That’s a LOT of tyre for the back!

yeah it is a lot of meat but there’s also a lot of me and a lot of rocks and waterbars and if there’s another hard obstacle on the trail I’ll usually ride into it rather than around or over……

I got the Minion 29 2.3 DHR2 Double Down from Acycles for £55.

They seem like the best bet at the minute thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to give your feedback ehrob and sideshow despite the differences!

The EXO versions just do not hold up for me. I have also been thinking about the double down but I’m finding it difficult to find them for sale in 29er in the minion patterns? Might just be that there are so many Maxxis codes and abbreviations that the search engines are struggling…..

Have also seen that Hutchinson do a ‘Hardskin’ tyre that’s supposed to be similar to double down from Maxxis but not really sure what their go to rear tyre is!

Went with Pedal Cover in the end.

Couple of things that were raised to me by various insurers on the phone:
Some companies older policies covered bikes for unlimited value but now many have a £500/1000 limit unless specified – advisors reckon many folk don’t really fully check it after year 1 so just assume they still have the same level of cover if they auto renew.

Some companies also only cover up to £3/4/5K for entire garage contents so if you have a few bikes, a mower, strimmer, washer, drills, tools etc you might be well short. Again advisors reckon that some folk never check that, particularly if they auto renew.

    Just FYI, might help someone.

Anyone else have contents insurance plus bikes specified? Seems more difficult/worse vales now that I am renting a property rather than owning!

The short levers are much better than the standard longer levers on my wifes MT2’s IMO.

I think they are slightly more basic versions of the MT5/4 but it looks to me that the difference is mainly cosmetic. IMO the MT Trail Sport are better as they come with the short lever pre installed whereas its an optional, expensive, retro fit upgrade on the MT5/4.

I run 203mm front and 180mm rear. For reference I’m well over 100kg and ride a mix of trail centres, ‘enduro’ style trails and Cairngorm mountain tracks.

If the lever is flexing I’m not noticing but I’ve never really noticed brake lever flex before so maybe I’m just not sensitive to it. I will say it feels like a broader lever than Shimano which seems to suit my hands.

My last brakes were Zee and before that were Saint. These are as powerful as either of those so far and as mentioned above I feel they are a good value brake.

I use them. Really impressed. Like the shorter lever and seems to be plenty of power. Think they are very good for the price.

slimjim78 – I have the Magura MT Trail Sport which has one MT5 calliper and one MT4 calliper I think. Just had them for a few rides but they are good so far – powerful, quiet and I like the lever shape (I have the shorter lever).

I don’t think the site has been updated with the new models yet has it? For instance I cant see the S150 29er?

I just bought a new husqvarna which though over your budget is a really good mower. Plastic deck so no corrosion, ultra easy to start, work and manoeuvre etc

Thanks Bob – I don’t have a Garmin to use unfortunately but I have now found what I think to be the full route on Strava and also on Trailforks.

I’m not sure if I can use the IPhone as a SatNav/Garmin when Im there but it seems like common sense might get me part of the way round!

Thanks gelert- I’d seen the alpinestars too. How do they size up? I got the impression they might have been closer to a waterproof trouser than some of the others?

Ironically after looking at his Instagram etc I got curious about the bike he’s riding, the Focus Jam 29er. Was never really on my radar before so maybe it’s not all bad for Focus…..

Think it’s 400 riders so there’ll no doubt be a mix of fitness. Although I do believe it is a big day in the hills from what I’ve heard.

I have always been near the bottom/back at races I’ve done but usually there’s some good laughs at the back!

Re: Yohan Barelli – What or who was cheating at EWS France?

Sorry to divert mid thread but the Joe Barnes thing – its the first time I have heard about it but am I understanding correctly:
    He was in a race,
The course at a certain point was not taped,
His intention was to win/go as fast as possible,
He choose the fastest ‘line’ he could see at the untaped point,
That line happened to be a path/forest road etc,
anywhere there was tape he followed the ‘course’,
He’s then accused of cheating for not following the ‘trail’ or ‘line’ it’s assumed he would take despite the fact that there was no clearly marked ‘course’ at that point?

Or did he intentionally divert through/over/around a taped section of course and ride down a road/path/forest track?

Wouldn’t be happy with paying £130 for that myself, seems a big cost for what you’ve got.

Renton I might be wrong but pretty sure a longer fork or angleset on their own will both reduce reach but if you run them both together then the loss is minimised. At least that’s what some of the online geometry calculators showed for my bike. I’ve gone and done it now anyway….

No idea about lockout but I use the Fox 34. Just recently had them bumped up in travel from 130mm to 140mm. Good forks and can handle my hefty weight and terrible riding….

I’m about 120kg with my pack. Ridden ARC27 rims on dt Swiss 350 hubs for the last 2 years with no problems on my 29er. I’m not lightning fast but I am heavy, clumsy, pick poor lines and ride a lot of rocks and hit many a water bar. Think you’ll always hear more from the few who’ve had a problem than the majority who’ve fitted them and forgot as they just do the job! There’s not many ‘bad’ rims out there if you choose wisely for your riding I think so just comes down to budget, availability and personal preference.

I am not really fan of the ‘look’ of Whyte full suss bikes in general but think if they offered this in black or something more stealth rather than the usual yellow or orange it’d be a winner!
