With regard to C++, its horses for courses. Which is the right language depends on what you want to do with it. Java is everywhere including Android. C# is good for windows, ObjectiveC and swift for Apple.

JavaScrip, Python and Lua have a role as does Pl/SQL and Transact SQL.

You can even make a living using “old” languages like Cobol and Delphi.

Not a Chrome book user (so I really qualified to comment)

It is proving difficult to save work to memory sticks (for pupils to use their work elsewhere)

Can you get your students to create their own Goolge accounts and then save the work to their own Google Drive. This avoids the need to use a memory stick, lets the autosave work and they can log into their account from home and continue to work on the document in a browser.

Don’t try to use it as a laptop (save to a memory stick)

Compatibility should not be an issue as you can edit online or download it a wide range of formats using “File > Download As”

I’ve not used Access to build a DB for a long time but check how the version you are using works with multiple users, in the past Access has struggled with reads blocking writes and overwriting data with older versions.

Typically this happens when user A is viewing a record and B edits the same record. What happens when A then edits the record or simply navigates away is critical to multiple user systems.

If it was me I’d consider using a hosted platform mogrim suggested bugzilla, I’m more familiar with Jira both of which can be hosted. The hosting company holds the database and manages backup while you access the application via a browser.

Jira is < £10 month

That doesn’t help if you are looking for a practice project or a CV builder but setting up a workflow/experience of JIRA is always useful.

@flanagaj I define the greatest code as the one who writes the least code.

BTW does you FizzBuzz go from 0-99 or 1-100? One of the things it tests for is picking up out by one errors as it makes a good talking point

Good luck finding a job its a shame I’m no longer in position to hire people or I’d ask for a CV.

@flanagaj I’ve never tried a “closed book” test I’ve only asked people not the google the question.

I tended to worry more about people who tried to wade in write new code without looking for an existing library/solution

I’ve run interviews using coding tests and I’m much more interested in how the candidate attacks the problem than the solution – if you haven’t already heard back I’d not give up hope.

You can always practice to brush up your skills; something like DailyProgrammer or Kata may help if you submit to DailyProgrammer you can get feedback on your code.

I’ve used FizzBuzz, String reversing and computing pi.

The only time I worried was when someone claiming Java experience could not implement FizzBuzz

Edit after I read Rachel’s post: This was for new graduates not experienced programmers

Thank you all very much for your help.

@GrahamS thanks, I’ve allready defences Jeff and Joel. Its funny there are a few papers on productivity and multiple monitors but not many that specifically looked at software.

@gwaelod I think that most of the marks are for the statistical analysis of the data – I have to count monitors and say what percentage of people are using multiple monitors

@dragon thanks – useful background I did consider doing a wider survey of habitual computer uses.

I can’t give you advice on how to invest but be careful of putting it all in one account as you are only protected by FSCS up to 85k.

@GrahamS thanks for the feedback – I expected most people to have one or two monitors but I should have allowed for right/left/center

@GrahamS – I agree, unless you are using one very large screen. I prefer a laptop keyboard as it very thin but I’ve been able to use a touchpad – much prefer a mouse.

No mudguard or rack mounts on the RT58 they are included with the London Road – depends on how often you are riding to work.

@whatnobeer – Exactly right – total number of screens

@TheBrick
– thanks for the insight – I hadn’t really considered people using an array of computers do you use completely separate machines, remote desktop or a KVM switch to control them?

@dudeofdoom – Thats really useful I was hoping that there where some large single monitor users out there.

@Klunk -Thanks – I’m starting to worry that I’m not going to find any single monitor users!

These ones? not done but check what qualification you get and then search

I have a Myson kickstart (don’t know the model but it has a fan with two speeds) really pleased with it. heats up a medium sized kitchen to the point where I’ve not used the underflow heating this winter.

I’d recommend it over a radiator

I’ve never used wordpress but have built a website using Conrete5.

I was very simple, more typing than coding and wordpress is largely the same.

Start by finding a template that is a close to the style of site that you want to make and then do the minimal amount of customisation – tweaking the colours.

If you are doing a major renovation wire every room for cat6 and/or RS485 (if you really want to get into home automation).

It’s not an area I know much about but I put in 4 ethernet ports in the drawing room and its been really useful. It may sound a lot but a smart TV and PVR will use two and one of the others is being used by the hi-fi.

Wired connections are faster*, more secure and easier to configure.

You could also look at power over ethernet

You don’t have to make all the connections live but I think that having enough ethernet ports us going to be like having enough power sockets in a few years time.

* Its only going to be faster for streaming from local storage

All good advice regarding hardware changes and running a malware. Where did you get the laptop from and what brand is it?

If its somewhere like PC World or John Lewis its probably illegitimate if it was from a small build to order place or Ebay the risk is higher.

You could use as VLookup and filters but it might be better to use Excel’s database functions they are a bit harder to use but very useful when you know your way around them.

Who’ll be the last to be replaced?

What’s harder – to replicate the knowledge of a doctor or the physical skill of a plumber?

Both are replaceable; we will see medical diagnosis delegated to computers and/or outsourced the lowest bidder. The same applies to the plumber things like Bathroom Pods will replace on site construction in new builds. More complicated equipment (boilers and washing machines) will have diagnostics added and be connected to the internet.

You will also start to see the appearance of wearable health monitoring devices replacing regular trips to the doctors for chronic conditions.
In both cases you will need someone to do the fitting/surgery and there will still be a need for both the emergency plumber and clinician. Neither job will disappear but they will change the risk is that they become deskilled

I went on one of their Lake District skills weekends back in 2006 so things could have changes and I don’t have any direct experience of their overseas events. That being said the instructors I met had worked oversees. I was very happy with the course and I went on and recommend the. Two of the instructors I meet anecdotally described their trips abroad and it sounded well organized and enjoyable (for the guests, I think the instructors work very hard).

Also found via Google Takeout

Assign all the emails from OTA a label and then export the label.

Get quote from someone to parse email and retrieve the data. This is really basic programming

Start here: freelancer and ask the same question.

The answer will depend on whether the data is still in the emails or if you can export them. From a programming point of view it quite easy, more so from a set if files than using Google’s API unless you are already familiar with it. he answer will depeand on wheter the data is still in the emails or if you can export them.

Find your local second hand tool shop and get a Record vice as well. I think I have a number 23

Really good code should be really basic and simple, because you’ve designed it well in the first place

I’d call that exceptional coding
