You should be fine. If you were swapping out the whole mobo + CPU to current flavours (say going from P4 to i7) & you’re on an older kernel i’d suggest upgrade. A P4 era kernel won’t have full support for the i7 CPU & mobo features. But if i read you right & you’re just upgrading the CPU you should be ok.

As bazzer said, if you’re not installing more than 4G memory you’ll be ok from the memory side.

It’s been an unusually quiet winter. The first for quite a few years without any visiting Blackcaps. Normally i have 3 or 4 here from the first easterly winds in November through to March. I’ve still got the usual assortment of wren, dunnock, tits, blackbirds. Always have plenty of finches. There’s about 20 assorted green/gold/chaff sat on the feeders right now.

The Sparrowhawk took what i think might have been the first redwing of the winter this morning :(

The redwings & fieldfare only usually show up in harsh winters when all the food has disappeared from up on the Downs.

As suggested, try the espresso starter pack from Hasbean.

Get an Aeropress for when you’re feeling lazy. Aeropress + decent beans will make better coffee than anything you’ll get from a pod.

HP have been running variants of this MicroServer offer for a year or so now.

Yup, but last I checked (which was a while ago, admittedly) the offer wasn’t around, which is why I posted it.

Sorry Cougar, I didn’t word that very well. I was agreeing with you ;)

Same here. the last time i checked it wasn’t available. I suspect they dropped it temporarily to refresh the hardware specs – this one has a slower/newer CPU but twice the amount of RAM from last years model.

I wonder if they’ll keep extending this offer like they did throughout last year.

HP have been running variants of this MicroServer offer for a year or so now. They’re really really good value. The CPU is virtualisation capable. They’re RHEL certified. Besides the 4 drive slots, the motherboard has a USB socket on it so you can run the host O/S on that & have the 4 drives in full 3+1 RAID5.

Most of my work colleagues have at least one. I’d say a majority have more than one :)

I use mine as a backup for my main server, with 4 x 1.5TB drives in RAID5. It’ll run backups of all my VM’s, including my VM that runs my NFS shares for music & video. The only other thing i needed to add was a second NIC.

These would make an ideal NAS. They’re whisper quiet. The build quality is excellent. The fan draws air directly over the drives so they’re unlikely to overheat.

One note of caution that a friend got bitten by. HP dealers are excluded from this offer. Buy from somewhere like EBuyer that’s actually advertising the cashback offer.

+1 to what Cougar & others have said about RAID not being a backup. The other thing i’ll add is whatever backup strategy you chose, regularly test that you can recover from it.

Also got a bottle of Eldridge Pope – Thomas Hardys Ale (11%) from 1995 which I cant bring myself to drink. Mainly because the brewery doesnt exist anymore and once its gone thats it.

By far the best beer i’ve drunk was a bottle of Thomas Hardy i bought in the early 80’s that somehow i’d managed to keep for about 18 years. I’ve drunk un-aged Hardy & it was nothing like that. It lost all the “barley wineyness”. Absolutely lovely.

I regret not keeping a case of the proper Gales Prize Old Ale in corker bottles back for ageing. That would be stunning.

peterfile has it right. For me it’d have to be the Rochefort Tripple.

If the recipe calls for fresh leaves, re-hydrated dried Methi doesn’t work too well IME. If you’re wanting to make something like Methi-Paneer or Methi-Aloo you really need fresh leaves.
Methi leaves wilt down much like spinach. If i was looking for a handful of fresh leaves, i’d probably use a teaspoon of dried. But that’s going to be a quite intense taste. Fresh leaves are a lot less intense.

I was only going to post up the Sascha Rydell track, but i found this compilation of the EP. This video is great. INERTIA #4 // Skudge / Conforce / Cosmin TRG / Sascha Rydell

Good to hear Ultramarine doing music again. One of my favourite bands from the 90’s

Hey, grahamb – does Rockbox let it go louder?

Yes it does. It also doesn’t have the region specific volume limit that the original has. Rockbox has a load of features that are way above what the original O/S provides. The manual is here if you want to check out what it’ll do.

in-ear headphones are a must as it isn’t very loud

The sound level is perfectly acceptable with my Audio Technica M50’s & Rockbox.

I also have an old iRiver H340 that now has a 120G drive & 24 hour battery. The sound quality with that is leagues better than any of the small Clip/Nano sized players, but it’s a brick & really not portable.

