyway.

The Wales Trip sounds a good one… it’s easy to say ‘how can you drive past snowdonia/peaks’ etc… but if you just want to turn up and ride a nice route, you can’t do that in those location, you either need to know the area, or be a decent map reader.

That LOOKS like it might be awesome, but the stupid map won’t let me look at OS level Might have to work it out when I get home.

I just uploaded the GPX file from my garmin onto GPSies… link below, that should be easier to follow.

I can possible come and show you the way.

This is a very good route too…

Although cut gate was a real boggy mess last weekend… I blame the Peaks Pootle boys for excessive traffic lol

Not sure if this link will work, but this is an awesome peaks route too… hence the name.

I just cane creek double barrel’ed and 160 forked my five for my alps trip lol

I used my edge 800 for navigation for the first time at the weekend on a 32 mile Ladybower / cutgate loop.

Really impressed with the accuracy of the off course beeps etc, makes it a different tool entirely from just a HR/route/speed/distance monitor.

I fell off hard (not the first time) yesterday, cracked 2 ribs, the garmin was 4″ down face first in gritty peat bog. Was perfectly fine. You need a screen cover though as the touch screen gets wrecked.

I’ve never been out riding in a group thinking..

‘I really could use some 160’s down here’

I have been out riding in a group thinking..

‘Oh my Buddha, my thighs and calves(moo) are on fire’

For that reason in preparation for my Alps trip this year I’ll not be buying 160’s but doing some star jumps

That’s a fair point, riding in the peaks, keeping up with the group i ride with is hard work. So in the alps doing the 85km of the Passportes Du Soliel I figured I need both 160 and lots of start jumps.

Nice bike. Doesn’t sound like he wants to share his bargain with you guys. Or looking at his spunky kitchen he payed full price and feels like you’ll hammer him for it?

Spunky Kitchen :p whats one of them? It’s a muddy kitchen now.

That bike must be some serious heft now.

Yep, a fair old weight :( the weight was the only real downside to the 160 and CCDB, and the only thing that really put a doubt in my mind.

You need to attack that Reverb cable with a knife!

I tried it shorter and the cable didn’t run right, it kept getting snagged and was a pain so went back to a long cable.

Who advised you against lyriks ? wasn’t the peps selling you the fox’s was it . Got some coil lyriks and can’t fault em to be honest.

Shops that sell both and have no really benefit in selling either. One even had the Lyriks in and not the Floats

^ +1:) ^ did you pay less than Freeborns price?

Yes, but not much to be fair… TFTuned, so kick away lol.

I didn’t want black forks so stayed white, breaks it up a bit.

Was tempted by the lyriks, both coil and dual position air, but was advised against them by two places, and my bike is heavy enough :-(

Yep… I’ll do the big chatel road gap on the last day, then if I pull it off I get a nice video and pics… If I fail, I get an extended holiday.

Signed up for chatel start on Sunday for 4 of us. Can’t wait, spending the week there afterwards.

I also have a 2012 RP23 with Kashima in the for sale section

    Cheers for the input guys.

I ordered some float 36 160mm RLCs and a coil CCDB today.

I figured I’d be gutted if I got out there and then chickened out of the chatel road gap because I was on 140s.

I’m tempted to keep the 140mm RLCs and RP23 as I don’t fancy doing the Manx end2end on a 160mm heavy beast, but they are in the for sale section incase I get the right offer.

We are registering first thing in the morning.

You can’t book camping at many places, the only one we have found that you can book with electric hook up is in chatel. Plus it’s a quoted dart point which is good.

I hated the Blur LT when I tried one.

The only bike I would be tempted to swap my Five for would be a Santacruz Nomad. Awesome bike, you could probably pick up a low spec second hand one for £2k.

The bearing warranty is only for the original owner.

There is a santa cruz demo day at Llandegla next saturday by the way. Perhaps try the nomad next to the Blur.

We got in nice and early, we are a group of 7 going from the north notts MTB nuts club.

Entered the passportes du soliel too, so got some serious training to do to complete them both on a heavy ass orange five.

They always says forks are on back order then the bike turns up I’m a week… I know 4 people that have had that happen including me.

I have one, and I love it.

However, it’s 5 months old and playing up. It’s seen maybe 300 miles of hard use in the peaks and similar rocky stuff. It’s now quite creaky, there’s more movement than there used to be and when the post is dropped and you pick the bike up by the seat the post comes out then goes back in when released… which it never used to do.

It still functions correctly (at the moment) but I dread being in the middle of nowhere with a broken seat post!

    Mansfield/Ravenshead/Nottingham.

    10 minutes from sherwood pines.
    30 minutes from the peaks.
    1hr from Cannock.
1hr 30 minutes from north Wales
    1hr 30 minutes from Dalby/ yorkshire

    So it’s not bad.

I always wanted a 600rr, then I bought a new one in 2005 and had it fo about the same time as you and loved it. it was perfect for the road, I ended up craving a bit more power and looked at all the option, I ended up going for a new fireblade.

The fact is it was just to much for the road and I enjoyed it less. I loved hammering the 600rr, to do the same on the fireblade and your over 100 constantly, sooner or later the inevitable will happen and you’ll hurt yourself or loose your license.

Keep the 600rr, give it a service, get the forks, shock and swingarm serviced and keep a future classic.

and any opportunity to post a photo of a bike :p

I love mine, but it depends what your going to use it for.

I have a friend that uses it to log speed, distance and route only, and there are alternatives to do this for much cheaper.

I use mine to keep track of my HR, riding aimlessly straight off the map and playing with the training pages.

First ride I with it I went over the bars coming down ‘the beast’ in the peaks and cracked the carbon surround. Lots of grit has got under the buttons but they still work fine and definitely put a screen protector on if you ride sandy places.

Mine only ever squeak when caked in crap… I.e the pads covered on grit and crap. If the pad is loose it could squeak too.

Mine came with organics and they were rubbish… I’ve now got sintered which I though were much better… until I rode a bike with good brakes :(

A foot in the door is a foot in the door, **** the salary, better than doing a degree then pushing trolleys around waitrose car park like a lot of graduates end up doing.

My first graduate job paid £18.5k, a pittance compared to the fee I was earning the partners, but it was valuable experience, after two years I was earning double, after a few more years it’s now a lot more.

If I was to be picky I could have waited and ended up stuck in a dead end job in a call centre earning bugger all and moaning about it on the Internet like someone posted on here the other week after doing a computing degree and not managing to get a job.

I may fancy your chances against the shop staff, but if the mechanic got involved there could/would be pain for a long while!

The shop staff seem to either be 12 or 120… The mechanic looks like a bear though… Think his name is Dale? Top bloke, sorted me out a few times now and always does a top job for bargain prices.

I can only assume his parents are complete mugs

If you live away from home for 7 months of the year what the point in having your own house if your single. I would agree with him to a certain extent.
