Patient: “Doctor, i’ve got a cricket ball stuck up my arse”.

    Doctor: “How’s that?”

    Patient: “Don’t you start!”

Sounds like there’s nowt wrong with you mate!

Commuet 14 miles per day – am assuming you are cycling.

A twenty minute nap on the couch is nothing.

If you are getting 8 or 9 hours a night that is nowt to worry about?

I can kip on the couch for 2 hours in the middle of the day at weekends (if the family allows me 😉 )

Sleep is great! I loves it!

I asked my Daughter how she knew God was a man, not a woman.

She said, “D’uh! if it was a woman then it’d be Godess, not God”

Seems fair to me – and about as valid as anyone else’s theory 😉

I have been overtaken going uphill by two joggers.

I was on a roadbike, square pedalling 39*25, 1 in 10 gradient, 1/3rd of a mile long, had a 100 yard start and they caught me before the top 🙁

    Nightmare.

    Some nice looking bikes there.

14t – not too sure about that!

I’m running 32×16 on a GT Zaskar with a cheap-as-chips steel fork and Avid V brakes.

Think a nice rigid Carbon Fork would make a nice upgrade, as would disks. Don’t know if the suspension up front would make too much of a difference to me now i’m used to riding rigid.

Think 32*18 is the way to go for me personally for anything over 2-3 hours.

    Like the silver on one.

    Nice one.

I was thinking about it for a singlecross – having the current flip flop wheel for double fixed and a separate wheel for a 3 or 5 speed freewheel.

Reckon it could be a relatively cheap way of having the one bike do fixed for road and hub geared for longer distance hill road rides and also mild offroad and cross riding

Any chance of a pic of your bike mate?

Not sure if i’d stick it on the hardtail as some riding can lead to hub deep bog trotting although I still run V brakes so no disc option wouldn’t be a problem for me.

    Thanks

Laggan Black route for me. Done it twice and I think cleaned 40-50% at most (and that may be a generous estimate). Compared with the likes of Innerleithen and GT black which I can ride 99% of no problem it was an eye opener.

For physical toughness the climb up Glen Finglas clockwise had me beat once you see the trail zig-zagging away in front of you

Would like to try Laggan again now i’m fitter

Kinda pointless, other than for your own interest. Maybe the reason a mag doesn’t publish data like this as it can never be compared accurately.

What if someone puts their bike away after a wet Thursday ride and doesn’t lube the chain for a week? Will that affect life when compared to someone who lubes after every ride?

How much lube constitutes an adequate amount? (!)

Like I say, interesting from your own point of view but pretty pointless to anyone else – too many variables.

However I agree completely about magazines – bought MBR last week for the first time in years – 120 pages – 48 adverts + 3 more pages of ads advertising subscriptions to the mag. Other articles – are £2k 120mm full sussers better value than £2.5k 140mm full sussers? erm, duh?

The only interesting article was the Killer Loop with the Hope guys and they summed up my feelings exactly – the bike industry is taking the piss out of consumers.

It could be argued that the foreign riding article was ok if you are into going abroad but even then, despite running to 3 or 4 pages, there was actually very little substance at all in it – just padded out with phots and a paragraph on each destination/event. Not worth a f*ck – same with the ride pullouts. Two or three paragraphs on each ride (ok, the killer loop got a full description in the Hope article) but the 21 mile Loch Laggan circular basically consisted of “head out along the side of the Loch, come back again on the other side. Maybe go to Wolftrax, they are nearby and quite good.”

I paid £4.25 for this pish.

The last time I got this mag the route pullout section used to devote around a page to each route and more to the killer loop. This is total shyte.

Sorry for thread hi-jack, as you were!

For the price of two of these crap mags I could get a £7 chain which at least would be useful for a month or two and have enough money left over for a can of beer to drink while i’m installing the chain.

    P.S. entertaining thread 🙂

    cheers guys.

Pistola, pics would be good mate. Also like the sound of the route through to fintry – potential for a huge day there if you link up with a bit of road to the head of the Carron Valley reservoir to go up Meikle Bin and drop down to Clachan of Campsie – road back to Strathblane

    Cheers,
    Grant

P.S. if I were upgrading my model Bs i’d go for the Shimano RS80 carbon laminates but the cheapest you’d get them is 320 new – don’t often see them come up second hand

PX Model B – 125 quid 1.7kg (look suspiciously like Reynolds Solitudes )
    Aksium – 100 quid (Planet X website) 1.75kg

Doubt you’d get better even if you paid 200 second hand

I’m kind of depressed by how much bitterness seems to have been directed towards the current cafe operators on this thread.

It is generally acknowledged that the current folks have built a local business and have contributed much of their own toil towards improving the venue and with the kids club, etc.

Ok, so you may not like the cafe but I can’t believe how little sympathy they are getting from people on here????

Some of the biggest criticisms seem to be about sitting on dirty chairs? To me that was all part of the charm. It’s not as though folks were wearing their Sunday best! Why does everything need to be sanitised?

Bigger ain’t always better and i’m not sure I like the fact that cycling is the new golf 🙁

Like it or loath it – the hub cafe and shop have been integral to the success of GT as they offer something not available at the other stanes, except Mabie perhaps on a lesser scale.

Of course, there are two sides to every story, but it’s just my opinion – having seen evidence how persons in the employ of FCS behaved in their dealings with CVDG (and hearing about the potential financial restrictions that are going to be placed on event organisers in future) – bottom line seems all about the dough.

    1. All well and good, tootall, but when you introduce subjective analysis as well as pure and simple price, that is how you ‘manouvre’ the procurement process in your desired direction.

    2. As for giving other areas the benefit of investment and trails – google CVDG – various local authorities in the central region were very keen to throw money at expansion of Carron Valley and FC scuppered it. FCS’ behaviour in this instance was a disgrace.

P.S. I rarely go to GT and felt that in the last few years prices in the cafe went up and portions went down! But that’s just my opinion.

Regardless of who should run the cafe – this smacks of what FCS did to CVDG – clash of personalities and a bit of ‘we’ll show you who’ boss’ mentality.

Saw someone mention Dales – I use them as my lbs for bits and pieces and when I had a warranty issue on a fork they were very good – I was half expecting them to be disinterested but they were great, despite the bike it came from being the only big purchase i’d ever made from them (and two years prior at that). I use them now for my consumables such as cables, pads, etc. I find their prices are not much dearer than the best online for these things – spesh branded tubes for 2.99 for example. Tesco charge a fiver for a generic non-branded presta tube.

The guys in the shop are also very helpful and most of them seem to have been there for quite a while.

Before this turns into an advert for Dales (!!) I would say it horses for courses – would never buy a rrp bike but that isn’t necessarily the lbs’ fault – it’s not them that set rrps. I think the price of new bikes is shocking so would wait for a sale if I was going to buy one.

I’ve also bought a few bits from Planet X who feel like an LBS somehow, even though they are an online retailer.

On the flipside – I can see how retailers get frustrated with punters. Guys who have 3 or 4 grand bikes and who quibble over the price of a tube – get a grip!
