basquemtb? I’ve not been but I saw on their website that they offer a winter package.

The guys from Pedals in Edinburgh have ridden them and either have them in or are expecting them very soon I think – James sometimes posts here so maybe he will add some thoughts.

Yeah I’ll take strong sidewalls all day long. Are they any good in the winter slop?

What’s the clearance like in these? Would 27.5+ wheels/tyres work?

No experience of the fork but the frame looks interesting. There seems to be a raw look option which is always good imo!

If not the DVO fork what other options are about?

A lot of my winter will be mucky and rooty as mentioned above hence going for the baron on front. I did consider it on the rear too and Trail King also on my radar now too. Think an Airshot might be useful too…

Chiefgroove – its the second gen MK. Picked it up cheap after reading a few positive posts/reviews. Trail King also on my list to try. Are you running it front and rear? Any good as a front?

Greyspoke – I’ve not formally measures it but it looks tall. I’ve gone 2.4 baron and MK on a Smuggler and Fox 34 fork with no worries.

Chaka – for me the baron is better as I ride a lot of muddy roots and it’s better than the Mary there imo. It looks more hardwearing too and certainly seems tough. Mary probably better on trail centres and slick rock like Laggan.

Just an update for anyone else curious about this tyre. I bought one which replaced a Minion DHF on the front of my 29er.

Lots better in muddy sloppy conditions, noticeably better on roots than anything else I’ve ever used. Also been totally fine on dry kitty litter trail centre rides and rocky routes.

Was a bit harder to mount tubeless than Maxxis/Specialized and noticeably stiff carcass when taking it out of wrapper but I’m hoping that just=toughness! Also despite regular use it looks like it has barely worn at all so although expensive looks like it’ll be long lasting too!

About to pair it with a Mountain King on the rear as I have tyre brand matching OCD…

Thanks guys, looks like the 2.5 WT is an option for me too then!

Encountered this same problem when swapping my friends tyres last night. Quick jiggle of the wheel seemed to sort it out, maybe sealant filled the tears or damage to tape? Hopefully he doesn’t find the tyres flat next time he goes for a ride….

I’m also looking at the 2.5WT 29er and wondering if there’ll be room in a Fox 34 fork….

I did find it a bit more draggy compared to DHR11 but really not much in it TBH. Bead wasn’t a problem for me on ARC27 rims.

I’m not sure if sketchy means loose and wild or wet and sloppy but it was a decent all rounder – not the fastest, not the grippiest and not the slowest but it was decent all round and fairly sturdy in the tough casing. Overall I prefer the DHR11 but the WTB is available for less than half the price so in that regard it is very favourable!

Thanks for all the links and pointers.

At the moment we are looking for something second hand which is leading me to Pashley as I think I can pick one up for a decent price locally.

Seem to be a few of the other brands about too but mostly down south for collection/pick up only!

Tall_martin how tall are you and what were you riding before for comparison?

Slight aside but for those of you using CO2 canisters have you got any recommendations? I’ve never had/used one but reckon they’d be handy in certain scenarios….

I think the evil issues were mainly a few years back – seem to be plenty of owners of recent bikes that are totally happy and had no problems.

Shorty a poor on roots, Baron great on roots, MM OK on roots:
Shorty great in Mud, Baron Good in Mud, MM OK in Mud:
Shorty poor on hardback/trail centre, Baron OK, MM good:
    seems to be the consensus?

Kona Process 153 might be one to look at? Granted it’s not the lightest Enduro bike out there but I believe they are very tough and the geometry should be alright for some DH stuff

Maxxis usually the easiest to get on in my experience. Just had a battle with a Continental though…..

Thanks for the posts guys. I realise that it would be a very expensive trip and that would be one of the reasons its a more long term aim for me for a year or 2 down the line. Heli biking would obviously have to be included as it seems one of the must do things!

    What bike are they for?

I run 34’s at 140mm at the moment. Some folk have said that 36’s are the be all and end all but 34’s have never let me down, never noticed any flex (currently over 100kg with pack….) I’ve always wanted 36’s though as I think they just look ‘right’ and they’d handle absolutely anything I could throw at them!

Just put on a Continental Der Baron projekt which is similar to Shorty in aim I think. Was pretty good on all surfaces this morning.

if it were Maxxis I’d probably look at the DHR11 on the from as a compromise.

First ride with the Mudhugger Shorty tonight in very wet conditions and I was impressed. Did a good job.

Whyte S150 also uses a reduced offset fork. Think the Giant Reign mentioned earlier also uses an unusual offset fork as standard. Mondraker also have the long TT and short short stems.

Geometron couldn’t really be considered normal either despite the facet it uses ‘standard’ components.

Seems like we are in a time of experimentation/evolution and some of the things like Transitions SBG and the Geometron concept are probably playing to the big guys who’ve felt cramped for years?
