My Cambridge Audio A5 has the AUX/ PHONO input but no actual pre amp
The manual confirmed this was the case when I dug it out

grievoustimFree Memberyes to company discounts
I get a discount on selected products direct from apple – but its a bit patchy and limited
Just realised that I can also get 10% off John Lewis vouchers – which = 10% off apple things bought at John Lewis
grievoustimFree MemberI had this problem
And started using a biological liquid instead of non- bio
smells were then gone
I now mix them up – use non-bio most of the time with the occasional biological to keep they nasties at bay
grievoustimFree Member2nd Hand Led Zepplin vinyl is expensive these days as there is a high demand for it from collectors
The fact you buy a reissue for less is neither here nor there – 1st pressings are more valuable because collectors like having them – for similar reasons as book collectors like 1st edition hardbacks better than a cheap paperback
If you just want a record to listen to OP just get the reissue copy. The problem with Oxfam starting to charge “2nd hand record shop” prices for old vinyl is the people that volunteer there don’t seem to take the condition of the vinyl and the sleeve into account. They are charging A+/ A+ prices for non mint vinyl
grievoustimFree MemberChekov’s gun isn’t a bad thing, or bad writing –
“Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it’s not going to be fired, it shouldn’t be hanging there.
—?Anton Chekhov” (stolen from Wiki)
The trick is to not make the act 1 set-up tooo obvious – but yes once you are aware of principals like this it’s harder for a story to suprise you
I’ve done a fair amount of study on film screenplays. I now always know if a (non arthouse) hollywood film will have a happy or sad ending.
End of ACT 2 = happy . End of Act 3 = SAD
End of ACT 1= SAD, then End of ACT 3 = happy
grievoustimFree Memberlove the stooshie
Mine is going to be orange
did you ask them to spray the stem – or did they just do that as standard
grievoustimFree MemberI’ve got a Shand Stooshie on order- lighter version of the Stoater with carbon forks
grievoustimFree Membera strap?
picks – if she wants to play with a pick. Nice to have the option to try it
Tuner – these days you can just use a free smartphone app.
That’s it really – you can get bass fx pedals and stuff, but they are very far from essential, especially for a beginner
You are correct in saying you should get a bass specific amp.
grievoustimFree Memberi’ve still got my sony portable one and a few discs
The music player on my phone is annoying me so much at the moment I’m considering digging it out next time I go for a solo ride
grievoustimFree Membernot good – I was riding there yesterday with my kids
I’m going to have to go back to riding in front of them – which as a shame as I generally like to let them go first
grievoustimFree MemberI spin the cranks backwards when lubing my chain – I assumed everyone did?
My old soul would drop the chain when doing this with the chain on the largest sprocket (it was 1×9 with a chain keeper thing). Solution was to switch to the 2nd largest sprocket
grievoustimFree MemberThe switch was a call back/ call forward to the B&W flash forward at the start.
Jimmy now – can’t resist disobeying the sign and flickung the switch, consequences be damned
Future Jimmy would rather sit in the bin room all night then risk the consequences of disobeying a sign
grievoustimFree MemberI saw him doing a hypnotism show to a few dozen people in ’96 in my halls of residence – I went believing hypnotism was complete rubbish and left utterly astounded at what I’d seen. He hypnotised a sceptical friend of mine to be unable to see Derren and had him cowering in terror that a chair was levitating and flying at him (that Derren was just picking up and swinging around).
no, your Friend is just suggestible. I’m guessing Derren didn’t have your friend cowering in fear straight off the bat did he?
Stage hypnotism works by ramping up the crazy antics in small degrees. When I took part we were all told we were “driving a car” or “hot”. We all went through the motions. At no point did the hypnotist say “only act like this if you are truly under my spell and believe this to be real”I got tapped on the head to leave the stage early on – guess I wasn’t getting into the spirit enough. But those that stay get asked to do more and more silly things. By then end someone thought he was a monkey etc. But by then they are invested in it – they can’t suddenly step out of the act and say “actually I’m not hypnotised and I’m not doing that” – they are never given the option, and they would look like an idiot in front of the audience if they did.
