Moved up a group for today’s club ride. My normal group normally meander around sociably at about 13-15mph. Today was 76 miles at just short of 17mph. Happy with that

17mph average over that distance is good going.

12mph is fine if thats the terrain you were riding in that pic

Bit of a out and back 50 miler for me yesterday. Out had the tailwind, back the (more or less) headwind. 4800ft climbing at an av of 20.3. Happy with that, considering I’ve put 3-4kgs on (back upto 80kg) since the fred Whitton.

Sounds strange but take it for a ride in the car! There is a tiny bore coil of copper pipe that heads for the stat this sometimes gets blocked and causes stat malfunction. The vibration of the car is often enough to free it. Alternatively give it and other tubing a good rattle with the handle of a screwdriver or the like.

Thanks daftvader, i would like to try a RW34 stainless fillet knife sometime but not so easy to whip one up, need a pre treated blank or send it away for liquid nitrogen treatment. Nothing wrong with O1 carbon steel, Post up yours when you get it finished.

In fact most the stuff i use is high carbon scrap, leaf spring and the like- such as here: LINK[/url]

If it gets me better at building wheels, well worth it.

Simple enough and quite satisfying to build your own, plenty of info on the internet. I have done quite a few, just true them up/ dish them on the frame, use my thumb or a plastic handle pinched against the frame to find the high/ low spots. No need for a fancy jig if your are just doing the occasional wheel build.

New spokes and nipples also mount up the cost, if you can get secondhand complete wheels and change the hubs to what you want would be more cost effective.

Yet another question – is there any reason I couldn’t lace up some 24″ bmx rims for mtb use? There are some cheapish sun ringle rims on ebay which don’t seem spectacularly heavy compared to crests, although they are 36h.

Don’t see why not, you could put in some decent disc hubs of your choice then. Be a bit of investment in time though.

And I’ll need a 24″ disc front wheel
