ooh – I started having a look at these recently too. I'm too chicken to do much so far, can't decide if now is the right time for me

Are you using Plenty of Fish or one of the ones you have to pay for?

Strikes me its a pretty brutal game and a very thick skin is required

    i have had both

I prefer hope just because the whole "cup n cone" think is a pain (evan when you do know how to do it properly).

Also hope hubs can easily be converted to fit maxles etc

But most importantly hope come in nice colours and make a lovely noise

I used to have 100mm rebas on my soul, now have 100mm durins

They are very nice – easy to set-up, lighter than the rebas and the double arch feels pretty stiff.

The look nicer (in white) than the old grey rebas too

Where's all the heat going to go? Are you planning on sitting this thing on a kitchen table. Proper burners give off huge amounts of heat, 5KW plus and I'd not be happy to see one anywhere near kitchen cupboards. Maybe it could be OK sat on top of your electric cooker with a steel hood above.

which is why I'm thinking an outdoor one might be better, doesn't seem like anyone on STW has one, or has used one though.

Our (AEG) 5-ring gas hob sits over a standard 600mm built-in oven.

oh and its not evan that big – one of those narrow ones 500 or 550mm I think

Bit anoying – as its a nice new kitchen, and space isn't particularly limited so I can't work out why the current owner didn't spec a full size oven. But if I were to get one I would need to rip out a cupboard – which would then have knock on effect on flooring etc. I'm going to see if I can live with it first. If it really hacks me off I will need to save up and get it sorted properly (an probably would go for a range).

If it makes you feel better, all our friends have range cookers but we can't get one to fit so I do feel your pain.

starting to think this should have gone on the middle class angst thread from a few days ago

druidh – I am pleased for you 🙂

but my new cooker does not – and the space isn;t really big enough to take the kind of cookers that have those 😐

back in the 80s (or maybe early 90s) my local tory MP was running late for a plane he was due to catch.

He got to the airport – but had missed last call for the flight.

His response was to announce he had a bomb in his bag – working on the assumption that this would prevent any flights taking off and buy him enough time to board the plane.

He got no more than a few harsh words for doing this – certainly no criminal record

Pizza Express is great – if you are in a strange town and no local knowledge you can always go and get a pretty decent meal – often in nice surroundings (the one in Oxford is particularly nice)

kids like it too – and no horrible doughy nonsense like pizza hut etc

I could go for a sloppy Giuseppe right now

if he's a builder just ask him to sort it – (with a door/ window. matching brick/ render – whatever you want) as a condition of your offer

thats what I would do – why bother trying to DIY when you've got a builder right there who could be persuaded to do it for free (to enable him to sell his house)

my kids school is still doing them

I've noticed once the sats are done the teachers seem to give up teaching – for weeks they seem to be watching videos and having long play times (in my day that would just be the last day of term)

I don't mind kids having a bit of fun though – childhood should be fun, it would just be better if schools could concentrate on a balance of work and fun activities through the whole year – rather than just having a big build up to SATs

I always just tell my kids not to worry – that its a measure of the school and not them. They are too young to be getting stressed about exams

that 60 pounds includes the cost of a new box if you need one

The HD failed on my Sky+ box- and they just gave me a new one at no additional cost (the guy who came round had one in his van)

Some will tell you that if you threaten to cancel they might evan waive the 60 pounds – could call your bluff though

They won't let you just cancel and re-join – unless you have someone else in the house (flatmate / girlfriend) with a different surname who could pretend to be the new owner of the house

SMB is already turned on – with no joy

I presume I should just be looking for the IP address my router says the PC is on?

haven't tried FTP yet – will give that a go but would be good to get things working "properly" if i can

I have a mac/ ipod touch and my work PC all running off a netgear router – the work PC connects via a cable though

I did have problems with the Mac loosing its connection and getting an error message when run at the same time as the PC and/ or ipod

I solved this problem by setting up the router to recognise the Mac and always assign it the same IP every time – and never give that IP address to any other device. No problems since then

cats do love their owners – mine are like babies sometimes with me (and there is plenty of food in the bowel so they are not looking to get fed)

I'm moving out soon (separating from wife) – I'm going to miss those little buggers 😥

That's just cruelty for an animal that is used to having a large territory and walking about in it.
I agree – cats love stalking around outside.

if you look on US cat forums (I was searching for advice on a cat issue I had at the time) they are very down on cats being allowed out – they regard it as being cruel and dangerous for the cat, and seem to spend loads building runs and stuff for them

    very odd

the last straw for me was the bit when the Indie's son started swinging through the trees on vines with a load of monkeys like tarzan/ spiderman

All done via CGI – and completely wrong for the films. In the originals everything on screen was done by a real person. Obviously those films are not true to life but the new one just is completely wrong

    hmmm

I was watching Indianna Jones 4 the other night (I gave up cos it was rubbish and the DVD was skipping)

But I'm sure there was a bit where Indy is in his study with Jim Broadbent -and says something like that whilst looking at photos of Sean Connery and Denholm Elliott – who have both died since the last film

Not very high brow – I'm sure you are thinking of a much better film!

he will get the most out of his practice with some kind of headphone based solution that allows him to play along with something

I use a Line 6 POD, plugged into my Mac running garage band. I can then drag any track I like from itunes into Garage band and play along with it.

IMO you make far more progress doing this – learning how to play things by ear and playing along in time rather then just thrashing about by yourself on a super loud amp.

When I was his age and just learning none of this technology existed – and I certainly wasn't alowed to play at any kind of volume. I remember having everything very quiet – playing along with tapes on my ghetto blaster.

I'm still learning and I am fairly rubbish

    But

it helped me to practice on a high curb

front wheel up (by shifting weight back and pushing forward on pedals)

then let the front wheel touch the top of the curb

then quickly shift weight forward, and push bars forward whilst unweighting your feet (point toes down to help with this)

if you are doing it right your back wheel lifts smoothly onto the curb

do this quicker and quicker – then move on to hopping small bits of wood etc. The change now is that you are trying to lift the back wheel whilst your front wheel is in mid air and not sitting on a curb

I'm using squirt on all the geared bikes –

First application you degrease the chain (I put the chain in a jam jar full of white spirit). Dry it then apply squirt. Leave to dry then apply again

After that you only need to apply the lube once every application.

Now I always remove the chain when washing the rest of the bike – then apply fresh lube to the dry chain.

Its good stuff – although in the depths of winter I still prefer finish line wet on the single speed. I hate the stuff on a geared bike as it makes such a mess of cassette and jockey wheels, but it really lasts on a single speed, even in the worst rain and mud

my mac works better if I have the router set to give it a "reserved" IP address – otherwise it would clash with my work laptop/ iPod touch

mine has been good for the last couple of years – buts its started dropping down to virtually nothing during busy periods in the evenings which can be annoying.

I'm moving soon though, so will put up with it till then – when I might give Virgin a go if its available (or maybe 02)

try a new filter thing before you do anything else (the widgit that plugs in between your router and phone line socket) – doing this has fixed issues like you describe for me before
