It’s a 2 hr walk up from my previous experience, the toure I went (can’t remember which it was) would have been very hard to ride up… much less back down.

Altohugh I should mention that I’ve decided the tyres will be for only my Alps trips this year.

So going to go double ply as it will be mainly lift assisted riding apart from the Passportes Du soliel.

I have 2.25 Advantages on at the moment, I like them but find they lack grip on dusty or hardpack mud / sand, I’ve lost the front a couple of times now ending in pain and floating ribs.

    yawn.

use your lbs if you are that precious about delivery times.

or.. if you are trying to save a few quid by ordering from an online company in ireland, using an internet ordering service, accept that once in a while there might be a few issues.

Alternatively, a business could just provide the service that they advertise, and that the consumer is paying for.

If you can’t achieve it, don’t offer it.

After reading all the bad stuff about them, I didn’t take the warning and ordered something from them for the frist time yesterday.

    3 pairs of Hope pads
    2 tyres

    All Showing as in stock.

I then paid extra for the parcelforce before 12 express delivery.

I noticed my order was still processing this morning so gave them a call, apparently my order does not exist… BUT the money has been taken and I got an confirmation email ;)

No Explanation, they will investigate and call me before the end of the day. I find taking your money, including extra for specific delivery service, then claiming the order doesn’t exist very poor service personnaly.

I probably should have listened to the warnings.

It’s ok for a blast if you want a bit of quick jumpy riding, it’s a BMX track though, not mountain biking… Perhaps I’m spoilt by the long rocky descents in the peaks

The hardest bit is turning the tight corner into it… the red line is probably faster / more fun.

Worry Gil which is also a piece of piss looks much more intimidating when stood at the top even though you can just roll it.

    On my five…

    1) 82.7kg (naked baby) probably 87ish kitted up.
    2) 500 spring
    3) Cane Creek Double Barrel
    4) 30% sag

I have the cube one, its a very tight fit but does a good job of protecting the frame… worrying to hear of another broken carbon cube.

My first cube was alloy and it bent after 6 weeks, they did ship a replacement frame to my LBS within 2 days of the LBS saying it wasn’t right though.

Went round the 22miles Dalby red route on sunday… damn that place is rough… only ever ridden it on a 160mm five previously lol… worlds apart.

    I have Mavic Razors.

They were the only shoe that was really comfy, they also got top marks in one of the recent mag reviews where they looked at 20+ shoes.

I’m generally a size 9, had to get a 10 in the Mavics. Mainl for the ratchet strap across the top of my foot.

Depressingly I had to get an XL Helly Hansen jersey the other day to… I think they do there sizing on height rather than waist size!!! But that’s another story.

I guess the main differences are the foldable or wire bead, and the single or dual ply casings.

I think I have the right rear, it just the front I have wrong.

    Old

Much beefier and better looking new…

and then a little bit more beefier…

I will just say one thing… ride both as much as you can before buying… and buy for how you ride. Mine is a heavy beast now, perfect for riding in the peak / alps, but totally overkill for many other things. You’ll get fed up of riding it otherwise.

I ended up buying a carbon hardtail, which at the moment I’ve been riding more (mainly because I keep breaking bits off the Five like rear derailures).

    Climbing Mamtor lasat weekend… temps = 20c

Bottom of the climb leading up to jacobs ladder…

The Peak district 3 days later…

The road to where I live blocked by a 5ft snow drift…

    gsp1984

Mamtor is always packed with walkers, mainly because it’s a 15 minute walk from the nearest car park.

Everywhere else was fairly quite, never completely dead though.

Peak District last weekend, temperature 20c, Cutgate / MamTor / Jacobs ladder all bones dry and running fast…

Peak District on the way home from work last night, every road closed, my actual road home blocked by 5ft snow drift, other snow drifts upto 20ft…

I think you skipped the nutrition class lol

That’s bad carbs, not good carbs, and your supposed to eat the good carbs before (sometimes during if doing endurance) ride.

Then feast up on protein after a ride a repair your shredded muscles.

I have the XT PD-M780 XC spds, i **** love them, so easy to use.

I use Mavic Razor shoes so not quite what your after, but they are supper comfy too.

I did the same, bought it thinking I could whip it off and clean it.

Still glad to have the SRAM chain so next time it snaps I can just bang a new link in quickly rather than faffing about with a pin extractor.

Seen as there is racks specifically design for carbon bikes… And the manual says not to do it… I imagine there’s logic behind it.

From having carbon kayaks, they were strong for their intended purpose, but not hugely strong when subjected to force from angles they were not designed for.

I’m going to listen to the manual though personally, you pay your money, you take your chances lol. I’m not risking it :-D

Thule 591 or 561, I have both, the five fits fine, you need the 15mm or 20mm we adapter for the 561 depending on whether you running 140 or 160

    gsp1984

The cube carbon manual says specifically not to clamp or mount cycle carriers to the carbon frame. The Thule 591 clamps to the down tube. The 561 is fork mounted and specifically for sensitive / carbon frames so I went for that.

I would say the saris clamps and rests on the top tube, so I would be reluctant to use that too.

I’ve been through one warranty claim with cube frames, if they can see any consistent marks on the frame where it’s clearly been on a cycle carrier they have advised against then it gives them an excuse to pull out of a warranty claim.

For the sake of £100 on top of a £1800 bike, may as well treat the frame as they recommend.

Just ordered a Thule 561 for carrying the carbon beast. Annoying as I have 3 x 591s but it’s not worth the risk. I’ve already bent one cube frame, I don’t want any warranty issues with the carbon one.

