So I got offered full time instructing work at Mt Seymour over in Canada

Michael, Seymour is a cool little hill especially if you’re in to park. The ski school boss Johny (IIRC) is a super nice guy.

I work at Cypress and will be heading out at the end of November. If you want any advice on accommodation or transport etc. just give me a shout (email in profile is probably the fastest way to get in touch!).

    Good luck, Gregg

I want to go skiing this week, any suggestions for a cheap couple of days away?

Haven’t drunk for several years now. It’s amusing the way it really polarises opinions amongst other people. Most people I meet are way more concerned about it than I am! Feel way better for it and don’t miss it either.

About 3 years for me now, just don’t really feel like it. Funnily it winds my friends up too, some of them can’t understand how/why I don’t drink!

Went out on Friday night until 5am and had fun with friends and still don’t feel the need to be pissed. Being tired the next day is fine, being tired and feeling like the world is going to end, no thanks!

I use AVG Free on my MBP, not sure whether it’s needed or not but it’s free so why not!

I use the long ones and trainers for sailing instead of boots. Warmer and more comfortable moving around. Not used them cycling.

Damn forgot about bodies revealed, have to get down there before it moves on.

I need to do the same, I’m just home for a few weeks before heading off for the winter. Might try and go next week.

    It’s not just Liverpool, sadly….!

True, it just grates on me!! My mum always used to say if you’ve got nothing nice to say then don’t say anything, I guess the same should apply here!

It’s amuses me that whenever somebody asks questions about Liverpool you get the usual moronic replies from idiots that clearly have no idea what they are talking about.

Liverpool is a fantastic city, the doubters should get themselves up for a weekend and see for themselves.

At the moment there is a Bodies Revealed exhibition on in Liverpool One, I’ve not yet been but friends and family have and all gave positive reviews.

As mentioned above there is lots of beautiful architecture so remember to look up when you’re wandering around. If you get a nice day then a trip to the roof of the cathedral (Anglican, big sandstone one!)is worth a go, only costs a few quid. Then walk along Hope St to the other cathedral. Lots of restaurants along Hope St. The Quarter on Falkner st is one of my favourites for a chilled lunch, or the Side door is good too.

Albert Dock and the Tate are good for a wander and the new Liverpool Museum at the Pier Head although I can’t testify on that as I haven’t been yet.

If you want anymore specific advice just let me know.

Can you get BASI deal on Head skis? If so what about the Supershape Titan or Magnum?

You would have to use a full years visa even if you only went for a couple of months, the other option is sponsorship but I believe Whistler don’t do too much of that! As far as I’m aware you only get two chances to have a working holiday visa so probably better to save it if you plan on going for longer.

I would love to get into the interior a bit and do some of the hills there, I have a friend who works at Big White so might road trip to see him this year and do a few others while we’re at it.

You doing some interski this winter? I did a bit earlier this year in Courmayer and Pila, bit of fun.

You going back to Whistler? I’m at Cypress so down the road! Nice to live in the city and be in the mountains all in the same day! Will do as many trips to Whis as possible, need to get to Mt Baker too.

What do all you other ski instructors do during the summer? Just curious.

I work looking after race boats and sailing for a living. Another great lifestyle choice but thankfully pays a bit more than ski instructing!

I love it when people talk about the French instructors and how much they earn!! A very small percentile of instructors earn anywhere near that.

    Michael, where do you teach?

was trying to find some reduced smartwool or teko ones than arnt near £20

Icebreaker ones on sportpursuit at the moment, I think about £30 for three pairs, can’t remember exactly.

However I was talking to a ski patroller over in Canada and he was saying how we (ski instructors) start out on much higher pay than them!

In most resorts most of the patrollers start out by volunteering part-time, sometimes for a number of years, until a paid role becomes available.

My wife did hers through UKSA. She did a fast track course, with minimum hours. Her exam sounded much easier than mine. Mostly Solent based. In my book that cant really qualify as a yachmaster assessment.

    Have you told her that!!

How you find the Yachtmaster depends entirely on your background and experience. If you have sailed a lot on a variety of boats from dinghies to large yachts then as long as you’re comfortable with the nav then you’ll be fine.

If you’re coming in with minimum experience then it would probably be a lot tougher. That said when I did mine I was quite disappointed that some of the guys I was with passed when they clearly couldn’t sail all that well!

Michael, maybe give BASI a shout or ask the school where you’re doing the training for their input?

    greggparker9

    The green one is the magnum. If you are training for level 3 then you will have to be able to do all of the things listed;
    http://www.basi.org.uk/content/alpine-level-3-isia-technical-5-day-course.aspx

I think they expect all candidates to be on a piste ski, if you can do all the demos to the standard of your Line’s then fair play!

You’re right about them not being great in powder but at least you have your other skis for that. If you have the skills required for level 3 then it shouldn’t matter too much what skis you’re on. I had a friend who skied on Fischer FIS slalom skis all the time and he was still faster than me in the powder when I was on fatter skis!!

Right, does anyone know what skis are best suited for doing the BASI level 3? I’m gonna try and do some of the modules this winter.

At the moment the only skis I own are a pair of Line Prophets (98mm underfoot).

    Cheers.

You would probably be best on a piste ski, something like the Head Supershape Magnum or Titan. Both always get great reviews and lots of trainers/students skiing on them.

Or another ski I quite like the look of is the Rossignol 9GS, detuned GS ski, slightly fatter than FIS regs and looks a lot of fun.

I can’t comment on the riding but spent a week there on a boat last year and it was fantastic. I too was expecting the grotty side and was very pleasantly surprised. Had a friend working at Club La Santa as a dive instructor so got to check that out and their facilities are amazing. Good place to stay in my opinion.