If you tried to run a hypnotism show with people who had never seen one – and had no idea what hypnotism is supposed to be – it wouldn’t work
grievoustimFree MemberThat’s hardly a revalation, it is explicitly stated in the first line of his Wikipedia page.
He says at the start of every show that it’s basically all trickery of various types and that he has no “powers
but this is thew issue with him – he claims to be using his mind to manipulate people, when really he is doing something else. It’s misdirection
I lost all respect for him when he claimed to predict the balls drawn in the national lottery. It was blatantly obvious he was using a split screen and a slight time delay. Literally anyone could have done it
The people who take part in his shows are all stooges – they know they are in a show, and they know they are expected to play along – even if no one explicitly says this to them. Its works the same way as a stage hypnotist act. Early in the show there are lots of people on the stage (I was once one of those people) – as the show goes on, and the action required gets more outrageous, people who aren’t playing along to the right degree are wheedled out. DB does the same thing – except those people who are rejected early on do not get shown on TV
grievoustimFree MemberGiggling Squid as above is great
Curry Leaf Cafe for really good south Indian style food, also in the Lanes (have good beer too). Thus is my favorite really. It’s fairly small and busy so book
Pompoko for cheap and cheerful cafe style Japanese
The Coal Shed for steak etc (also have fish for the wife)
The New ClubgrievoustimFree MemberI use the GI ones – no solution involved.
Cut them in half as they are too long really out of the packet
Used them a fair few times – both with me and giving them to other people out on the trail. I’ve only had one occasion so far when the hole was too big and i needed to put a tube in (of course this occasion was when it was snowing)
having said that i might try the weldtite kit next time i need some
grievoustimFree Memberah that is a pain.
I waited a similar amount of time for mine, and am now nursing a broken wrist
glass half full – at least you can still ride a bike
grievoustimFree Membercan you update the thread when they respond?
no sign of loosening on my cranks – but would be good to know what they say
grievoustimFree MemberDisclaimer – this is my first press fit BB and I’ve not had the cranks off, could be a couple of thin metal spacers in there but hard to tell. Anyway you should be able to compare the photo with your bike.
grievoustimFree MemberNo- I’m a bit broken at the moment so hard to look too close but I don’t see anything that looks like a spacer

If you aren’t are saving some weight going tubeless you are where doing it wrong
FTFYWhy? Where is the weight coming from? And don’t say “heavier tyres”. You pick a tyre that’s tough enough for where you ride, its irrelevant if your tubeless or not
grievoustimFree MemberNEWSFLASH
ok – Ive found the envelope I wrote the weights down on
out of box, no pedals = 28.6 lbs
with pedals = 29.3 lbstubeless = 28.7 lbs (with a bottle cage added too) – so 0.6lb saved, or approx 270g.
all this stuff about heavier tyres is a red herring IMO. If your tyres are too light and delicate they are too light and delicate. I’m not sure what being tubeless or not has to do with it, they will get torn either way
grievoustimFree MemberOf course it saves weight going tubeless!
My Spectral recently arrived – with tubes fitted.I don’t have exact weights to hand but …
Out of the box without pedals it weighed 28. something pounds
With pedals it weighed 29. a bit pounds
I removed the (very lightweight) tubes it came with, added some valves (the wheels already had tubeless tape fitted, but I needed an extra layer on the back to get the tyre to inflate), fitted valves and added 80ml of sealant per wheel
The tyres were are the same TR Maxxis the bike came with
The bike now weighs 28. something
weight saved . If you aren’t saving some weight going tubeless you are doing it wrong
grievoustimFree MemberI took delivery of a spectral 7ex a few weeks ago and am very happy with it
I’m 5’11, got a medium, and am very happy with how the sizings turned out.
