    Warm milk with malt extract.

I am enjoying this. Mrs g is at the count as she is the local PC agent. Our seat is safe Labour though.

Or where you make such a difference that someone feels you deserve to be nominated.

    Just for balance.

That is your second best bet.

If you really want a K, your best bet is to try to get a top job where it comes automatically.  Like becoming the DPP, or a senior civil servant.

I approve of this thread.  Better than starting a whole thread under the changed name.

Both my kids are way better at being adults than I was at their age.

And my distant cousin from Australia who has turned into a very likeable and  impressive young man.  His dad, now sadly deceased, was my favourite from that branch of the family who obviously got the main bit of being a parent right, passing on good values.  Good on you mate, wherever you are.  So I am taking it upon myself to feel proud on his behalf.

Surely not enough time for the cons to do it according to their constitution, and I imagine party affiliations on ballot sheets are fixed now also.

I guess there could be some kind of mutual love-in pact where one candidate in a seat says “please vote for the other guy”. But enforcing that on the ground might be tricky.

Many years ago I saw a wheelbarrow used for a disabled dog. It’s front end worked so sometimes it would be half in, trotting away with the front paws. Smallish wheelbarrow largish dog. Looked to be enjoying life.

I have also seen a CAT in a rucksack. The rucksack had a window with a hole in it which was big enough for the cat to squeeze through, but it seemed happy enough sitting there.

My dad got called up towards the end of the war and, because he had some exams, got assigned to train as a glider pilot for the then planned raids. But he buggered his knee playing centre half for one part of the army against another part so never flew or fought. Ended up doing National Service. His sister worked at RAF Knockholt, which listened for the German encoded transmissions which were sent on to Bletchley Park for decoding.

Of course, the tax rate for someone earning £50001 is going to be almost the same as that for the person on £49999, with just £1 charged at the higher rate.

“I’m sure I heard somewhere that there’s almost an ‘EU English’ dialect”

There is an international English. It is neither US nor UK English, but what a large community of people (overseas students at US or UK Universities, people who want to get on in professional careers or academia etc) speak. I have experienced it when teaching diverse groups of overseas students they clearly understood each other better than I undetstood them.

Rishi doesn’t appear to have strong advisers. He needs a Malcolm Tucker style figure to say “you’re staying here you **** idiot”.

That photo of Starmer with Zelensky is damaging. It looks like foreign leaders are now proceeding on the basis that Starmer is the man to speak to (this is probably true, but the public impression is not necessarily the same). Aside from the basic issue of respect, surely it was clear that if Starmer was sticking around, Rishi needed to be seen as well?

He is just not good at politics – and neither are those around him.

@jimmy it is not really a final diagnosis. The diagnoses go on and on, as do the treatments that follow. Of course eventually one of them will, with hindsight, turn out to have been the final one. Either the cancer will get you, or meybe an oncoming bus or something.

Well Mrs g has been out canvassing in a middle class area and quite a few labour supporters say they are thinking of voting something else (liberal, green or plaid to choose from) for the reasons you might expect. A safe labour seat though, so a cheap protest vote I guess.

I would guess that the majority of serious mtbers have a hardtail. I have always kept a full susser and a long(er) travel hardtail, even when I also had a dh bike and a singlespeed.

Beginners are often frightened by the cost of mtbs, so starting with a decently specced do it all (mostly) hardtail makes some kind of sense. They will pretty soon decide they want a ful susser, but hopefully be able to keep the hardtail as well.

“Haven’t you seen the badges? Fabbrica Italiana Automobili di Torino.

Now let me sit on that SEAT over there.”

    Ha ha.

The motor company is now called Fiat Automobiles SpA. Along with other companies like BP and IBM it changed its corporate name to reflect the brand name. So Fiat on a car is now just a made up word which confusingly is the same as a real(ish) one. The DVD consortium has declared that the initials have no meaning, it is just a name.

I think this is the marketing/pr folk at work. When something is used as a brand name it loses any meaning it may have generally and simply represents the values of the brand. So the company is named after the brand it sells products under rather than the reverse (which is generally how things start off).

“The FIAT banking system literally magics more money out of thin air (by lending more than is received) every time a deposit in made into an account somewhere.”

I believe that MMT folks pooh pooh the status of bank lending according to the fractional reserve principle as not really being newly created money – only money created by the central bank is that.

But economists have several definitions of money depending on what they want to know about.

Why is fiat capitalised? It is not an acronym, it is a word. In Latin.

Fek me if you think Scottish politics is under reported at a UK level, try finding out about Wales. Actually the same probably goes for any region. Unless a total shitstorm is going on, it doesn’t get on the radar.

“Do we want a massively divided economy where enormous sums of money are hoarded by a small minority who don’t work and consume an awful lot”

I thought the issue is that, at the margin, they don’t consume as much (as a % of income) as poorer folk, they invest more. Which drives up asset prices. Also, poorer folk are more likely to spend any extra incomme locally. So consumption of goods and services will be more if the poor earn more and the rich less.

“I just read up on the plasterboard thing and it seems like 1 layer is good enough for a 2 story house, 2 layers is needed for >3 floors or flats”

We are only two stories, but we got 2 layers, and the builder used a consulting structural engineer* to specify the beams and what not, so I am assuming it was necessary. May be some other thing, or the rules changed.

    * we have 2 rsjs about 3.5m long which hold up a masonry internal wall and the top half of a chimney breast. Big bastards they are.

The beams in our kitchen needed two layers of plasterboard to cover them, related to fire safety (this was 1997). Possibly because it was a kitchen, but you should check the requirements for boxing the beam in.

Well it appears to be open for ipp, Zyou could tyr setting it up as an ipp printer via the cups web interface. But I have always found that stuff a bit miss and hit, but genarally a hit after a few misses.

    greyspoke

Hmmm. If you know the ip address, can you ping the printer?

and if you can, or indeed can’t

avahi-browse -at should list a load of devices that use dns/mdns including your printer. Or not.

    sudo systemctl stop firewalld

At a guess, the above might disable the firewall, and replacing start with stop (or rebooting) would enable it.

    ETA and

    systemctl

would list all running services, in which cups-browsed should show up, or if it is too long and confusint

    systemctl | grep cups

will weed the output to lines containing cups.

BTW I am not entirely sure cups-browsed is needed on the client, but I rather think it is.

ETA2 there is an element of guesswork on my part here as this is based on the systemd runtime control system that OpenSuse uses, whereas I use OpenRC.
