Phil’s videos are brilliant. I got loads of little tips and time-savers from them.

You can spend a fortune on Pasche, devilbis and other exotic airbrushes and compressors, but frankly, you don’t need to.

True, to a certain extent. My first dual action was a PremiAir G35, which is about £35 – £45. It worked, but was a pain in the arse to clean, and clogged easily with certain acrylics, but I got along with it.

After trying a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution at a show I was so impressed I spent £120 I didn’t have on the spot. It was like the difference between night and day. Cleans easily and sprays everything beautifully and predictably (except frikking Xtracrylix…..horrible stuff.)

I have the cheapest compressor (with reservoir tank) I could find, leave it on full pressure and control the air at the brush with an inline ‘regulator’.

Thanks, glad you like it (and don’t take the piss like my workmates.)

It was about 6 weeks Ian, but I’m a slow builder.

It was the first model I did a Work In Progress thread, so if anyone would like to see the process click here.

EDIT: just seen the other replies. Top work fu_manchu, love the Frogfoot.

I have to say I never thought I’d see this thread on STW! 😆

My question for the STW massive is: just how nerdy am I?

The short answer is “not as nerdy as me”.

The long answer goes like this: I got back in to it after a 20 year break about 2 years ago. I didn’t want to inflict the smells and fumes on my wife, so set up in the cellar, which was not a great place. So I converted our little shed at the bottom of the garden. It now has power, a PC with web access, carpet, and shelves of kits and materials (including one dedicated to whisky 😉 )

I’m absolutely loving it, and it’s seen off the last vestiges of some very uncharacteristic anxiety attacks I was suffering from for about four years. I entered my first competition last weekend, and won my class, much to my amazement.

So yes, not as nerdy as me!

WTF > I got wind of Stewart Lee’s ‘If You Prefer A Milder Comedian…’ from a previous thread on Top Gear. The finest piece of stand up I have ever seen.

I have had claims with Petplan that are the polar opposite of bigbloke’s experience.

They’ve insured both our dogs. When we’ve been to the vets we drop in a partially completed claim form for the surgery to complete and post. We pay the bill, and leave. We have had the insured part back as a cheque within 5 days every time. They’ve never quibbled.

When Ted ruined a stopper pad and was in for many repeat treatments we had the cheque from Petplan before the vet even invoiced us.

Nice to see another person going down the rescue route. It’s not always easy (50 / 50 rate here, based on an unrepresentative sample of two dogs!) bu tvery rewarding.

Google LurcherLink or GreyhoundGap. Lurchers and Longdogs are great, as you can have almost any breed you want.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the info. From the links I’d say it was pretty much definitely a satellite flare, that coincided with the only visible star at the time. Armed with the info on the linked site I’ll try and purposefully observe another to make sure, but Occam’s Razor tells me this was more likely than observing a star go super-nova with the naked eye!

Typhoon wasn’t designed to be taken by the wheels and chucked at the sky.

Or dragged to a halt by a massive cable whilst developing full power. Or suitably corrosion resistant. The undercarriage won’t be anywhere beefy enough for carrier life either, as will other elements of the airframe. Probably has undesirable approach characteristics too, with not being designed for carrier operations from the outset.

    Rafale is though..

This basic list of modifications to the Rafale C (chasse) to produce an M (marine) illustrate why you can’t just fly any aircraft on to and off a carrier.
Strengthened to withstand the rigors of carrier-based aviation
    Stronger landing gear
Longer nose gear leg to provide a more nose-up attitude for catapult launches
Deleted front centre pylon (to give space for the longer gear)
    Arresting tailhook between the engines
    Built-in power operated boarding ladder
    Carrier microwave landing system
“Telemir” inertial reference platform that can receive updates from the carrier systems.

I imagine that is not exhaustive!

    Spud looks cool!

I have to laugh at the ‘dogs must be under perfect control or on a lead’ comments. Can we apply the same to mountain bikers, they must be on legal trails or not at all. Then I won’t have to worry about idiots getting shirty when Ted chases them whilst we are walking in fields protected on all entries by kissing gates and with not one bridleway on them.

I am fully aware the dog would need a lot of contact time before being felt for a full day.

    Sorry, but *snigger*

You could always look at a retired greyhound. They are VERY happy to lie around indoors all day.

“It’s the specs of dust / paint doing 200km/hr”

I would have thought that would be relatively easy, it’s the particles at 10 – 40Km/s that tax the engineers.

We’ve had Petplan for both the hounds we’ve owned so far. They’ve been excellent, especially covering Ted the longdog and his ‘leap before you look’ approach to life.

That’s wrong! :O) A sonic boom is trailed continuously behind the supersonic object.

    From Wiki:

Since the boom is being generated continually as long as the aircraft is supersonic, it fills out a narrow path on the ground following the aircraft’s flight path….

Geocaching is great. We’ve been guided to some great locations we’d never have visited otherwise, and been greatly entertained.

will the thing work with a wireless printer

Depends. I have an HP wireless printer. They produce an app (I hate that term!) to print direct from (and scan to) the iPad.

I’m also no great Apple fan but this is the first piece of their kit that I could really go for. Pricey but seems to just work in an intuitive, no faff sort of way

I’ve never owned an Apple product before. I was intrigued by the iPad as a replacement for my 5 year old laptop. I spent a while thinking about what I intended my laptop to be used for when I bought it, and what it actually gets used for. Could I achieve that on a reasonably priced iPad? (£500 for 32Gb WiFi version)

It turns out I thought I could, so took a deep breath and tried something different, and the iPad is one of the best computing purchases I have ever made. Superb.

Smooth coated or crossed? Our Ted is saluki / deerhound / greyhound, and I see many of the traits below.

Salukis can be aloof and loners. When bred originally they were intended for much longer chases than your average sighthound. The best ones were those that singlemindedly stuck to the chase, despite all distractions. They were then selected for further breeding. Have this in mind when training recall!

A bit slow on the uptake, but not necessarily dim, they can be complete clowns.

It was a bit tough when my wife was a junior, especially A&E rotation and MRCP exams. But she made consultant by 31 (12 months ago) and now pretty much works 9 – 5 five days a week.
