Tom, I’m going to confuse you a little further because I’m 6ft 3” and have owned an XL Jeffsy 27.5 for the last couple of years and have pressed buy it now on an XL Capra 27.5

I do prefer a slightly smaller frame to be fair, so probably my preference for an XL over an XXL

Went for some Uberbike fat grips.  Bought a pair of grips, collars and bungs plus an additional spare pair of grips for £13.48 inc p&p.  uber20 gets you 20% off at the mo.

    Thanks again guys👍🏻

Very true jambalaya, I forget how demanding Alps trails are compared to UK trails. Its not as if i can bimble about on some gentle trails to get the feel of a bike before ‘going for it’!

Cheers for the replies so far guys. With the ones that hired do you have to pay for replacement brake pads?

BTW I’m 6ft 3″ and 110kg kitted up and cracked my Orange 5 in five places the last time I was in the Alps LOL!

Thanks for the replies. I didn’t realise you can purchase 5-10’s in my size as the CRC website does not list them, but I’ve seen the 5-10 website.

    Thanks for your reply BWD.

Yes I’m thinking about getting a slightly less slack hardtail, for more of a do it all kind of frame rather than something designed to be chucked down a mountain, so hence my thoughts of a pre evo carbon 456.

In answer to your suggestion of trying an alternative wheels size, I’d be looking to utilise my current 26″ (I love a bit of old school!!! Ha ha) wheelset and tapered forks.

Being as I’ve not used the blue pig for over a year I best get it on the for sale section and then have a ponder what to replace it with.

My large Alpine 160 fits into my Toyota GT86 a treat. Wheels have to be removed first though! LOL

philwarren11 – where did you get that guard/protection from on the frame of your Alpine?

My vote would be Pila if only for the 11km trail, but watch out as it likes to eat spokes!

Godzilla I’m missing chasing your fat ass down the Alps trails!!!!!!!

I didn’t know about the organic pads running cooler so cheers for that info.

I was running 203mm floating rotors front and rear, and I was really trying hard not to drag the brakes, but due to my weight I was finding I was having to break a lot more than my lighter mates, as I was naturally going much faster due to the steepness of the trails we were riding.

Cheers for the replies, think I’ll ghetto it with a split pin ;-)

I ran sintered pads and got through two sets front and rear in 5 days of riding. I boiled the fluid twice which was nice (not!) and I bled the brakes the week before we left. I know they are XC brakes, and I think I definitely need to upgrade if I return.

I’m undecided what tyres to use too. Bought some Minions front and rear and tried them out a couple of weeks ago with downhill tubes on my local trails and they felt bloody awful! These are back on the bike now but I’m definitely taking my usual choice of Chunky Monkey & Smorgasbord for swapping over, if I find I don’t get on with the Maxxis tyres.

Work concentration is none existent now!!!!

When is everyone expecting to get to TWR? We should be there looking very tired late Saturday afternoon after driving down from the Midlands.

Me (Groomy), Jaffa, Ian and Mark got together with our families last night for a pre Alps BBQ, but we soon pi$$ed everyone off with beer fueled (gay Disaranno & diet coke in Jaffa’s case) bike related conversations.

Just a couple of last minute minor jobs to do on the bikes and we are ready for our start out at 9.00pm on Friday.

    Can’t wait!!!

Andymc06 – I don’t need much of an excuse for a night out, so we’re looking forward to celebrating your birthday on the Tuesday night and then nursing a hangover on the Wednesday!!!!!

Jaffa and I have made the decision to not bike again before our trip. This mornings ride has resulted in a problem with Jaffa’s shoulder after he had an innocuous off, and I scared myself by getting a set of rollers totally wrong! Looks like I’ve got to endure my turbo trainer to get fit over the next couple of weeks – boring hell!

I’m considering one of these new superstar narrow wide rings, but I currently run a double up front. I know I should MTFU and I intend to try and run a single ring up front, but just in case I decide to go back to a double does anyone have experience of using a front mech with a narrow wide front ring? I’m guessing that shifting between granny and one these rings may be an issue.

I need a new front ring anyway so not sure whether to try one of these…….

@Godzilla – are you lads taking a ferry or going via the Eurotunnel like us?

@ekul – you’ve gotta try and get a black/green ASDA’esque top so you can look like our mate Westie’s twin bro!!! The funny thing is his nose is normal size, but we’ve taken the mick for so long he believes it himself now!

What are the weather conditions like early July in Sainte Foy? We are going with The White Room, and I was wondering what others have experienced temperature wise at that time of year. I’m guessing it’ll be t-shirt weather at all times…….

Ruggerbugger, be careful as Shimano’s sizing is a little on the small size. I’ve currently got my new size 12 AM45’s in a shoe stretcher ;-)

OP have you received your 456 yet? I’ll be interested in hearing your thoughts as I’m the same size as you and had one of the old style 456’s last year whilst my full sus went back to the manufacturer for repair. For some reason I could not get on with it and I put it down to possibly being too big.

I’m now pondering getting an 18″ 456 evo, but concerned it may be a bit on the small side……..

Good shout on the frame bearings, they’ve been in 13 months so I best have a look at them next.

Yeah new mounting kit to replace the alloy worn out top hats.

Can I add my name to the broken collar bone list……. I did a combination of burntsandwich & mrtrotter as I got a jump very wrong and hit a tree over Cannock Chase. My appointment at the fracture clinic is tomorrow too. What are the ‘average’ recovery times for this kind of break?