Tought one, depends how you ride, so you could do with trying them.

I have Hope Tech M4’s I like them a lot for fast steep techy stuff, you can drag them nicely and you can feel exactly how much power you have on.

I have Formula R1X on my XC, they react in an identical way to the Shimano XTR trail brakes… they are either on, or off… no modulation. Great for coming to a stop very quickly, from very high speeds, not so great for other stuff.

Only you can tell what you prefer.

82kg and running 125psi in the positive and negative end of the rockshox SID fork as per the recommendation on the fork sticker, sag is perfect.

How are you guys transporting your carbon frames?

I have a couple of thule 591s… the user manual specifically says not to clamp the frame though, even though the area it would clamp onto is super thick.

I think I’ll be sticking it in the back for until I can get my hands on a 561

Got my Reaction GTC SL 26″ at the weekend, done 40 miles on it this week already including 23 miles in 1hr 30min last night, I love it, so light…

I was tempted by the 29er but the difficulty in getting one, and the what felt like (to me) slow acceleration, particularly uphill put me off a little.

Very happy with my 26″er though, you cant go wrong with carbon cubes whatever the size 8)

I thought that, but then the magnet can be placed anywhere on the spoke so why does the wheel ciircumference make a different?

Also how do you calculate that with the tyre on too… I’m being thick I know

gsp1984 and Flange – out of interest, what settings are you running the CCDB at on your five?

    13st rider… 500×2.0 spring

HS Rebound 3 3/4 turns in from minimum
LS Rebound 10 clicks out from maximum
HS Compression 2 turns in from minimum
LS Compression 15 clicks out from maximum

    Running 30% sag

I’m sure it does. Some of us ride post-industrial revolution bikes though, where it’s not necessary to have a perfect shock to compensate for the frame’s very basic characteristics charming Northern industrial roots. For some people that might mean they don’t need or want a coil shock on their full sus – the benefit ratio isn’t the same. I’ve never found my bike (ASR-5) to be lacking in terms of grip going up, and whilst I agree that a coil shock would make it marginally better for hammering down rocky bridleways, In my experience of dull feeling coil shocks I’d rather save the weight. The OP’s Mondy is a bit more advanced than either of our bikes!

Same old trolling rolling  if only these hitech post indutrial revolution bikes were reliable and better than the pre war filing cabinets… I tried LOTS of bikes of the years… none of them were for where I ride.

My five with CCDB climbs better with the coil than it ever did with the RP23 Air.

Traction whilst climbing, particularly over rock etc is amazing. Mine came from TFTuned, I’ve not touched it from when TFTuned set it up for my weight and riding style. Perfect from the box.

2012 RP23 is the best air shock ever, fact.

and it’s still poop compared to the coil CCDB.

I had the 2012 Kashima RP23 on my five, there really isn’t a lot of adjustment on it and mine never felt right. Rebound, Air pressure / Sag, then propedal. It was a great shock, but not as great as the CCDB. If you can afford it, then get one.

Lets face it, if your thinking CCDB then weight probably isnt your biggest concern. My bike also climbs better with the CCDB over the RP23… there’s no pedal bob and I never lose traction like I did with the RP23.

Not sure what the CCDB air is like, not seen many reviews yet.

I looked everywhere for the reaction gtc 29er, couldnt get one :-(

My lbs have a pro coming in stock in JUNE.

I went for the reaction gtc SL 26er instead for the time being.

Buy what you think looks nice within your budget. At those price its really just fashion watches with mass produced Chinese quartz internals… They will go on forever and the only real difference is how they look.

I got addicted to buying watched once but now only have a couple of Breitling. 1) the first Swiss watch I ever bought an automatic Breitling Colt GMT, 2) Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chrono which is my diving watch so gets used for it intended purpose despite being a £4k watch.

The watch I miss the most is my Tag Monaco 24 with its floating calibre 36 automatic movement :-( bought as an investment.

Mine was perfect out of the box from TFtuned, considerably better than my 2012 factory RP23 that never felt right and alway pushed right through its travel even with silly high pressure in it.

Honestly transformed the bike and I never need to touch it.

There’s a lot of employers claiming poverty, the good proportion of which is bullshit. They are either lining the senior management pockets, or saving for a rainy day… If its the latter then fair enough, just be honest I say.

I got a 10% bonus in November… Then 4.5% payrise in January. My employer then got spooked by two people leaving and feared I would do the same so I got another 8% this month.

I don’t take it for granted though, I’m equally happy as anyone else just to have a job, I’m just fortunate that I got into an industry just at the right time that’s not stopped booming and I’m one of the few with a lot of experience.

The only dealings I’ve had with them in the past have generally been terrible.

I get called daily by headhunters fishing for information about the company I work for, and companies I have worked for. The fishing techniques are cringeworthy are sooo blatant.

Then there is those that start talking about jobs you are not qualified for but they want to put your CV anyway.

Then there is those that call weekly about various jobs they have available in Landaann… ‘I live in Nottingham, I’ve told you this every time you have called me, I dont need or want to move’

Then there is… ok I need to stop.

gsp1984 – Where you pick uo your floats? How much damage to the pocket?

I think they were about £800ish from tftuned, I’d have to check the receipt.

I just fitted some float 36 fit RLC forks on my bike.

I love them, replaced my 140mm.

The lyriks dual air are pretty cool for the 160 to 130 adjustment.

Looks sweet, I only went 160 and CCDB for my alps trips this year. Was the same set up as yours before.

I’m tempted to go xtr shifters, front and rear mechs and double crankset + cassette. What sizes have you gone for?