I’m very impressed with my Sansa Clip+ with rockbox, 8G internal & 16G SD card. I’m using almost exclusively flac encoded files. Headphones are either Shure se420’s or some decent Audio Technica cans.

Rockbox gives a noticeable improvement in sound output over the stock Sansa O/S. It’s 100% stable. I’ve been using it for the last 18 months or so.

No iTunes compatibility AFAIK – i don’t use it. It’s USB storage compliant so appears as a couple of drives.

Another +1 for both Hasbean and the Aeropress.

I’m liking the Ethiopian Peaberry in the Hasbean subscription pack this week. Tiny tiny beans. Great coffee.

Do you see anything in the boot logfile ?. I’m not sure what it is on SuSE. On RHEL/Fedora it’s /var/log/boot.log.

If you run “init 4” then “init 5” i’d expect you to see some messages about stopping & starting your nameserv service (or at least attempting to start).

    grahamb
    Free Member

What runlevel is the server running at ?. If it’s at 2 or 4 then the service won’t get started. “chkconfig –level 2345 nameserv on” will enable it for 2-5.

Edit: using “chkconfig nameserv on” will just enable it for whatever the default levels are defined in the init script.

The only weakness is the bike mount

+1. My 20 fell out of it’s mount a couple of times, so i took to using a lanyard of bright yellow Dyneema looped round the stem to stop it falling too far. (Bright yellow Dyneema, as one time when it fell off it took me about 5 mins rummaging around in the undergrowth to find it).

The only other annoyance is the constant bleeping when it’s sat in a pocket/pack with the screen locked & something touches the screen. It’d be nice to disable the sound alert just for that, as having the low battery warning bleep is good.

+1 to what Dan says if it’s eVent or similar.

See the reply from Julie from Montane at the bottom of the first page in this outdoormagic thread. Since i’ve followed this advice i’ve had no problems rejuvenating my waterproofs.

There was another thread i read on there about warm iron vs tumble dry for restoring the DWR. Iron is supposedly better as the tumble bit of tumble drying isn’t as good for the garment.

I played Tuba & E? bass at school, the latter in a youth brass band. I hated it. The only good thing i could say was it taught me basic understanding of music notation.

I was always an electronic music fan & worked with electronics so ended up building & buying quite a roomful of synths, drum machines, effects, & a portastudio from 1980 onwards. I never really learned to play the keyboard as such, but could program drum machines & sequencers live, work a multi-track tape etc. Dropped it in the early 90’s due to complaints from my partner at the time, just as the electronic music scene really kicked off, & sold off all my gear, something i’ve really regretted ever since :(

Picked it back up a couple of years ago, but now do everything on the PC in Ableton. Loving it.

Another Hasbean customer here. I’m currently using their subscription service, which is a great way to try different varieties i’d not buy otherwise. I’m loving the Machacamarcha they shipped a couple of weeks ago.

I’ll also buy Monmouth beans if i’m passing one of their shops.

I’m using an old Dualit grinder for my Aeropress & i’ve got it on about halfway setting. Similar to what i’d use for a filter, finer than for a stovetop. I tried using an espresso grind & couldn’t push the water through.

    Use some decent coffee.

Hasbean have a video & pdf on how to use the Aeropress.

While you’re at Hasbean, order some coffee. The Machacamarca is stunning.

have no trouble with my AMG/Litespeed Merlin

Nor here until April this year where (on it’s 10K mile celebratory ride) i noticed a crack from the top tube through the seat tube to the chain stay, directly below the sleeve in the seat tube. ABG/Merlin considered it to be caused by wear & tear & not warranty. I didn’t take up the offer of a slightly below list Litespeed replacement. (I went to Indy Fab for the replacement).

Shame. I loved riding that bike.

Try seam grip. It’s worked for me with tears on pertex & eVent. Most outdoor shops seem to sell it.

That Photek track is certainly written by Photek on the album Form & Function, which also contains the remix up there. Not sure who decided it had anything to do with Orbital. Nothing to do with me. (That’ll teach me to post something & go back to doing some work :)

    Edit: damn

I’m 6’2″ or so, slim build, longish arms. I’ve a couple of their event jackets, a cheaper waterproof, a couple of their pertex tops & an (older) softshell. They’re all medium & i’d say they’re a perfect fit.