Never ridden the bigger bike, but unless you are doing proper big drops I think you will find the spectral to be more than enough bike
grievoustimFree MemberI took gas canister things when I went a couple of years ago- don’t remember anyone saying I couldnt\
In theory you could have a friend wait by the gate with some stuff – bit of a trek though. You can catch the shuttle bus back to the car but its a bit of a pain. Much easier to limit yourself to kit you can carry (some sort of fold away trolley to help you lug more stuff would be good though)
grievoustimFree MemberEven Macca keeps bemoaning that he has to pay to perform his own songs – but their not his songs any more.
He lost the rights to the Beatles publishing way back during all the legal wranglings around the Beatles break-up/ early contracts etc
He has tried to buy back the rights.
When he realised how much music publishing is worth he invested in it heavily – he bought the rights to the musical “Annie” for example. Much of his fortune is from theses investments. He then advised Michael Jackson to invest in music publishing rights. Jackson took his advice to heart and out bid Paul on the rights to the Beatles publishing (Paul was trying to buy the rights back). They had a bit of a falling out because of that!
grievoustimFree MemberYes. I ordered that modal 2 or 3 months ago.
My delivery is in June – it’s not changed since I ordered
grievoustimFree MemberMy 11 year old is on a 14″ cotic bfe frame (sold cheap by cotic due to being old stock and having a bent mech hanger)
Wheels forks etc are hand me downs from my old 26″ bikes. New deore double groupset.
My older daughters are on a 14″ inbred and 16″ charge respectively – again built up with hand me down bits

grievoustim, what do you mean by “access to taps”?
My local riding is on the South Downs – lots of public taps around for the use of walkers and riders
If Im doing a long ride elsewhere – and I can’t rely on knowing where a tap, cafe or garage or whatever is to fill up my bottle I will take a camelback (or maybe just an extra bottle). I don;t really like riding with a pack on though
grievoustimFree MemberI have a spare tube strapped to my frame (for emergencies as tubeless)
Bottle on framein pockets
pump, food, gilet or waterproof if needed, phone
in a small plastic bag/ held together with a rubber band
multi tool, tyre lever, spare links, tubeless anchovies, tyre boot, instant patchesI only carry a pack if I’m going out for a long one and know I won’t have access to taps. If I’m riding locally I know where all the taps are anyway
grievoustimFree MemberOn my soul(before switching to 29) I had an 11-32 cassette and a 32t chainring
on my Solaris I have an 11-36 cassette – and a 32t chainring
grievoustimFree MemberMelancholia is good
It’s slow, very slow – it’s basically a film about depression
But it’s not “shocking” like all the other LVT films – of the ones I’ve seen I enjoyed it the most
grievoustimFree MemberBlue Ruin just got put on there – decent revenge movie that came out last year
I like the Louis CK, Marc Maron and Bill Burr stand up stuff on there
Sure there is lots more but I have a terrible memory
grievoustimFree MemberI know what you mean
I don’t really get on with spotify for this reason. I’ve only used the free version on my laptop (it’s not linked to the hifi or anything). I sometimes use it to preview music before buying a physical copy.
When I’ve tried to use it just as background music whilst working or whatever – I find the choice overwhelming. You’re always looking to move onto something else.
I just seem to enjoy music more if its “my” record. Like you say you listen to it more, get to know it better. Give it more of a chancegrievoustimFree Memberare you using a tube?
I’ve had problems in the past fully mounting schwalbe tyres onto Stan’s rims when there is a tube in. the problem goes away if you are running tubeless
As mentioned above – higher pressure and/ or some lube will sort the problem
grievoustimFree MemberI am also at J Mascis in Brighton tonight
Got Jesus and Mary Chain and War on Drugs in Feb at Brighton dome
Need to get some more sorted now – want to see Ex Hex, but not a great night for me
grievoustimFree MemberMis read the OP and thought the son had given a hand me down iPad to his own wife. That seems a bit tight if he’s keeping the new one for himself
But
A 2nd hand iPad as a gift to mum/ step mum. Seems pretty generous. Does the op know how much a new iPad costs?
grievoustimFree MemberMy LRS for new records is Resident records
They are in brighton but do mail order too and have a lovely website
But worth supporting your local independent record shop if you are lucky enough to have a decent one nearby. Still prefer buying new and 2nd hand records in a shop to online
