This was the first event of this kind I have attended, so can’t make any comparisons. But here’s my thoughts:

Some great downhill routes were missed in preference for roads. After grinding away up a boggy climb only to find a paved road to roll down was a little disappointing.

    Too much fireroad!

Anyone who camped onsite will no doubt have experienced the ‘Toilets from Hell’ *shudders*

Apart from that, I really enjoyed the day. The staff were all very helpful even though they were clearly rushed off their feet most of the time.

    I’m doing it too.

Never done any long distance riding before, so just finishing will be a real achievement.

I expect it’ll take me at least 3 days 😳

You could try patching it with glueless puncture repair patch.

I did this to a similar sized hole a few months ago and I haven’t died yet.

    Doesn’t anyone read the magazine?

Agree with Bushwacked. Seems to me that the recent press coverage has made the public and politicians a lot more aware of mountain biking and our general access issues.

    I’m 5’10”, 32 inside leg and ride an 18″ with a 70mm stem.

Fits me just right, although I fancy a shorter stem.

I grabbed some Slime tubes in a sale last year to stick on my pub bike.

As others have already mentioned they are heavy, but I have never been let down by them in nearly 10 months of use.

Mr Farmer has recently cut all his hedges, covering the paths in thorns and all sorts and even that hasn’t popped them!

Pretty much a fit and forget item IMHO.

    Doodlebug,

Another pub which is further down towards Newmarket is the Tharp Arms in Chippenham: http://www.thetharparms.com

It might be less of a detour for you if you are heading back on the A14.

Food is typical pub grub stylee, but the beers are always well kept.

There’s the Plough at Icklingham, about 7 miles away from Elveden.

Visited last year and the food and beer were both very good.

Biggest news on the Ramblers website right now is their ‘fight for footpaths’ campaign with a nice little form you can fill in.

One of the form requirements asks you to fill in where you ‘walked’ – Maybe we should say we cycled and make their brains explode…

Thetford. Loads of marked trails and off-piste stuff to explore, flat as you can get but still plenty of fun.

Echo Legoman’s advice about the QR.

Had the same problem, always thought it was bearings but I tightened the rear QR up as tight as it would go and the creaking went away.

I’ve recently returned to the Newmarket area, so it would be great to meet up with some local(ish) riders.

    Cheers,
    Jimi
